I was really impressed with the service that I received when I went to MEC. First, I'd like to say, that any type of sporting/ outdoor store is really intimidating for me because I don't know very much about either of those things. So, I was a little lost and overwhelmed when I first went into MEC to grab some hiking gear, but that quickly went away as one of the employees helped me right away while I was looking for packs. He was very knowledgable about which type of packs were best for what type of hiking and spent a good twenty minutes with me going over how to adjust all of the straps and what to look for in a pack. He even went and grabbed some weight to put in the pack so that I could see how it would feel when I was hiking. Next, I went looking for a pair of hiking boots and again, was very pleased with the service that I got as far as sizing and what to look for in a good boot. I felt very comfortable with my purchases, and felt that I had a good foundation with how to maximize the products that I had bought. As an additional side note, MEC has a really good warranty policy that they call the "Rocksolid Guarantee" where you can basically return a product (within its lifespan) if you are unsatisfied with the product or the advice that you received about the product. read more

So i probably won't be back unless I really need to but my problem is that It was my first time ever going to a MEC and wanted my snowboard wax for a ski trip in two days because it was conveniently close. As I give my snowboard in he said they would call me in the next 5 days but I explained I leave in two days so he said they will try to get it done in time. I called in and asked how much it would cost to get my board waxed he quoted me 40$ and I find out it's 50$ which was annoying but then I go to the front and they asked if I had a mec membership and I didn't have one considering I've never been so that was an extra 5$. Would have been nice to know before hand before spending that much. sooo when it comes to it I'll probably just go to totem which only cost me 30$ for a wax and I get it in a few hours. read more

MEC is my go to destination for anything related to the outdoors. I've been coming here for years and have always been satisfied with the quality of gear and wears available. Their rock solid guarantee is amazing and a huge reason why I continue to shop there. I don't ever have to worry that something I buy is going to malfunction or if it does I can easily return or exchange it. With their huge winter clearance sale going on I checked to see if any of my wish list items had been marked down. I went online to see what was available and sure enough the Monsoon jacket that I had been eyeing was on sale! The only trouble is that there was only 1 left in Canada in my size and it was in Vancouver. Online they offer an option where you can call the shop that has the item you want, order and pay for it, and they will ship it to your "home store" for free. I tested the service out on the jacket and I can honestly say it was the most pleasant, seamless and easy experience! Since you make your payment through a sales centre they charge you the amount you would pay in your own province meaning no additional sales tax! Awesome! The shipping took only a few days and they promptly emailed me to notify when it was available for pickup. I was a super happy camper when I finally got my amazing jacket, and at a great price! I dock 1 star for their sometimes hit or miss in store service. As some reviewers have pointed out- not everyone is as knowledgeable about the product in the department they are working in. When you know what you want, or are just browsing that's not too bad, but when you are looking for some solid advice it can suck when you can't find someone who knows what they are talking about. read more

I can't say enough good things about this store and why I end up coming here all the time! They have ALL you may need for your adventures: are you going hiking, canoeing, kayaking, biking, running, fishing, climbing? You can find all the gear you might need here and if you don't find it, the staff will tell you where to get it. Staff is impressively knowledgeable! One of the guys was giving an explanation about the hiking boots, he gave information about what type of grip, ankle protection, soles and other components you would need to check. The same applies for camping gear. You can buy an item and if you don't like it you can return it without problems (as long as it is not damaged). If you don't want to buy an item because you will only use it for a short period of time, they can rent it to you. I rented a 3-person tent, backpack, sleeping bag and sleeping pad for my backpacking trip and everything worked perfectly. You can book the gear, pick it up after 6:00pm and returning before 1:00pm and you'll only pay for the full day(s) you actually used it. Love the gear I get here. It is cheap and affordable, I don't need to break the bank to get a nice backpack or jacket. In addition to that, most of the merchandise here is tough and durable. I haven't bought some of the bigger things like kayaks or skiis (I go somewhere else to get winter sporting gear), but I'm sure it's pretty good! read more

