Finally went into the new location for Mega Gaming and Comics recently for a game with some friends. Truth be told, I was not impressed. They have plenty of floorspace, don't get me wrong, and they have a lot of inventory, most of it locked behind glass doors that you have to call a sales person over to open. Seated there for a couple of hours, I found that the place is kept at a temperature that is a bit too warm. Combine that with the lighting that is too stark and the lack of sound proofing that causes echoes to occur everywhere, and staying within the building for any length of time is not a pleasant experience. I get the distinct feeling that this is a storefront where they want you to come in, select something, buy it, and get out. I felt no sense of community in the store, no warmth (except for the heat), and no real welcomeness. read more

Really great selection!! Went in to trade some old comics and they were very accommodating and helpful. Their selection of Pokemon cards is also awesome, and picked up some while I was here!! My only suggestion/complaint is the lack of manga, which I was hoping they'd have more of. But nonetheless, still a great store :) read more

I have been looking for blank sketch covers and every time i ask they say they are still in the warehouse; they are not going to sell themselves from the warehouse. RESEALED POKÉMON PACKS. If I could give it 0 stars I would. I came here looking for Pokémon. The price for the sticker collection was 40$, almost 1.5x higher than other card stores, I felt bad leaving without anything so I got it.When I came home I found that the plastic part was reglued to 3/4 sides, as the paint was already on the plastic covering that was already coming off. Another thing was that the promo card was already damaged. And as expected, no hits. Not to mention that my Rare card was in the wrong spot... disappointed. read more

Mega gaming and comics has a large variety of things to look at and enjoy. They have plenty of table top games, Funko pops, trading cards, of course comics and more. However, with this large selection, comes a very large price tag. They also love to display their right to look up prices before you purchase an item so in case the market has made said item go up, the price they're selling it for goes up with it. I've had situations in the past where I'd pick up something and they decided they're going to look it up, then say "actually the price went up 20 dollars more" Just recently, I wanted to get a specific comic that was a key issue. I called mega gaming and comics up to see if they had it in stock and they did. I said how much, they then said $150. This of course wouldn't be a problem if the comic was being listed on eBay for less than $100. They were over $50 dollars above market. I brought this to their attention and they mentioned that their comic is "near mint" and other sold listings were in the $120 to $140 range (notice still not $150) I said it doesn't matter what they sold for in the past if I can buy one right now for $89.99. They had a plethora of excuses such as "that one for $89.99 isn't near mint like ours" so I said no ill pass and I ordered the one off eBay for more than $50 dollars less than they had it for. It came in and there's not a scratch, tear, crease or mark on it. I like supporting small businesses, and I encourage others to do so, but I only support those who are fair to their customers, and fair to the community. read more

My favorite part of collecting comics is searching in the back issues for the comic on my want list. This store has plenty of comics to help me with that but they will eBay every single comic when you take them to the counter. I do not understand why some stores do this. To me as a customer, I feel used. Prices do change but take care of your inventory yourselves. It is pointless for me to ever go back there. I recently became a student at the University, looked for my local comic shop and was very pleased to find this one. The staff is helpful and always asks if you need help finding things when you walk in. I'm female and have definitely experienced some gatekeeping from other stores or assumptions that I didn't even know what I was looking at. This store didn't have that kind of atmosphere at all and they have always been welcoming to me. Good selection and great mix of new releases and back issues. I will definitely keep coming in on Tuesdays for my next issue in the series and supporting my local. read more

I have never been the largest fan of Comics but wanted to check out what all the buzz was about this shop so I came in and saw! I am really glad I did, even though I did not buy anything I enjoyed the shop and enjoyed seeing everything that was inside. This store has a wide range of different comics from more recent comics to older ones that get more attention. The comics here are great! I find myself liking ones that are more superhero focused and this place has a ton of those! It was super awesome to see inside. When it comes to gamings you again can find some awesome games ranging from board games to card games and everything in between. The employees here were super friendly and nice. They asked several times if I needed help finding anything. I would for sure recommend this shop here in town! read more

