We arrived in 'the in-between'.. the hour between winding down lunch and the start of dinner service. The host seated us; informed us of the timing when giving us the menus for dinner service. The menu is vast for dinner with multiple appetizers, salads, pasta options and main courses. Added to that is a great wine list and a 'special' list as well. Unfortunately for me, the timing of our arrival meant the stuffed grapes leaves were not available (they were being made when I requested and needed time to marinate and chill), so..I chose the tapenade with veggies being a GF gal. Delicious choice!! Hubby wanted dessert- our host/waitstaff was able to secure the last piece of carrot cake for him which was absolutely delicious! We've been here at least five times because we live close by and really wanted this place to be good. Unfortunately, it's just not. This last visit sealed it for us. Every sauce we tried was bitter -- the hummus, baba ghanoush, and even the tzatziki, which is usually a safe bet anywhere. The baba ghanoush in particular was shockingly bitter, nothing like what you'd expect at other Mediterranean restaurants. The meats were bland and under-seasoned, and overall the food lacked balance and flavor. On top of that, the atmosphere was incredibly off-putting. We could clearly hear cooks and waitstaff talking trash and making inappropriate, disrespectful comments. It was uncomfortable and honestly felt more like being at a Waffle House at 3 a.m. than a sit-down Mediterranean restaurant. It feels like the menu needs to be tasted and adjusted by someone who actually understands Mediterranean flavors, and the staff needs basic professionalism. Even the bread could be good with a small tweak, but everything feels slightly off. We kept coming back hoping it would improve, but after this visit, we're done. We won't be back. read more

We took some friends, who were visiting out for what used to be a great restaurant but eh not any more. I ordered a $41 steak and it was so dry (I asked for medium well, with pink). I'm not sure how you get a steak to be red inside but still dry as a bone. Trying to cut it and not shake the table was fun! Not! The "roasted" veggies were also dry and ick. I went through four sodas and water just trying to get what I ate down, which wasn't much. Our friends also commented that their lamb, swordfish and veggies were dry. We used to frequent this place regularly but no more. I doubt we will eat here again or recommend it. read more

Great local spot in Helena that is on the lighter side. When visiting Helena there are a lot of steak and fried options but Mediterranean grill is a nice change to that. The restaurant itself is cute with a hometown feel. There is plenty of room to sit and the staff are patient and kind. They have an open kitchen so you can see the chef. We ordered the appetizer sampler which was prettt small but they did bring out the extra pita bread which was hot and fresh The salmon was great and light with almonds on top. I was here late February with my son who lives in Montana. He knows Mediterranean food is my favorite so we came here for dinner. We didn't have a reservation but were early so was able to get a small table. It was nice to watch the wood burning oven . The music wasn't anything middle eastern but it was low enough we could still talk. Our server was Jade and we were very well taken care of. My son had the lamb kabob and it was very good. I had a kabob with shrimp and my favorite fish, opah, which is rarely seen on a menu . I was a little disappointed, the pieces of fish were small, so not able to taste much . The shrimp were a good size. Both our meals came with veggies , bread and rice. An expensive meal but it was good. I will get something different next time. read more

