I'd read about this spot when it was featured in an article about the best burgers in London. This place is definitely outside of the central area of London, but well worth the travel since the food was incredible! What really intrigued me about the description of this place was that they offered all of what I like in a burger spot: burgers, fries/onion rings and shakes. They have a great menu of burger offerings with different toppings/flavors. I had the Truffle Shuffle and I was not disappointed...really good quality beef and made decadent by the richness of the bun, truffle and swiss cheese. The onion rings were good too. The milkshake was very good - I had the Chocolate Snickers Shake and I was not disappointed...it was rich, thick, creamy and not too sweet. There were some issues with the staff during our visit, but management accommodated us and really provided an experience that we'd come back to. Management did a great job of making us feel like customer service was very important to them. Their menu is great since they have turkey bacon instead of pork bacon, which is difficult to find in most burger spots. I'd definitely recommend this spot...I'm going back on my next trip over the pond! read more

Tooting Bec. Never been there and never had a reason to. Till Meat & Shake. Meat & Shake is a burger place that specialises in milkshake and burgers and delivers on both counts. Getting in at dinner is tough. I called to book a table and was told they didn't book tables as policy. I asked how long the wait would be to get a table if we just turned up and was told that it might be difficult to get a table that night, because a party of 30 had booked most of the place up (note: yes they did say they don't take bookings :/) and they only had 50 seats. I had my whaa? face on and said okay but we'd still be there. After all we don't turn down free shakes. Yes there was a voucher for free shakes that night. Anyway, we turn up and the place is super busy. We get there was are told to wait 20 mins or so. As we arrive, we were lucky as suddenly loads of people start arriving. By the time we're seated there's honestly about 20 more people just queuing outside, whilst inside is jam packed. Anyway, service is good and we order. Food comes promptly apart from the staff initially forgetting my shake, but it's worth the wait. The wings here are ginormous. Between wings, chicken burger and shake, I very nearly exploded and everything was utterly delicious. To make the experience even better, there were also many many types of hot sauce of varying degrees of heat, plus a bunch of tasty bbq sauces. My milkshake had giant pieces of chocolate brownie in it. Big enough not to go through the straw and dare I say it possibly better than Byron. (gasp). Also it can't get any better can it? Yes it can. As the place is Helal likely because of the area demographic, they do turkey bacon. So as well as being nicer than bacon (my opinion) you can argue it's healthier too! In all, I still can't think of any other reasons to visit Tooting Bec, other than perhaps the place has the BIGGEST Chicken Cottage I've ever seen in my life along with possibly the biggest KFC I've ever seen in my life. Went to this place last week and I must say that the burgers were fantastic! We tried the smokey bandit and pulled rib burgers between us and they were both cooked well. The rosemary fries were also great but felt like we should have ordered the devilled fries instead with all those toppings! Although the place itself wasn't very big the ambience was good and as you'd expect for a burger & shake place. All in all a must visit if your nearby (or even if you're not as was in our case!) A word of warning: I don't think the place is suitable for large groups (a previous reviewer seems to have had a problem as well) The queue seems to grow after 8 so if you arrive after than on a Friday / Saturday you should expect to wait a bit. read more

Too expensive, dreadfully inept Bespectacled Brummie manager and not enough range in the menu. We had chicken wings that were so over chillified they were inedible. Two other couples close by were suffering similarly; we complained but nothing was brought to compensate nor was the dish comped. No wifi available-the idiot manager said it was for staff only and only 6 shake flavours. They're charging West End prices but not offering service, quality or quantity to match. Tooting Bec's culinary fare is beginning to improve and I hoped Meat & Shake was a worthy addition. Judging by 2 visits now, Meat & Shake only aspires to disappoint. We won't be returning. read more

All the way in zone 3? Worth every bit of trouble going all the way to south for the most artisan and genuine ingredients burgers in town. Plus it's not that long of a walk from the station. Tooting's reputation has certainly been amped by the friendly 'jolly' London vibe with lots of quirky and hip cafes and pastry shops. But Meat and Shake will blow your expectations to the roof.first introduced by a friend. First of all, the venue is set on a great compact corner with the shape of a square. Easy to walk in and spot. Secondly, the interior of this place is spot on. With quirky industrial lamps hanging from pipe fencing, lighted letters and brass details and of course, the konjac leather seating, that give the 'standard' American diner a more rustic and contemporary feeling. We decided to order the smoking bandit and truffle shuffle, accompanied with some dirty fries. The burgers were amazing. My truffle shuffle burger was just spot-on. The melted cheese, delicate truffle oil and mushroom accompanied with a perfectly cooked patty was just the best combination. My partner's smoking bandit had an amazing smoked after flavor with the bacon. Our Dirty fries were some cheesy fries with chili, minced meat mayo and lots of sliced chillies on top. Alongside with the fantastic food, their extended selection of milkshakes that are thick with fresh and authentic ingredients are to die for. During my first visit, I opted for the cinnamon and fig one. This time I decided to try the mango and coconut one. I could taste that they used real mango and coconut. Plus they are suer thick and if you're a bit sensitive to some of the spicy sauces, it's a good relief for you. The best sauce they have there is the one garnished with herbs. After these burgers, hot sauce, plentiful fries and the thick milkshakes, you won't even be tempted to ask for dessert. Super friendly, quirky and professional staff. Also the burgers are served in glass cases, which makes it a perfect paradise for foodie instagrammers and snapchat fanatics. Between £7.50-£10 for a burger without fries, £3 for fries. Expensive burger in my opinion, especially for the local demographic. But they were really good according to my friends! I opted for the also expensive chicken wings (£8.90 for 6) but have to say wow. They were really meaty, with great sauce. I opted for the Lafayette BBQ wings. Super messy to eat because of the sauce (so don't order these on a date!). Both the seasoned fries and sweet potato fries were amazing. So I guess I was peeved at paying Central London prices in Tooting Bec but the food WAS really good. On par with Byron I'd say! read more