History: Mega Gaming & Comics used to be in business in the old Royal Park plaza a couple doors down from the dollar theater. The owners changed and the business moved to the Oaks Mall Plaza before it closed a few years ago. The original owners recently opened the store back up on Newberry Road in the same plaza as Gypsy Palace. While they were setting up shop they merged the old Gypsy Palace and Sims Music spaces together to form a larger store. I'm more gamer than comic reader, so I was excited to see another store in town open up that sold designer board games. The last place that had a similar sized collection of games was Level Up Gaming, but they've been closed for three years now. Aside from designer board games, they also sell Magic the Gathering, Warhammer, various D&D items, comics and other collectible miniature/card games. If you're into regular old super hero comics, you'll enjoy their selection. If alternative comics are your thing you might find something if you dig hard enough, but it won't be easy. The fellow that works during the day knows the comic side of the business well, and can point you towards some good selections if you tell him what you're interested in. At night the staff seems to have a little more expertise on the gaming side. This is also when they hold various gaming events, Magic being their most popular. The board game selection has continued to grow over the past year, but the prices don't offer much incentive to buy them. They are all sold at standard suggested retail price, which wouldn't be a problem if there weren't so many online competitors that can often beat their price by a third even after shipping. One way they could possibly turn a profit and sell at a lower rate would be to buy/sell used games. Oh and the place has never smelt of body odor once. read more

lame, lame, lame! Drove two hours from Orlando to stop by the shop. I asked one of the sales clerks if everything was in order, and he said "it should be but, A lot of it isn't. It could be hard to find you just have to look through everything." Fine, so I did. I spent a solid hour looking for a Comics. When I found what I was looking for I proceeded to the register. When I got there one of the owners said "this comic should've been in there" As he looked it up on the web and saw that it was in high demand! I replied "what does that mean?" "So what, I can't buy it with the price you have on there because you guys don't have your stuff organized??? He then said "we've got signs around the store stating prices may vary." And " we're also not in the business of losing money." Funny, because the whole hour I was in there I heard him bitch and moan about building this NEW store that they are constructing and about getting ripped off by the company that's doing their cement and tile. So they've got plenty of money obviously!! Out of respect I called about 10 minutes later and told him how lame him and his store was for wasting my time and being a store owner like so many other comic shops that when you get to the register they then go on eBay and tell you oh it's $50. Bottom line is this store sucks, the owners suck, do not waste your time looking for Comics because the price on the comic, is not the price they'll charge!!! Mega Comics has a large selection of comics, board games, and card games. If I need back issues I come here, though the prices for back issues are not great. There is always a bunch of new comics available too. Employees are standoffish. Don't go in the mornings because they open in the afternoon. They do not accept returns either, so make sure you want what you get or you're SOL. read more

They absolutely have no shame or decency. They do not honor their own promotions or promises. They jack up the price of new release hot books on RELEASE day. They reprice back issues based on ebay prices at the counter. Why would anyone do business with a place like this? No idea but not me ever again. Having not bought a comic book in 20 years, I'm not sure why I decided to stop in at this place. But I'm glad I did. Gave one of the employees* a description of what I'm into, and he pointed me in the right direction to get me started again. The place is super-organized. Like to the point where I was immediately able to find issues of books that I read 20+ years ago. Not sure why an earlier reviewer said the place wasn't "kid-friendly." There's a sign on the door that warns you against letting your kids handle the merchandise in a way that'll make it difficult to sell, so if "kid-friendly" in that review means letting your children tear things up that don't belong to them, then yeah, it's not "kid-friendly." And neither should anywhere else be, for that matter. Don't let your kids run around like feral animals, and I'm sure you'll be fine. *So I'm not sure what an earlier reviewer meant in her tip when she said the employees "weren't helpful." read more