I wanted to love this place, but walked away a little above "meh" and under "wow". I tried the stuffed grape leaves and felt a little off with seemed to have a nod of tomato sauce mixed with the rice, herbs and pine nuts. It was more savory than tangy, and I like a tangy grape leaf. I also ordered the lamb kabobs and the portion was 5 skewered but the meat itself is a tapas portion, tender and flavorful served with dipping spice, salt and a small mixed salad - wonderful. My husband had the gyro daily special served with a side of soup and we were both impressed with the soft and large pita bread! The onions were pickled another plus. The server, though new, was quick with water refills and constantly assessable on the floor going from table to table. The seating though, ugh. The pinnacle of this place is the endless wine menu, I mean it is crazy. It' could be a wine bar thet also serves food, but the chairs are not comfortable so I wouldn't want to come here to linger and enjoy wine. A redo of the interior with better decor and seating would put this place higher up on my list of places to visit again. This restaurant feels like you're walking into a cafe in southern Italy. The künefe dessert was amazing! We also had the Lasagna Romagnola and the Swordfish Kabob. I'd give this place a two-star but my two fellow diners enjoyed their meals, so they get the benefit of the doubt. The hostess was a young lady, short and trim that had obviously never had customer service training. We were greeted with "What can we do for you?" Seriously, little girl!? Before I could get out of my mouth "We're here for a massage" my cousin said "We have reservations for dinner." How about "Welcome to Mediterranean Grill, will you be dining with us tonight?" or "Welcome to Mediterranean Grill, do you have reservation this evening?" I got the Shish Kabob which was supposed to be "marinated lamb", and I ordered it cooked medium. The server brought it out and said "Careful, the skewer is incredibly hot". I'm not sure how the skewer could be "incredibly hot" when the meat was cold, as was the Basmati Rice. I'm not sure what the lamb was marinate in as it had literally no taste. ZERO seasoning. Again, ditto for the rice. The grilled veggies were 3/5 and the Caesars Salad was horrible; the romaine was room temperature and not crisp at all. The "appetizer sampler" was good but the three items were about 3 tablespoons each and there was one pita that was cut up into 10 triangles. I'd been to Helena a dozen times over the last 5 years and my cousins always recommended we go there. We did. I was disappointed. I won't go back. This has been my favorite restaurant in Helena over the years, but something has happened. I don't come often. Last night I had a Caesar salad with chicken. Chicken was too dry, pretty much inedible. And the dressing on the salad was too meager. Could hardly taste it. I mentioned the chicken to the server and she said something about a new cook. Also comped me a very good baclava! A relaxing and consistently fun place in downtown Helena. Servers and bartenders know their stuff, and there are generous pours. I like the mixed menu--Mediterranean broadly defined with ample Italian choices too. My favs are the seafood fettuccine--love the broth like sauce and the shrimp kabob grilled in a stone oven. Love the char of that dish as it combines with the spicy lemon marmalade that the shrimp soak in before grilling. As a frequent visitor to Helena I don't get the negative vibes--over the last few years I have been here three times, and had a grand time at every visit. Service was bad. The waitress seemed to want us to hurry up and get out of her way. The appetizer sampler was wonderful, with three choices of dips. We had all had hummus and babganoush, so we chose the other three options. One member of our party is gluten free, so the server split the dippers, half veggies, half flat bread (soft, warm flat bread). Lamb kabobs were tender and grilled perfectly. We agreed the stuffed grape leaves were the best we have had anywhere! And finally, the chocolate Lovin' Spoonful put us into a chocolate coma. Our server was delightful! We had an early dinner here Saturday night. The restaurant wasn't busy. Waited about 15 minutes after being seated before our disgruntled-looking server arrived to take our drink order. By that point, we were ready to walk out. Unfortunately, we placed our order and again waited. Our appetizer of charred and dry stuffed grape leaves arrived after about 20 minutes. Our dinner order arrived after about 30 more minutes. We had the paella and the seafood linguine. The paella was so heavily seasoned with saffron it was bitter, and you could taste nothing else. I actually asked for salt hoping that would help. It didn't. The seafood linguine was without flavor, and salt didn't help it either. By the time our server returned, we needed another beer and our water glasses were empty. We asked for the check instead, and had to wait 15 more minutes. Certainly not worth the amount of time we spent, nor the money. Bad service, bad food. The paella I had from a food truck the previous weekend was 10 times better! read more

Went there for date night on a Wednesday in summer. It was a cool night so we grabbed a table inside. I love the interior colors and the walls, it's like dining alfresco. Lamb Kabobs with special sauce still making me drool as I write this review. My advice is to have them cooked medium because mine was a tad but chewy. Sorry Greeks but the owner is a Turk and the Turks know how to do lamb! Other than that these guys knocked it out of the park. If you are vegan and/or have dairy allergies do NOT eat here. I explained to the server that I couldn't have any dairy. I spoke with her in detail about the ingredients in the dishes that she offered as vegan options. I ordered a bowl of the lentil soup. I ate one spoon full, followed by a second spoonful. After two spoon fulls, i automatically knew that something was wrong. I got ill immediately. I regurgitated outside for several minutes. I was gone so long until my husband came to find me. My husband paid the bill. I walked back into the restaurant as he was walking out. After I got the food that I ingested out of my stomach, we went back in to explain what happened. However, the manager or chef approached us, we aren't sure who he was, but he was the person who greeted us when we returned. He denied responsibility. We even told him that we were not asking for our money back. We just wanted him to know that what they served to me wasn't dairy free or was somehow cross contaminated. Needless to say he was not kind about it and insisted that it was nothing that they served that cause me to become ill. I know that it had to be, because I was fine when I walked in. read more

