For months he promised to file contempt and civil actions to get monetary value for my property. First it was he didnt want to file because our home was for sale and didnt want to "stir up a hornets nest" because i needed her signature to close the home as the market was plummeting. She filed frivolous motion after motion and emails pro se burning through thousands of my money and he couldnt even best a half wit at hearings. When house finally closed i demanded he file now after 4 months of burning through 9k in my money never recovering any of my property. Even after the sale he came up with excuse after excuse as to why he hadnt filed. He finally sent a demand letter in mid Jan giving her 10 days to pay or suit was finally being filed. 2 weeks after deadline i asked when suit was being filed and just after he asked for yet another 4k for my trust he sent me a letter stating he was dropping me as a client. So he billed me thousands for paperwork and demand letters after asking me to get my missing property from the 80k mark down to 35k so he could file in magistrate in order to recover attorneys fees. Weeks of prep and attorneys fees for a demand letter never filed. Only 2 times we appeared at hearings he was late both times. First time the judge was caught in the same accident traffic so he got a pass from the judge. Second time the judge was on time and kept pushing my hearing because he still wasnt there until the very last case of the hour. I dont care how much traffic there is Meridian to Caldwell isnt a 200 mile commute as a professional you should leave earlier. ******This review was edited after Mr Shepherd sent me a threatening email to sue a 100% disabled vet who is actually going in for spinal procedures at the hospital in 2 hours which further stresses a person who he was hired to protect. To answer his what i believe untruthful response because this is what he will do when he represents you. He states i "wanted to litigate against his advice". He was the one who stated i had a strong case for liquidation of my property to herself for pennies on the dollar. He wanted me to get it into magistrate court and have the emails stating such so i followed his "expert" opinion and got my actual damages down from 80k to 35k as he suggested. At no time did he tell me to not to litigate any further and anyone who wants to view the emails to that fact is free to see them showing i did everything he asked to sue for damages. He took my case to litigate and shouldnt have if he truly advised against it. As for all the other nonsense i couldve done everything else pro se and paid nothing. For anyone reading these reviews watch how he attacks the poster in all of them that is what our experience was behind closed doors was even worse for us in our opinion.

I hired Joe Frick Law Firm (David Bartels) for a divorce and custody matter and do not recommend…read morethem for custody cases. I was new to this process and relied on the firm to manage urgent deadlines and a child‑safety situation. Early on I was told I would consult with an assistant and this is normal for all law firms (which I accepted, due to limited time to reply to the divorce petition), but later learned that most lawyers do the consults their selves-the first inconsistency. I requested a specific lawyer and was told the firm assigns attorneys; I accepted because I had only two weeks to respond to my spouse's proposal. At an in‑person meeting I provided all documents, paystubs, journals, and evidence for mandatory disclosures. David said he would handle the submissions and didn't need copied of the documents I had, but I left him with copies I had previously prepared. About a month later the assistant emailed saying the documents had not been submitted and the deadline was approaching. I resubmitted the forms and followed up after the deadline; the firm gave a vague response and I later discovered the filing had been missed. When an open CPS matter arose involving my coparent and concerns for my child's safety, I told the firm it was urgent. They repeatedly said they would get back to me; three days later I still had no substantive response. When I emphasized the urgency, my lawyer emailed instructing me not to disclose that information to his assistant because it made her nervous. At an ex parte hearing my lawyer arrived minutes before court, had not submitted the evidence I provided, and was unprepared. I had to write notes for him to read during the hearing because he had not filed the response or evidence I supplied and apparently had no idea how to respondto my opponents attorney. The opposing counsel arrived early and had time to speak with the other party; my lawyer's late arrival and lack of preparation reflected poorly in court. On top of that, my ex was dressed better than my lawyer. I know it probably doesn't matter to the judge, but let me tell you, I was embarrassed. But later learned, my new attorney identified at least four missed deadlines that my original lawyer never disclosed. I have since retained new counsel to correct the issues and protect my child and my case. Now Joe Frick Law Firm is demanding $4,000 for work they claim was prepared but never submitted and that I have never seen. Get everything in writing, request proof of filing, and consider other counsel for custody or child‑safety matters. If you care about your children's safety and timely, competent representation, look elsewhere.

During one of the most difficult and vulnerable times of my life, they took my money, lied about how much things were going to cost, and completely failed to help me in any meaningful way. I trusted them when I was already under extreme stress, and instead of support, I felt used and taken advantage of. What I was told upfront about fees did not match what actually happened, and once they had my money, their concern for me disappeared. Communication was terrible, questions went unanswered, and I was left feeling helpless and overwhelmed. This firm added more pain to an already painful situation. They did not fight for me, they did not guide me, and they did not act in my best interest. I felt like nothing more than a transaction to them. I would strongly warn anyone considering Joe Frick Law to stay far away. Do not make the mistake I did. There are other lawyers in the Boise area who actually care about their clients--this is not one of them.

Long story short, I made an appointment for a consultation, figuring I couldn't qualify but maybe they could recommend another option. The attorney Janine, completely put our fears to rest. We qualified despite the issues that I thought would disqualify us. It wasn't a stress free process by any means but the attorney and the paralegals guided us every step of the way and helped us understand what to expect each step of the process. My only additional advice would be, to do the steps as quick as you can. There's lots of info they need and the longer it takes you to get it all gathered, the longer it drags out.