Over the years, Mega Comics has been a part of my life, but it wasn't until they moved locations and from what I can tell hired new staff members, that I felt my business was not only welcomed but appreciated. It is hard shopping for comics as a woman because many have the misconception that I am shopping for someone other than myself. When I was a student, I admittedly had bad experiences with the staff and many of the customers at Mega Comics because I felt like I wasn't been taken seriously as a fan. On my most recent visit, I went during the day time and it felt like a completely private, VIP shopping experience. I was not only greeted cordially, but both gentlemen working offered their assistance to me without pressure of purchasing anything or the judgment often reserved by the truest of comic fans. When I asked questions, they were answered with enthusiasm and without the harsh judgement I remember from when I shopped there as a college undergrad. The diversity of comics as well as board and table top gaming equipment has always been my litmus test for other comic stores I've visited over the years. Their products are well-organized, very clean, and fairly priced. To the gentlemen who worked hard, setting up the shop for the rest of the day, thank you for giving me the space to shop at my leisure, and complimenting me on my combination of graphic novel choices. When it comes to purchasing comics and games in Gainesville, throw all of your money at Mega Comics because they have really amped up their game since I last visited many years ago. Traveling to a comic convention in Orlando a few weeks ago, stopped in Gainesville on the way thru to see what the comic stores held there. I always enjoy stores that have good stock and some reader copies from a bargain bin. Went into Mega Comics at 4000 W Newberry Rd, I admit they had a ton of new stuff on the walls and multiple tables of longboxes of back issues, so I was anxious to dive in. Lots of gaming stuff as well but I already get that online with discounts so not interested in that this day. The back issue boxes were on the tables and underneath, crammed so tight I had to pull a few out before I could even look thru them and the boxes below were extremely hard to look thru. But as I did I noticed every comic in the boxes were in two categories, either at the higher collectible value or the ones that were newer and should be at most cover price were priced at least 50 cents over cover price, no matter the condition. Even many issues that are easily in most sellers' dollar boxes were priced higher than cover price, so no bargain hunting here. I asked the employee if they give a discount on bulk purchases, which many stores do when you buy a substantial amount, he gave me a quick "no!" and that was it. I went back and continued to look until my wife pointed out the signs every few feet sticking up from the boxes, stating that the store reserves the right to increase the price of any comic once it gets brought up to the counter. So, while the employees stand behind the counter just chatting (more on that in a second), they don't have time to research and reprice any comics that may have gone up in value so they have price on them which shows their purchase price as you get them, they rely on their customers who get lured into thinking they may have found a good deal to bring up the comics they just spent their time searching for and then hit them with an increased price? That didn't sit well with me, I thought it was lazy of the story since most every retail store you go into will honor the price on an item, even if it's their fault for pricing it incorrectly. But here, they have the customers search out the upcoming hot comics for them and then hit them up with an higher price that they most likely would not have pulled it for if they had known and not wasted their time. I continued my search anyway, looking for a few fillers I needed for my collection. While I stood going thru their DC boxes near the counter, I overhear the 2 employees joking about a previous customer that I assume had been there recently, talking loud enough for all to hear in the store so I guess they were proud of the "customer service" incident. The one employee was telling the other one how a guy had come up to purchase a handful of back issues and that he (the employee) started going thru them to see if the prices were correct. ( I had about 25 comics in my stack at this point so I was just thinking is he really going to make me stand there and wait while he goes thru each comic looking to reprice them?). So the employee tells that he went thru the guy's stack and he was fine with them all until a particular one that the employee felt needed to be repriced. He laughed that he tacked on an additional $15 onto the comic and then customer said "cmon man, you gotta be kidding?!", and at that point he told the customer to take it or leave it. The 2nd employee laughed and said "what a jerk!", and then the 1st employee said yeah, and that when the guy argued about the high pricing how he told him to leave the store. I have no idea what comic it was, I honestly don't care, that is horrible customer service to mock and belittle a paying customer like that and laugh about it, and even worse to talk crap about them openly in the store where others can hear. I didn't want to be one of this guy's stories later on so I just left my comics on the table and walked out. And I have no intention of ever giving money to a store like this that treats it's customer like that. This may be the largest store in the Gainesville area, but it just shows that someone needs to open up and give them some competition with actual friendly customer service. read more

They're probably the best comic book shop in town. I've had some issues in the past, but I generally feel very welcome here. My one complaint is that the comics are separated into two vague sections, DC/Marvel and everything else; after that, there is no real system of organization and it infuriates me. It's like reverse OCD. So, if you can't find something, you have to bother one of the employees to help you find the title you're looking for. There are some really friendly people who work there, and they have great deals on games and a wide selection. read more

Everyone's experience here will likely be different. For example, if you don't have kids, live in your parents' basement, or haven't bought a comic in 20 years, then this place may seem like Comic Utopia. However, if you do have kids and they are normal, curious about super heroes, and have an interest in books, then the Internet is likely your best avenue for buying comics. Putting up a sign telling parents not to allow kids to destroy merchandise is a brilliant idea..., if you're bringing in a crew of "feral animals." However, reasonable people with reasonable kids don't have to be reminded up front that they're in a business and should conduct themselves accordingly. If it's "Look but don't touch", then Amazon beats this place hands-down. If you're not "sure" what I'm talking about, you probably aren't a parent. read more

