First Great Western - A First Great Western Train at Bristol Temple Meads Station

    First Great Western

First Great Western trains run throughout the West of England to primarily London. Historically,…read moreFirst Great Western hasn't been very good on the customer satisfaction list, but in the recent years they have dramatically improved their services to near perfection. In my experience, they have never been late or cancelled and have almost always arrived a few minutes ahead of schedule (which is always handy so you can grab an unexpected cup of coffee!). The trains themselves are of a very high standard. Each seat is full length (unlike First Capital Connect) and the floor has carpet on it which is a pleasant luxury. There is no chewing gum stuck to the seats, or graffiti etched onto the tables. Everything is almost spotlessly clean. In fact sometimes I wonder if I am in First Class, it is that nice! There is quite a large buffet on most of the trains (most definitely the ones headed to London Paddington) which although isn't cheap, certainly is no more expensive than the stands at the train stations. Most, if not all of the staff are friendly and very helpful. One down side I would say is that I find it hard to open the doors as you have to reach outside the window and open them from the exterior of the train which (if you are on the short side like me) is pretty difficult. There is also a large gap from the train to most platforms which again is difficult especially if you have a lot of luggage. However, I have found on many occasions that the train staff rush to help you if you are struggling which I think is great. There are toilets on board and are almost always clean, however no toilet on a train is perfect really! On board travel magazines are provided free of charge and also an emergency exit information booklet is on every seat (it almost feels like an aeroplane!). A word of warning though - if your ticket is booked in advance you MUST get on that exact train which is stated on your ticket. If you miss it, or hop on an earlier train you are fined a lot of money. Also, I have heard that if you sit in a seat already reserved then a £20 fine is given to you. Price wise, First Great Western trains are very reasonable if booked in advance online through their website. A single from Bristol Temple Meads to Gatwick Airport off peak with a Young Persons Railcard is £7.60 which is very cheap for the distance travelled. In conclusion, I would definitely recommend First Great Western, primarily for the fast, cheap and reliable service.

It is one of the few services that you can guarantee will be fast and professional every time you take it. That does not mean to say that i like the trains in this country in general, just that i think relatively First Great Western is one of the best!

    City Car Club

    City Car Club

So..hi..I'm Richard, I've been a member of the club for over a year and i've found it fantastic for short to medium hires. Calling it a 'club' is a winning tactic it makes you feel like you're a member of some secret society. Anyway, I digress, i've used city cars for everything from the odd trip to IKEA, or to the supermarket to get a 24 pack of beers home, to hiring the vans to move house. I've also booked cars for 24 hours on a couple of occasions for a wedding and a day trip. I won't go into costs as they're likely to change, so you can do that yourself by looking at their website. But for anything longer than 24 hours using normal car hire tends to work out cheaper. I pay an extra £5 a month to bring the insurance excess down to £100. Which means that if I were to damage a car (which so far I haven't) then I won't be forking out hundreds. For me it takes some of the worry out of negotiating Bristol's congested streets. Now if you're anything like me (a bit of a car fan) then you'll like the fact that you've got the opportunity to 'test drive' a whole bunch of different cars. You're not going to find an Alfa Romeo 8c on the list, but i've had fun whizzing around in the brand new fiestas and experiencing the strange silent gliding sensation of a Hybrid Prius as it accelerates. I have no hesitation in giving city car club the thumbs up. Friendly customer services too. Had to call late at night once 'cause I couldn't get the key to turn in the ignition; steering lock was on..duh!

With locations throughout the city, I was able to try out the car situated on Chessel Street with my firends who live just minutes around the corner. This business idea is great. All you have to do is register line and they send you a card. This card then unlocks any of their cars and lets you in where you wil fin the keys and you can drive off, anywhere you want for £5 an hour - including insuarance. You have to pay extra per mile, but if you need it for a little run about to the shops and back and can't afford all the exspense of having your own car then this really is the next best thing!! Its brill!
