Unfortunately it's not 24-hour, but they go from around 6am to around 10pm (you may wish to check that!) every 20 minutes or so, ferrying passengers on a loop from Clifton via the coach station and Temple Meads, then up through Bedminster to the airport. A taxi will costs you around £22 (so £44 for a return journey) to Temple Meads, while a return on here is just £9 (singles are £6). They're also almost as quick (20 min journey or so), due to the fact that the traffic is so dense for the majority of the journey that a taxi's extra speed is negated (I was running late for a flight once and shelled out for a taxi, only for the bus I'd spurned to pull up behind us as we arrived!). If you're on the route and travelling at a reasonable time, the Flyer beats a taxi hands down for price.

Highbridge and Burnham station serves the adjacent towns of Highbridge and Burnham-on-Sea in…read moreSomerset, on the line between Bristol and Taunton. Today, it's an unstaffed halt with a small shelter on the Taunton platform and a larger shelter on the Bristol-bound side. It's hard to appreciate that in former times, this was an important junction with 7 platforms and a locomotive and carriage works employing over 400 hundred people. The first station (and the one open today) was on the Bristol and Exeter Railway, and opened on 14 June 1841, with trains running from Bristol to Bridgwater, and was extended to Exeter in 1844. Highbridge was provided with a standard Brunel-designed station in the Italianate style, with the main offices on the Up (Bristol) platform. The next development was the opening of the Somerset Central Railway from Highbridge to Glastonbury on 28 August 1854, extended in 1858 a few miles westwards to the little seaside resort of Burnham-on-Sea via one of the rare rail-rail level crossings across the Bristol and Exeter tracks. The Somerset Central buildings were smaller, brick-built affairs, but the station - at a 45 degree angle to the Bristol & Exeter line - was provided with five platforms! The Somerset Central Railway amalgamated with the Dorset Central Railway in 1862, and Highbridge became the site of the company's main engineering works, although only one locomotive was built there - the main activity being carriages and wagons manufcature and rolling stock maintenance. The Bristol and Exeter became part of the Great Western Railway (GWR) in 1876. Thus things remained until 1930, when the railway works were closed. In 1951, the line from Highbridge to Burnham closed to regular traffic, although summer excursion trains survived until 1962 and freight in 1963. In 1966 the remainder of the Somerset and Dorset (S&D) line closed, and Highbridge reverted to being a small 2-platform station. A few miles of the S&D line east to Bason Bridge survived for freight traffic until 1972. The GWR buildings remained until the late 1970s when they were demolished (despite being listed) replaced with smaller bus shelter type huts - since replaced by more modern equivalents. The site of the former works is now occupied by light industy and the remains of the S&D station now lie under a new housing development, appropriatelt enough called 'Somerset Way' and 'Dorset Close'. The station has a small car-park and cycle racks, and a ticket machine, but is otherwise fairly bleak. There is roughly an hourly service of trains in each direction on the Cardiff-Exeter line, with peak-time departures to London via Bristol.

As the name implies, this serves the well-known Somerset holiday resort of Weston-super-Mare…read more The station itself is on a loop off the main Bristol-Taunton-Exeter main line, thanks to the backward nature of its residents in the 1840s, who resisted proposals for the route of the original main line to run closer to the town. Instead, on 14 June 1841, Weston was connected to the main line by a branch, just over a mile long, and worked initially by horse-drawn carriages. Horse traction remained until 1851, by which time the town had begun to regret being on the end of a branch. This was rectified in 1884 with the construction of the present loop and a handsome station built in the local stone, with large glass canopies over two through platforms and a bay platform. A separate station for summer excursion trains was built just to the north, but closed in 1964. The loop line was singled in 1972, which has since become something of a bottleneck. The station now has a regular service of trains from Weston to Bristol Parkway and from Taunton to Cardiff, providing a half-hourly service to Bristol and an hourly service south to Taunton. This is supplemented by a handful of trains to and from London, and a small number of Cross-Country trains from Plymouth or Paignton to Newcastle. Cross-Country would like to operate more services to Weston, but the timetable is constrained by the single track. The station buffet has been turned into a pub, named 'Off the Rails', known for its changing selection of real ales and cider, and it also does food. There are entrances both to the station approach and the platform, so it's easy to pop in for a pint while you are waiting! The station has level access throughout, a taxi rank, cycle storage and a large car park. The service they provide in the shop is basically that they are experts at finding the best deals - plus they have lots of in-house contacts with airlines. I used them to get flights to and around South America - it meant that she had the headache of matching flights to our schedule. She asked all the right questions, such as how much do we sacrifice cheaper flights for stopover time? It made a big commitment of money a lot more reassuring, and I did fare a lot better than friends who were booking by themselves at the same time. The girl I think was honestly more excited about my plans than I was at the time. I was given her direct number and when I had a query a few months later it was answered clearly and quickly. The company also deals with the high end custom package holidays if you have that sort of dosh, and I'm sure also are very good at doing the quick-fix europe dashes. They both are open early but close early so if leaving Chepstow you'll most likely be buying on the train - 2 platforms available There aren't many connections at Chepstow unfortunately which places the town in a strange position as being close to Bristol by car but ages away by train. Trains going deeper into England will take you to Cheltenham Spa via Lydney and trains going deeper into Wales will take you to Cardiff and/or Maesteg. The station is kept in decently good shape with an overpass to get you between the two platforms. It's also in a really convenient location only minutes walking from Tesco and the town centre. There's also some limited seating available under cover from rain. My only complaint is that on the side of the station that gets you to Cardiff has a back area that is overgrown with weeds looking out into a dirt patch. It can get really creepy there at night and sometimes when I'm waiting for the train late I always have in mind that no one would be able to hear me scream!

So you may start seeing them around town. I called them from work a few days ago and they arrived pretty quickly. I had a little chat to the driver and found that the company is co-operatively owned and run by ex crown drivers and employees, it seems like a really good idea and gives them a chance to own a bit of a business. They claim to be a 24 hour service, which I can't verify for sure. They also have the slightly bigger cars for when there's 5 or 6 of you and it seems silly to get 2 smaller taxis. Worth giving them a chance - you can even pre-book a taxi online.

The lack of travellers contributes to the feeling too, with school kids seeming to make the up the majority of the footfall. A lot of the time all you've got is the birds for company. It's on the Severn Beach line, and you can get connections to the rest of the network at Temple Meads which is only a ten minutes away if you take the train from here. Unfortunately this line has annoyingly infrequent trains (twice an hour, if that). However, it is very pretty, with views of Avonmouth and various historic parts of the Bristol along the way. As I said, it's unstaffed and amenities are pretty thin on the ground. There is no ticket office, so you'll have to buy on the train (and can do so without the worry of a penalty fare). There isn't anything really, in fact, apart from a timetables board and some cycle racks. It would be a bit much to ask anything more of such a small station anyway.
