Charlotte takes dogs from shelters other rescues won't. She has such a huge heart. She has many adoptable dogs that would make excellent pets! My friends and I love visiting and spending the me with all the pups.

We've been a big fan of Woods Humane Society for a long time. We adopted our first dog together…read morefrom Woods about 15 years ago and they were great. Then we adopted a cat from them, their cat room is amazing. So nice to get out there and be able to actively interact with multiple cats and meet one that fits you. We now have adopted another dog from them. It is great that they keep getting animals from other shelters and adopting them out. Our new dog had some stomach issues, but everything was clearly disclosed on the records and they send you home with everything you could need. The free vet check is a really nice plus. We look forward to joining the classes for our new dog once she is fully healthy and cleared to go. We enjoy supporting them through donations as well because they do such a great job.

I adopted Elaina (Jack Russell/Chihuahua) on February 9, 2026…read more I was told that there was no history on her. I'm pretty sure she was abused probably by a man because she's scared to death of my son. She's still skittish with me sometimes. The collar and harness she came with were too loose and she escaped five minutes after I got home. She ran up on the freeway. Luckily, a kind driver managed to catch her and returned her to Woods. I thought I would never see her again. She was lucky she didn't get run over and I'm lucky to have her back. I bought an escape proof harness and put a different collar on her which I made sure was snug enough to not slip over her head. I almost brought her back, thinking she would never warm up to me, but I'm glad I didn't. She scared to death of a leash or anything like the collar and harness. She finally warmed up to our other dog and they play all the time. She is very playful with me when she's not scared. It just takes a lot of patience when a dog like this. Woods must have known she was an escape risk because at Woods carried her out to my vehicle. Any other time I have gotten a dog from the shelter, I always took the dog out the door and to my vehicle. I just wish they could have warned me. It almost caused her to get killed on the freeway.

She also helped me save the lives of 3 street cats I had brought in who were in desperate need of placement and attention. She facilitated all of this like a complete champ and pro. This woman and place are true advocates for animals and their rights and wellness. I would trust this place with any poor, abandoned animal I've come across... the animal would be lucky to land here in the care of SLO animal services. I can't thank this team enough for their help with these sweet cats and for giving them a chance at a real shot at life. The intake was seamless and easy on the cats, thanks to Annette and just wanted to personally say thank you to her and the staff here. You're making a major difference. Thank you

There are state of the art kennels for all kinds of animals there at the facility. We recently adopted a cat and it was awesome playing in one of the two "cat rooms." There are no odors, like their last building, everything is brand new and situated in a way that puts less stress on the animals. We saw two cats we loved, could only keep one, so we paid for the adoption fees so someone could come in and pick her up. They'll tell you if an animal has had it's fees waived. We walked outside and although the dogs were loud and a little stressed, the kennels were situated so we could observe from a distance. There was a tortoise there when we visited, very tempted to adopt. It's been months with Mary and couldn't be happier. A

I submitted an online application asking for a smaller dog and my preference for a poodle mix. They responded within a couple of days, as I recall, and asked a few more questions. After a few days, they contacted me with a possible match, explaining he was a senior poodle mix with a few medical issues. They work closely with Hitchcock Animal Services (county shelter) and had several dogs that had issues and needed a rescue with a strong foster program. They brought "Bernie" over, and I became a foster mom with full support from AFRP. They provided guidance and everything from beds/blankets to toys and even food! They provided the vet services to help Bernie be the best dog he could be. They invited me to various events (and even a TV spot!) to show off Bernie but unfortunately dogs with medical issues can be a little harder to get adopted. So after six months, I fell in love and became a "foster win" and adopted him. To this day, AFRP considers me part of their alumni family and invites me to activities such as local parades or fun events. They have a variety of dogs and cats, young to old, healthy to some having medical challenges, and work hand-in-hand with several shelters to help find fosters and ultimately final homes! I found their offices to be clean and functional, although if they were bigger, they could help more animals. I use Yelp frequently and know I make decisions based on reviews. I wanted to provide a positive and more recent outcome than some older comments which I feel are no longer applicable. The last note I will make is that as of 2024, they have new executive and support staff who are fantastic. So please consider discovering this great local rescue organization. AFRP have been around for a while but today, I find they are an excellent organization always improving on their processes and staff. So please GO FOSTER! It's fun, rewarding, and inexpensive. You get lots of love in return.