Came from my National insurance appointment and wasn't sure where to eat. Yelped this place and decided to try and get a taste of a real "American" style burger that is made to order the way you want! Got the truffle shuffle medium rare, and it was wonderful. I also got the sweet potato fries and they were cooked to perfection. The shake is good as well. I would definitely come back. Came here twice when I was visiting London, and I gotta say it was fantastic! The best milkshake I've ever had, and absolutely fantastic burgers. I had the plain jane and on the other occasion the pepe le pew- both mouthwatering and delicious. My friends had the truffle burger and the ribs and they too were incredible. The ambiance is wonderful and the staff are fun and very helpful. I definitely recommend this spot! read more

I had one of the best milkshakes ever in Meat & Shake, peanut butter, banana & brownie. It had large pieces of brownie at the bottom which tasted so gooey & delicious. Although a Burger place, I opted for the hot dog on this visit. The sautéed onions were so soft and buttery. I did however make a little mess eating it, although this is due to the size & extras you get which is a compliment not a criticism. We went on a Wednesday afternoon so wasn't too busy and the waitress was able to deliver great service and was close by when we needed her. Great little restaurant! read more

Maybe it was my bad luck, but the afternoon that I visited Meat & Shake in Tooting, they were having toilet problems. Here's what happened: Some time after placing my order, I became aware of a foul aroma at the periphery of my olfactory senses. Thinking it was all in my mind, I rubbed my nose and continued my conversation. After several minutes, my dining companions asked whether I could smell "something." How do I describe it? A cross between rotten meat and the blocked loo of a 747. I tried to get the attention of the mutton-dressed-as-lamb waitress, but she was too busy flirting with the handsome South African doctor two tables in front. It was then that I noticed... On my left, the toilet door was opened, and I was treated to the mouth-dessicating vista of a workman hunched over the toilet bowl. His hairy bum-cleavage was bad enough, but the clouds of noxious toilet-gas was really putting me off eating. When Senora Waitress had tired of her simpering (or most likely, the doctor found his gherkins more appealing than her cleavage,) I complained about the smell, and asked politely for something to be done about it. Upon her vacant look, I suggested asking the workman to close the toilet door. Here's her response: "But ze plommber eez only avaylabble now. Eet eez no ma folt." Be that as it may, the smell was making me lose my appetite. By now, what must have been our plates were waiting on the counter for her to serve them. I suggested she pack the food, as I'd rather eat my meal at the bus stop (as exhaust fumes were marginally preferable to sewage clouds.) No matter what I suggested, the waitress refused to budge. When I told her I would leave, she threatened to call the police. My companions decided to stay, and since I had promised to treat them on that day, I grudgingly sat down and choked down my cheeseburger. I can't really say whether or not the food was good, as the meal was cold and my tastebuds were skewed by the smell of the restaurant. The chef was efficient and produced good-looking burgers and fries, but the waitress lacked the focus and professionalism to do her job. It's really sad that what could have been a fun and delicous dining experience was ruined by the company not scheduling plumbers while the restaurant was closed, and a waitress who seemed more interested in making lame excuses and getting a boyfriend than in serving burgers. read more

No one seems to have mentioned the food so far in these reviews...in short highly priced very average burgers starting at about 7 quid for a cheese burger and that's before sides etc. it was £20 just for me for a burger(smokey at almost a tenner-definitely not worth it-despite what they say about the meat source is was a big disappointment) gherkins, fries and a shake. £2 for what was probably one large pickle sliced up was pretty eye watering too. The shakes are good but they should be for a fiver! I was really disappointed as was glad to see something different open up my area and it's seemed to be busy but am guessing its people trying it out not to return. I've had better burgers at a the draft house on northcote road and this place just seems to be a Byron wannabe without delivering on the experience. Byron is also better. Service was fine (it wasn't overly busy)- seems they have ironed out whatever issues they had before- they need to sort out their music playlist - I think I heard Sinatra come fly with me about 3 times in the 30 odd mins we were there. kept driving past this place for ages until this evening with my plus one. But once the waitress took our order it was all downhill from there!! We got our drinks in no time at all but waiting for the food was horrendous to the least. A good 20 minutes and nothing. Within these minutes a group of 4 arrived and moments later they had their drinks order and food while I was still. So I call the waitress to find was going and she didnt know either so I then approached to be told they were really busy and couldnt explain why but admittedly knew I didnt have my food?? Im extremely disappointed at the level of service I recieved and the inexcusable brush off I was given as if I was your everyday Dilettante. I went there for the second time as my friend wanted to try something new in Tooting. The first time I was genuinely not impressed. £11 for a burger with no sides and no drink that was at best a quarter pounder drenched in a lot of BBQ sauce. The service is decent however and credit where due. The food is on your table rather swiftly and the staff are equipped with a handy tablet that places your order. On my most recent visit I ordered 6 Wings off the "Other Main" menu and received 6 buffalo wings in 2 mini buckets. The wings were drenched in BBQ sauce once more and the flavour was hidden with the amount of sauce. It was sweet. The wings were reminiscent of £2.99 wings you buy from a chicken shop that is drenched in sauce. The restaurant should really not be charging Central London prices in an area which is not exactly full of footballers and WAGS. The owner is usually hovering around tables and was engaged in a heated discussion with a customer who had reserved a table and her friends were 10 minutes late.