Browsed around, two women walked in and asked about the free comics and suddenly they had some! My GF had overheard too. We put back the $80 worth of trade paperbacks we were going to buy and left. This store had terrific selection and a great/knowledgeable staff. However, if you plan to sell anything to them, please think again. Anyone who sells things to a retailer has to understand that these people are NOT collectors, and intend to make a profit off of whatever you sell to them. Mega Gaming & Comics takes this to the extreme, though, compared to the comic stores I called in my town of Austin, TX. For a collection worth over 400 dollars, they offered less than 100 dollars. Three gaming stores in the Austin area offered at least 100 to us, and this would have been ideal if we'd been able to haul these back to Austin. While there were good things about this store, the experience of selling was enough to not make me want to return for anything. Having lived in Gainesville for 21 years, before moving to Austin, your selections in this town are limited. read more

This review is for the online store. I spent a few good hours searching the website to see which books are in stock and which aren't. I bookmarked the ones that I was interested in purchasing. Having never ordered from this store before, I placed an order for four copies of one book that had a good price, as a trial run. The shipping amount didn't quite add up, but the order went through and payment was accepted via Paypal. I received an email from the owner, Sherif Habib. He writes, and I quote: "Hi there, I'm afraid we are out of stock on these comics on our website. I just refunded you via Paypal. Thanks!" Later that night, when I was searching Ebay for the same book, I saw a new listing less than an hour old. Lo and behold, the seller is "megagamingandcomics"! I wrote him an email stating that I found his listing and called him out for being the liar that he is. No response. Since then, he has sold and listed another copy of the book. In a way, I feel a little relieved. I mean, if he's dishonest about something like this, then who knows what sort of underhanded tactics he uses for grading, return policy, etc. I had bookmarked a large number of expensive variants that I was interested in, so it looks like I dodged a bullet. In closing, if you stumble upon this site and find a book for an attractive price, don't hold your breath. He'll compare prices online, tell you that it's out of stock, and refund your money. You're just doing his work for him by pointing out books that are in demand. Dishonest. Dishonorable. Don't waste your time. read more

Seriously? This is one of the best comic shops I've been in in the 25 years I've been an active reader, collector and professional in the comic book industry. The staff is pleasant and accommodating. Their stock seems to never run out and I never miss an issue--they were even nice enough to re-order some issues of Blue Estate that I had missed while I was moving and traveling. Great discounts for subscription plans also. Hell, I'd drive an hour to buy books here if I lived anywhere else. I would also like to add that the gaming supplies here are fantastic. I've been totally turned on to Settlers of Catan recently and, now, I can easily obtain all the sets and expansions for the game. read more