We decided to have lunch in town and grab a beer after so Mediterranean Grill it was! The menu has a lot of variety. From Greek to Italian - some good offerings! I had the Greek salad and a side of hummus and pita. So good! The salad was super fresh with lettuce, feta, tomato, cucumber and red onion. My husband had the gyro with a side salad. The hummus was very garlicky and the home,are pita nice and warm. We were sat immediately and our server was also good. We look forward to coming back for dinner! I was able to squeeze a table for one with a last minute reservation (highly encouraged) with a table on the patio. The patio is secluded from the street view by flower baskets, which is pretty nice. I ordered a glass of Poggio Anima, an appetizer of mozzarella caprese, and gnocchi with spinach and ricotta as a main dish. The mozzarella (very fresh) caprese comes with a side of warm fresh baked pita bread and huge basil leaves. The pasta dishes come with a choice of soup or salad, I went with a spinach and lentil soup. The gnocchi are very good, and you get quite a bit of them too! Being a Mediterranean restaurant it has a ton of vegetarian options! Highly recommend the gnocchi with spinach and pesto, if they have their lentil and spinach soup, order it! It's delicious! The overall experience was great, considering how full both the patio and the inside of the restaurant were, service was not slow and the different items I ordered came out at a perfect pace and timing. read more

The first sign of concern was the number of mixed cuisines that were on the menu. It's not to say that it can't be done. But, unfortunately, it ultimately ended up being a bust, which just re-enforces what I've found. I decided to go for the gnocchi as it was advertised as homemade, and it's one of my favorite dishes. Now, I'm open to trying different styles of presentation. This one came out as a cross between a ravioli and tortellini. But what was piled on top was unbalanced, which killed the taste. There were grilled peppers, a lot fresh scallions, and shredded cheese. The flavors were competing to each other and over powering. Ultimately, I picked out the gnocchi and left the rest. Service was a bit on the slow side but friendly. The decor made it feel like you were sitting outdoors, which had an open feel. Overall, it was a subpar experience that missed the mark. read more

While I waited for over 20 minutes to get a water refill, didn't dare to get my wine glass refilled (they might have made more money). Our meal took over 2.5 hours and we arrived at 5:30pm on a Monday night.....this was not a Saturday night at 7pm (prime time hours). Overall cute place, patio is great for nice meal outside and the food was good. I am extremely sadden by how poorly this place is managed, the hostess, while being a bus boy/girl down it was that clear, the hostess would clear a table to the next table so the dirty dishes would pile up (next to us of course) and attract more flies instead of being a team player and clearing a finished table. Our server a frantic mess could NOT even clearly communicate about the delays, her communication skills lacked professionalism and promptness. She did not offer any reasonable solutions and due to her lack of communication and poor service her tip matched the lack of effort. This place is N O T cheap and for the price of the food the expectation of service should have been better‼ read more

I have been a steady patron of this restaurant for many years. As always, the food is perfectly prepared and delicious. However, for the first time our service was not acceptable and as such I will probably not have dinner with them for a long time, if ever again. First, our water glasses were dirty and when we asked for new water glasses the waiter said "they look fine to me". Well numerous fingerprints and food particles on the rim of the glass is not acceptable to me. Um, isn't the customer always right? I believe this started the downhill slide from mediocre service to downright rude. We ordered an appetizer and when finished we waited for our dinner salads to arrive. About 20 minutes later we had to flag down the waiter to bring our salads. He then asked if I wanted another glass of wine, which I said yes. Shortly thereafter our main course arrived but not the second glass of wine. When he came to collect plates at the end, I said, "Never mind about the second glass of wine, we're ready to leave." He again stated, "Oh I thought you said no to a second wine" and then turned and left. What the hee haw? Again, customer is always right - no apology and rude behavior from the waiter. It came with soup or salad and I got the soup de jour and it was a Moroccan chicken and vegetable stew and it was amazing. My husband had the seafood linguine and that was also delicious.
