Le Roi du Wonton - Rice that came with General Tao Shrimp

I have had Le Roi du Wonton on my list of places to try for years now, but they aren't open on the weekends and when we come to Montreal, it's usually just for the weekend. However, we were in Montreal on a Friday and early enough to dine there before they closed at 7pm so I finally got to experience their delightful wontons. I ordered their famous namesake, the wonton soup ($6.99) and my husband got the General Tao Shrimp ($17.99). My husband was so excited to see General Tao Shrimp on the menu. It was our first time seeing such an item. He LOVES General Tao Chicken and he LOVES shrimp, so he had to get the General Tao Shrimp. He loved it! His dish had 10 large and juicy shrimp battered and deep-fried with a sweet, spicy and sour sauce on top with onions, carrots, bell peppers and green onions. The sauce was reminiscent of the sauce on sweet and sour pork, but with a spicy kick. I had one shrimp and agree that it was fantastic. His dish came with a small bowl of white rice. My wonton soup was also delicious. It came with 5 huge wontons. Like the biggest wontons I've ever seen in my life, lol. They were filled with ground pork. The filling was a little saltier than I like, but I don't eat a lot of salt, so I think most people would think it's fine. It had some chopped up lettuce, thin slices of omelette, seaweed, some pickled vegetable that I could not identify, and green onions. Very tasty and such a good price! We got a pot of complimentary jasmine tea to start. And for dessert we were given complimentary wafers. Two sweet little old ladies ran the show when we were there. They were very welcoming. And they practiced excellent hand hygiene. They were both cooking in the kitchen when I went up to pay. One of them washed her hands before and after cashing me out at the register. The place is very utilitarian. You do not come for the decor. They seem to have some faithful regulars though. When we were there a lady who appeared like she perhaps came every Friday as when she arrived she announced it's Friday and she was greeted like they were expecting her. She ordered a dish to eat there and one to take away afterwards. I can see why they would have a loyal following. I definitely recommend! Street parking only, as expected for this part of town. We walked over from our hotel. Oh, it's cash or debit only. They don't take credit cards. (116)

They seem to do a fair bit of takeaway for bubble teas and foods. We were seated quickly and the menu was accessible via a QR code, except the code printed on our table was so faded that our scanner didn't recognise it and we had initial trouble loading up the menu. There was another of the same code printed on a specials menu, which is how we got our menu up. The food took about 10 minutes and there were a few other groups dining in. The vasir rice is something we had wanted to try for a few months, and it was overall worth the wait, although it's still not my all-time fave minced pork rice. The pork was tender and thankfully they serve a good amount of juice so the whole thing wasn't dry, which has been an issue with some other versions of this dish elsewhere. The use of stir fried veggies is interesting and again something we haven't seen elsewhere, and while it's not my fave, it's one of the better versions we've had. I initially balked at the seemingly copious amounts of sauce over the cheese potato korokke, but apparently we needed all that sauce and, while is rather not have cheese in my korokke, it was cooked like it should (crisp on the outside, tender inside) and was tasty. Staff come around with a handheld EFTPOS for payment, and it was all in all a pretty seamless experience. I would return for the same and other stuff in the future.

We ordered: General Tao poutine ($16) Fried squid tentacles ($7) Iron plate noodles ($14) Oyakodon ($13.45) Beef noodle soup ($13.25) Drinks: Dark oolong creamy ($5.75) Aloe lemonade winter melon ($5.7) Passion fruit green tea ($5.8) Pretty decent size portions here! The general Tao poutine was surprisingly really delicious and unique! It used sweet potato fries and instead of gravy, a sweet savory sauce! The squid tentacles were super crispy. The iron plate noodles were kind of basic. It straight up tasted of just black pepper. The oyakodon was pretty okay too. The beef noodle soup had really chewy noodles and the beef was good but portion was smaller than I thought. Don't order this if you can't handle spice! The drinks were especially good and extremely worth it if you order their biggest size! Love that they come with so many options and toppings.

In short, Presotea's milk tea was creamy, the toppings to drink ratio a little high, boba was a little over done but passable, and the price a little high compared to home. Still a good option if you're in the area. L O C A T I O N Presotea is located in this little strip mall/shopping area that has a variety of shops. Parking itself is not many spots but it wasn't hard to find a spot directly in the front. I N S I D E They only allow 8 people inside at the moment and it's a small spot. No eating/drinking inside. M E N U Their menus are a little disjointed and wish they had just a simple menu that displayed their full offerings. They have different "series" of drinks like Brown Sugar, Slush, Fruits like Mango, Milk Teas, Wintermelon, etc. Due to it being my first time here, I opted to get a standard drink like a black milk tea or a jasmine milk tea. Since I got a black milk tea the other day, I figured I'd go with the Jasmine Milk Tea with black tapioca/boba as this is my way to decipher if a place knows what it's doing and of course no sugar and no ice. The drink itself was nice a creamy with a nice hint of jasmine tea. Now was it oversteeped? I couldn't tell as they did large heaping scoops of the black tapioca which had some sugar already. My 0% sugar tea felt at least 30% sugared with the toppings. So super glad I stayed with my no sugar choice. Generally a lot of boba shops tend to oversteep their jasmine and cover the bitterness with ice and sugar to help the taste. But overall, it was perfect for me in terms of flavor. The boba itself was chewy a little mushy on the outside, but at least fully cooked through. There was a slight sweetness in their boba which was great. S E R V I C E They seemed to be busy when we came as it did take a bit of time for them to get our drinks. We may have just ordered right after a large online order. But they were quite nice and relatively quick. O V E R A L L They have a variety of drinks for those who like fruit or teas. I just wish they had a more streamlined menu so that you know exactly what items they do have versus various flyers of different series or Top 10 drinks. Or wish they had a way to order your own drink (like standards) where you can pick the tea, milk options, topping options, and sugar/ice levels. Again we're spoiled in California with a lot of boba shops, but this place is somewhere we'd frequent if we lived here as they have the drink options we'd care about with a variety of teas to select as well as a crema series. Now if only it were slightly cheaper!

They were all very very good. The portions are generous, they fill up your tea with tapioca balls and the service is quite fast. I definitely recommend this spot if you are a beginner or a connaisseur with bubble tea.
