When you make a table booking for the an early seating at the restaurant (6:45) you expect a few…read morevery simple things: 1) Table set and ready for your arrival. 2) Table size corresponding to party size. 3) Preferably not the WORST table in the house next to a busy through fare from the kitchen with nary space for the staff to move through even if we scooted in. Well, the table immediately knocked about 3 stars off the table, but thankfully they did move us to a different table after we complained (which was good because the food we ordered did not fit on our table and we had to monopolize the next one, which they evidently didn't need, so the whole "Sorry, the restaurant is fully booked" argument is moot). There also seemed to be a recurring theme in Oxford restaurants- people were working totally flat out and they need at least 1 if not 2 extra wait staff. Our guy was polite enough, and definitely trying hard to be a good host- though we suspect that he was extremely worried about not being tipped after the table fiasco. Anyways, onto the food. The Oysters were very good and the mix grill was perfectly fine. The Lobster was very firm in the way that I suspect it might have been frozen (In a SEAFOOD specialist?!?) and well the prawns- tesco's won hands down. As the restaurant was popular with families and had a high ceiling; it was extremely echo-y and we left slightly traumatised with our seafood experience. Drool Monster enjoyed his chocolate ice cream very much though.

Food was ok-ish, but was annoyed that I had been served a dry thin tail end of halibut, should've sent it back but I was hungry, service also took a while considering a near empty restaurant. We finished with banoffee pie & cranachan, which wasn't anything spectacular....kinda wished I ordered the 3 course lunch set menu which looked good value at £12, I left feeling slightly indifferent about the food & experience, I guess that's the problem with chains, consistency....Loch not so Fyne.

And yes lots of fish but there is a good choice for everyone Its a long way to go for a lunch but I fully recommend it - and - it is reasonably priced...Ramsay always says his lunches in his places are the best value...and so it was here...and a reasonably priced for the quality...3 courses each, total £75 for the 2 of us Nice

We visited the Rick Stein restaurant on a short stay in Malborough, as my partner loves seafood…read more (Although I am vegetarian, there were options available, including on the set menu.) There are dining rooms both upstairs and down, the latter behind the small bar area. You enter through the shop: the decor - despite this being an 18th century heritage building - is fresh and modern, with dark wood and pale walls, and selected modern art on the walls. We chose the set menu, 3 courses for £26.95. Our starters were the steamed mussels in cider with spring onion and spinach, and roasted red pepper soup; mains were salmon fishcakes with watercress and the chickpea curry (plus a side of hispi cabbage); and we both had the sunken chocolate cake with clotted cream for pudding. (NB the Welsh rarebit isn't veggie - it's made with anchovies.) My starter and main (soup and curry) were perfectly good - the soup especially so - but not exceptional. It didn't surprise me as Rick Stein - both the chef and restaurant - are really all about seafood. My partner found the mussels superb - fresh, sweet, with just the right amount of sauce. Likewise, the fishcakes were excellent and, although they looked small on arrival, they were actually quite filling, and generous on the salmon. The hispi cabbage proved the perfect accompaniment to both mains. The chocolate cake was smooth and velvety, but not too sweet (think a brownie sort of texture) - and perfect if you like dark chocolate. We chose a 250ml glass each of one of the recommended Sauvignon blancs, which also proved a good choice. Service was excellent throughout, and the young server was very skilled at making us feel at home. Including service, the bill came to £95 for two, which for a fine dining experience was pretty good value. Others certainly think so, as on a wet mid-week evening it was packed (so booking definitely advised). There's parking along the main street outside - not a problem in the evening, but potentially a bit more challenging at lunchtime.

The ingredients were fresh and the cocktails tasted great. My colleague tried both the blueberry and passion fruit mojito. They were very colorful and she said they were tasty. I had a classic and a cherry mojito. Both were worth returning for! After a jovial time in the bar, we were taken to the seated area for our meal. The service, attention to detail, politeness and respect of the team were first class ! They really went above and beyond to ensure everyone received excellent service and that our meals were perfect. We ordered dishes to share and they were outstanding. Excellence didn't end there. I always try to get fish and chips at least once during my week trips and where better than a seafood place. It was probably the best fish and chips I've had in the UK. The fish was perfectly battered and fried. Not greasy at all! The peas were perfectly cooked and the fries were not soggy ! Looking forward to returning to barnacles ! PS. Also loved the decor. I can never get enough nautical theme. I felt right at home!!