OK so we've all heard different little stories and what not about the wonderful world of Mega Games & Comics. Ive never seen a business work so hard to undermine themselves. Ive certainly heard this of this sort of thing happening here before but I was there today and watched it go down for myself so I know this BS is legit. I go into Mega about 3 times a year just to check out their stock. I was quite impressed today. Not only did they stock a LOT of different titles they even stocked many copies of titles. 5 copies of the new Dixit odyssey, 6 copies of Ascending Empires even 2 copies of Dominant Species (more on this below.) Id even said to Tanya about how impressed I was with their actual stock even though their pricing was either full MSRP or in a few cases I do believe a few dollars OVER MSRP. It shows me that they are selling board games and people are going into their store for board games. Now I'm going to talk about the previous 2nd hand story that I know about. Dominant Species. Corey played the game for the 1st time & wanted a copy. He asked Mega for it and they told him not only do they not carry it but they have to order 2 copies at a time so if he wanted it at full MSRP of $79.99 he would have to commit to buying BOTH copies or they would not order it for him as they didn't feel the game was right for their shelves. Well here we are a year after it's release & low and behold...THEY HAVE 2 COPIES on their shelf. I suppose this means they ordered 2 copies and haven't sold any. Yet if they'd have ordered it for Corey they would have at least made a sale of one of the copies already. What crappy customer service is that? So tday I'm just about ready to leave the premises & am at my usual place of browsing comics. I can't find this quirky little 6 book story arc put out by Dark Horse Comics several years back called The Milkman Murders and there's a group of girls at the counter checking out and asking Batman questions. I decided I'd wait to ask about the comics when the counter area cleared out and just continued to browse. Next in line after the girls left was a guys who bought Magic cards, a deck box and sleeves for his cards. Bought and paid for he asks "Do you mind if sleeve up before I leave?" Simple enough question and I begin to make my way around the comic table but stop cold in my tracks as the owner of the stores says "Well, we don't let people use our tables unless something is scheduled and we don't have anything scheduled right now." The guys states his case calmly about wanting to verify that the cards feel right in these particular sleeves to which he's then told he's already bought the things and he can't return them if they do or don't work. He continues to press a bit just trying to take a moment and sleeve the damned cards he just purchased and the owner digs his heels in deeper insistent that he has no intention to let the man do anything related to his hobby there in the store, in my mind treating him as a 2nd class citizen now that he's got the money out of him. I was appalled. I was stunned. There sat what I believe to be like 6 large empty tables. Chairs abandoned. Beside the guy and me only 2 other people left in the entire store and he's telling this guy basically to GTFO. Seriously? This is how you run a business these days? Over charge for product, refuse to special order for customers requesting to (and I forgot to mention this part) pay ahead of time for a game and wait for it to arrive and then running them out of your store the instant you have cash in hand? What a fucking prick this guy is. There I said it and if you are offended by that I apologize I just can't think of anything else that works in that sentence and feels remotely right. I dropped the comics in my hand & walked out the door. I stopped the guy in the parking lot and spoke to him just a bit and could see he was pretty pissed (even though he completely maintained his composure during the discourse with Sir Shopkeeper Extraordinaire.) Seemed like a pretty cool guy, he's mainly a Magic player and complained that it sucks because Mega is the only place in town to hold tourneys. Really is that the case? That's a crying shame if it is. Anyway Gave him a card for Gainesville Gamer's and dropped Robert's name a source for contact to find players and what not (hope you don't mind Robert didn't give him your info just told him to find you in the Gainesville Gamer's Group here and send you a msg.) Mega Games is not what's called a "Friendly Local Gaming Store." While the store is immaculately clean, it's always empty when I show up on the rare occasions I've been there. Granted, this is before the gaming tables are "open," but why are they closed in the first place? It makes no sense. No one's even allowed to even sleeve the cards they've just bought unless the tables are open. The selection is great. No doubt, but when the owner sells promo (read: free) cards for a profit or sells board games at MSRP (when no online retailer does), the F in FLGS is definitely misplaced. The comics selection is great, but the employee I talked with seemed to not care at all about it. I don't know if it's same same employee I've heard horror stories about, but regardless, this is a store that cares more about profit than their customers and just as a note to Chris, afaik, this is NOT owned by the same people that owned Mega Comics and Gaming (similar name for an obvious reason). read more

Was in Gainesville for the day, Mega Gaming & Comics gets my review. Their store had a very large selection of gaming, trade paperbacks and back issues, unfortunately for me they had many back issues I was wanting to complete a few series. It was unfortunate because of the pricing and poor customer response from the employee in charge. I noticed every single back issue, even ones that were fairly new and still cover price in every other corner of the world, Mega Comics attaches a 50 cent to $1 add-on to the cover price of each issue. I understand if there's a reason for upgrading price due to pricing guide, but as I was told they just do that with each comic as standard practice. With each comic at 12%-20% above cover, I was hoping that spending a substantial amount would get me at least a 10% discount for bulk purchase. So when I walked up to the counter with $700 worth of back issues ( all current issues at cover price value, no premium issues) and asked if they gave any discount for this amount of purchase, I was told a very curt and short "No", and then he walked away for the other employee to ring me up. The other employee mentioned they give a tiered subscription discount, though this has absolutely no effect on current purchase or people who travel. In comparison to this, I was at a store outside of Charlotte a few months ago that with a $350 back-issue purchase the employee immediately offered me 10% off without me even asking and threw in a free comic box to carry them. While discounts are the decision of the store, most I go to with that level of spending affords me something, especially when the comics have an upsell fee to begin with. I decided after the employee's reaction with me to put about $200 of comics back and only bought the rest since the other employee had already rung them up at that point. So while Mega Gaming & Comics may be well stocked, between their overpriced items and their sales approach of wanting a one-time sale rather than a long term customer, I'll make sure to invest my time and money elsewhere when I travel to this city. read more

I guess i'm not the only one since i saw another review with the same complain I have about the online store. I bought 2 comics only for 5.50 each + shipping. the order went through and they charged my paypal account. A little after i received an email from paypal saying that the money had being refunded and the store left a message saying the comics were out of stock. A day later, i went back to the online store and the comics were in stock but with different prices. they now are 20.50 and 15.50. For some reason they did not like the price they had put on the comics and thought they deserved it more money for something that was already SOLD! It was not yours anymore to change the price since i had already paid for it. Not sure what kind of business you guys are running there but that's a shitty way to treat a customer. read more
