Rebuilt a couple a years ago to replace the wee-smelling, wouldn't-go-there-after-dark hell hole that once was there. The new bus station, by contrast, is shiny and clean and not really that scary at all. There are loads of seats, regularly cleaned toilets and a coffee bar selling snacks and vaguely caffeine-tinged beverages for about half the price of Starbucks. I have to say - buses and coaches (to all over the UK from here) do seem to keep good time on the whole, and there are hundreds of different services all well co-ordinated, signposted and timetabled for your travel comfort

And here is what a Bristol bus looks like, in case you don't actually see on your visit... Taken from their website

Bristol Bus Station, not the most inspiring of words. There's a facebook group 'Bristol bus is whack like crack' and I often think they're not far wrong. Bristol buses are slow, overpriced things that never ever seem to come when I want them. The bus station, has been recently done up, and you're guaranteed to find a bus here, at least. The best thing I can say about this place is that they've got buses going to London really frequently, at least every hour during office hours on week days. There isn't that sense of chaos you get at some bus stations - things happen too slowly here to be disorganised. The new building is refreshing too, they've managed to get a bit more light into the place and everything's a bit cleaner. So apart from the bus local bus services you can get from it Bristol Bus Station is pretty good.

When I had to go to the Bristol Bus Station I really wasn't looking forward to it. I had images of bracing the elements waiting like a lemon, homeless camp-outs, and endless flurries of hurried people all cooped up in a derelict building. Apprantly this was what the bus station used to be like. It is all new and modern now. Enclosed seating area and everything! There was ample seating and I didn't have to wait long. All bus routes were on time and well co-ordinated. Everything was so calm as well- no stamping on feet, elbowing passers by or scrambling onto a full bus.

Sustrans is all about finding SUStainable TRANSport, and focus not only on the environmental affects but also our own personal health choices. Now, Bristol is meant to be Britain's first cycling city, with all the bliming hills I'm not sure who thought that was a good idea but Sustrans, and organisations like them, are trying to make it work. If your already a fan of the bike then the can offer lots of usual tips and have an online shop with reasonably priced accessories.

Bristol is not a particularly cyclist friendly city. Sustrans, a charity focused on promoting…read morecycling based in the city, have done some great things to help out cyclists, but a few major problems remain. Firstly, it's ridiculously hilly. Cycling to somewhere like Lawrance Weston from the Cotham (I pick the route as it's one I've had to do for the last couple of weeks) is a thirty minute endurance test involving not one but two uber steep hills. There isn't too much Sustrans can do about this though. The second major problem is that whilst there are some excellent cycle lanes in the city, there are all too many that seem to have been designed with minimal thought put into it. My particular favourite is the lane running along Cumberland Basin, with car lanes either side, that just peters out unexpectedly. Glourious! I've always wanted to be marooned in the middle of a dual carriage! Sustrans seeks to solve problems like this, building attractive, safe routes to make cycling a viable option for more people. With the health, cost, and environmental benefits of cycling (I can see you all going cross-eyed as I creep into cyclist evangelist mode) they're clearly a worth cause.

For this reason, I only ever took it once and never again for a few years. However I had to get to London a week ago for an impromptu trip, and trains were just mighty expensive, so I decided to pay £7.50 for a megabus ride. Not looking forward to it at all, I went to the bus stop and waited.. and was pleasantly surprised that the bus was actually 10 minutes early! Also surprising was the chirpy, friendly driver and the bus itself, which seemed much cleaner than what I had remembered. Prices are usually cheaper than the £7.50 I paid if you book earlier than I did. If you do it at the right time, you can get them for a pound, which you won't get anywhere else! The ride to London was 2.5 hours, an hour more than the train. Another surprise, was that we got there on time! My bus trip was either a fluke, or Megabus has really upped their game and are providing a more reliable service these days. Pretty good value, if you ask me!

I know this is a bit of a standing joke, but if you tell your inner snob to shut up for a moment,…read moreit can't be denied that the Megabus is an absolute bargain. Now that the Megatrain is sadly no longer with us, from Bristol this just services south Wales (which I haven't tried) and London. I'm not sure if the bargain prices are still as easy obtain as they once were, but if you book early enough this is a great way to get to the capital (my wife and I once got there for a total price of £4.50 - £1 single each way plus a 50p booking charge!). I've used it about twice and both times it was on time both ways and in fact turned up well within the three hour it claims it will take (it actually takes around 2hrs 20 which isn't far off the train time). The buses go from outside the Colston Hall, though I'm sure I heard recently that they no longer pick up in Easton so you may need to check this. One other thing, National Express have started doing 'fun fares' in response, which can be just as cheap, so be sure to double-check their prices too before you book.

The driver did not know the pick up address or the drop off address. After a very difficult to communicate phone call to actually get him to the address, which was finally resolved with lots of arm waving after having to walk round the corner and half way down the hill to find him, it became apparent that he only really knew two words of English 'POST' and 'CODE'. After inputting the answer into his Sat Nav, which I saw gave him a very straightforward route to the destination - he got lost. My 9 year had to resort to giving him directions. The return journey was exactly the same, only with my 70 year mum returning looking like a drowned sewer rat as the pick up driver got lost on the way to pick them up AGAIN. WITH A SAT NAV! They were stood out in the rain waiting for 30 minutes and had to direct him back home AGAIN. Avoid at all costs.