The selection of sportswear and gear is amazing! Even those who don't lead active lifestyle may feel inspired after browsing Mountain Equipment's selection. I love the selection of bright colored insulated outerwear sold here. Jackets and vests are rather expensive but look stylish and provide both comfort and warmth. They are real investment pieces. I recommend you check out the brand called Patagonia - their fleece jackets and hoodies are practical and stylish enough to wear not only on ski slopes but in the city as well. Mountain Equipment Co-op. carries an amazing selection of hardcore looking skies and splitboards. Staff are extremely helpful, if you have questions about anything they know the answer or they will find it out for you. They aren't pushy when you are trying things on, they really do just want what's best for you, it's great! Store is big and has lots of parking around it which makes it easy to access. If you are an active person, a backpacker or a camper then this is the place for you to go to get your gear. They have camping stuff and if you like to go kayaking or canoeing they can set you up. If you are a climber they also have gear to get you going. The have huge backpacks that are good for mountain hiking or even backpacking around Europe (or somewhere else). They have thermo clothes and jackets to keep you warm while you hike or even while you go out for a run in the cold Edmonton temperatures. They have some great items to keep you all nice and warm (gloves, mittens, socks, etc). They also carry daypacks that are great for school life. I picked up a smaller backpack just to use for my laptop and some books and I love it. I don't need to carry too much stuff these days and that's why I love it so much. It's pretty durable; it travelled with me to Korea and Paris and then home again. If you are a biker they have bike bags also so you can pack up your bike if you are roaming around the city or the mountains. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable about the products they carry in the store. I believe you need a membership card to buy something and the card is about $15. The membership is lifetime and you only have to pay the $15 once. read more

This review is in regards to the bike service department. This was my first experience at MEC and came as a referral through my work. I took my bike, and wife's bike in for some tune ups/repairs. I called the store to see if it was appointment based or if we could just drop them off and they were great on the phone (if you've never been you can just take your bike in! No appointment necessary). I dropped the bikes off on Friday and they were ready on Sunday, which is fine. I was having a basic tuneup performed on my bike while my wife was just having both of her tires repaired. Over the weekend, we received a call saying that my wife's rear tire was not fixable and asked if we wanted to have both tires replaced so that the colours on the wheel would match! Once again, this was totally fine, I appreciated the phone call and told them "Yes, please change both tires that would be great". The underwhelming experience started when I picked the two bikes up. First, I go to pay. The bill was around 150 for a basic tune up and to fix the tires on my wife's bike. The first thing the guy tells me when I need to pay is that in order to receive any service of any kind on my bike, that I need to be a member. Well thanks for the heads up, I even informed the guys in the bike shop that it was my first time in a MEC store when I was there and wasn't sure how the processed work. So, I had to buy a membership. Then we get the bikes! My bike (the one with the basic tuneup) has been working great, no complaints with the performance. When I get my wife's bike back I'm stunned to find there are 2 different tires with a different coloured wheel well, one black, one white. So they didn't change the one tire even after calling me to confirm. Naturally I checked the invoice to ensure I wasn't charged for the tire. I wasn't, but I was charged for "2 flat repairs". I was pretty choked about this as one tire was totally replaced so I'm not sure how they can get away with charging for a service that didn't benefit me in anyway. Overall, I was very disappointed with the service that I received and likely will not be back here for bike servicing in the future. read more

I love shopping at MEC. Whether I'm looking for a new travel mug or a sleeping bag or camping gear, they've got it. I also come here for cheaper, but high-quality yoga wear. Lululemon has excellent clothing, but it's costly. At MEC, you can get athletic tops for a more reasonable price, and they carry the line Prana, which has some great yoga wear. The fabrics wick and are ultra-comfortable. The vibe at MEC is so healthy and outdoorsy. Staff are super-cool, and I bought a pair of yoga pants once that really didn't work well for me. I'd already washed and worn them once, but they still let me return them because I wasn't satisfied, and satisfaction is part of their customer policy. Another thing that's cool is they recycle clothes, so if your old MEC sweatshirt or vest doesn't fit anymore you can throw it into a recycling bin at the entrance, and it will go to others less fortunate. Whatever you're shopping for here, there's a knowledgeable staff person in the department ready to help. It can get a little busy in here on weekends or any day in the middle of the summer, so be prepared to wait a few moments to get your questions answered. Finally, you must be a coop member to shop there, but membership is really cheap, under $10. If you're an outdoorsy type, you likely already shop here, but if you're looking for athletic wear that's high quality at cheaper prices, try MEC. read more

Great store.. Membership is only $5 for lifetime worth every penny and more. Quality items and they stand 100% behind their product.. I have bought two winter coats there and they have lasted for years after many washings and much abuse.
