This company used to be great, I have spent thousands with them. They have installed my furnace, a/c, water heater, pipes and a much of copper gas lines. Now they are unreliable, over priced and offer horrible customer service. They push their monthly service agreement, contact you on autodialers to schedule with them only to have them cancel you day of even when scheduled months in advance. They expect you to accept an 8 hour time span for them to show up-not realistic for working people. Their schedule team does not have a direct line to their dispatch team so all you can do is leave a voicemail and hope you get a call back. My most recent appointment was supposed to be a furnace inspection. I was actually given a morning appointment only to have them again push it out to early afternoon. I hadn't heard from them by 2:25 and messages were not returned. I had finally got a text the rep was on the way instead of call back to be able to reschedule. The rep showed up at 2:30 and I explained I had a hard stop at 3:25. The rep came back 20 minutes later saying it was done. The form had nothing checked off, no information on it. The issue I asked him to check was just "it worked for me". I am still waiting to hear back from a manager on this issue. I have referred this company to so many people and now would say go with anyone else. It is sad how much they changed and how much their customers matter. read more

I had a clogged kitchen sink. The service person tried to snake it but told me he could not and guarantee that it would be sufficient. He finally pressure cleaned it at a cost of over $1500. A search of the internet shows that a price between $350 and 600 is typical. I feel like he took advantage of an older customer but he won't get a second shot. I will never call them again nor will I recommend them to anyone who asks. The drain has stayed clear but that is better explained by my community's organic recycling program that allows me to seldom used my food disposer. read more

McQuillan installed our mini splits several years ago. We called recently to ask for them to be serviced with just an annual cleaning. They were quite difficult and perhaps I should've taken that as a sign of what was to come. They refused to provide a quote for several weeks until yesterday when they called us to confirm today's appointment. My husband asked if they could provide a quote for the cleaning finally. The person on the phone quoted us $29 per unit for a standard cleaning and confirmed the time they would be here today. Then when he showed up he started by asking me what I had been told in terms of pricing and when I told him he responded that "it's OK" that I had been misinformed but that actually it was $400 per unit for a service cleaning. Then complained that no one had answered the phone when he had tried earlier today, despite the fact that we had spoken to someone from his office to confirm today's appointment less than 24 hours ago. I had to tell him it was none of his business that my husband is a teacher and can't answer last minute calls because he was complaining about no one picking up so much. And then he said it would not be completed today. I said absolutely not, and had to ask him TWICE to leave my house. read more

Then they said they sent the text in error. Then I got a text at 1:20 saying a tech was right around the corner. He showed up at 2:10. At no time did anyone apologize or try to speak nicely to me. The office person, James/Jamie actually laughed at me, was rude, and condescending. When the tech arrived he had the same attitude. Thought it was no big deal that I had taken off work because they were late. His attitude was even worse. These guys are scammers judging from the reviews, and I wouldn't use them if they were free. I have not used McQuillan Home Services, but I did have an encounter with 2 of their executives after one of their employees clipped my car on a busy street then fled the scene. The hit to my car was as jarring as hitting a large pothole. Luckily, the passenger with me wrote down the license plate number and was a witness to the event. I took my car to a body shop, had the damage assessed, then I determined to just have it buffed out. I relayed that to the head of operations and the finance guy, via a conference call. The McQuillan execs agreed with the assessment, they said that they wanted to make it right, but 6 months later and counting, I still don't know what that is. I very seldom write negative reviews; I like giving good companies credit for quality service, and I figure the bad stuff will catch up to the others anyway. So this is a rare exception. Before I contacted McQuillan I saw the reviews on the their website, and out of so many only 272 are negative. I sometimes think maybe those are just grumpy people who can't be satisfied and they just like to complain. But now that I have had McQuillan come out to replace a florescent light fixture over my kitchen counter, I see what those customers are upset about. In particular, those remarking about costs and unnecessary work. As I say, I almost never post a critical review, but I'm posting this to caution others to be vigilant regarding the cost, and especially the availability of options. Also, be wary of a $69 offer just to assess the problem. Most important, try not to get intimidated and confused by the technical explanation; I found out afterwards that I paid almost $1,000 for something I didn't need, didn't want and don't even like, all because I believed I had to have it, - about $750 more than it should have cost. I don't claim McQuillan is a dishonest company. I understand the common business practice of "up selling" after they get inside your home, but my experience felt predatory. And I also felt a contentious attitude when I contacted the Service Manager: "You signed the agreement." The only positive is the Scheduler and the Electrician were very nice, professional people, and the appointment itself went smoothly. I hired McQuillan for a simple drain clear in my kitchen. The tech scoped the drain, took 20 min to clear drain, cautioned that if it was further down the line might cost over $800. I paid close to $400. I got scammed. I left a complaint with customer service, they called back and said their prices were competitive and would do nothing to remedy. Sent out a plumber to replace a dead sump pump battery. 10 minute job at most. My specific request was for a battery replacement. When the plumber arrived, he looked at the battery, didn't test it, said, "I can't carry everything in my truck," after I had specifically requested a new battery. He left, came back 50 minutes later, changed the battery in 10 minutes. Then hung around bullish*tting about all the money he made picking, etc. and showing off his cash. He ran the clock out on both sides of the job, and charged me $753, SPITTING DISTANCE of $1,000, then gave me $100 off. I called McQuilliam asking for a breakdown of the cost of the battery and time spent. All I got was the extremely rude manager Josh who kept talking over me, and when I raised my voice, he criticized me for raising my voice. Josh refused to tell me the cost of the battery, and refused to disclose the labor cost. Absolute refusal to do a breakdown of the cost. All very unprofessional, and extremely RUDE. I wish I had read reviews of McQuillam before contacting them. IMO charging two hours for a 10 minute job, and running out the clock on both ends is extremely unprofessional. The manager claimed I was given 5 options of fixing, what? the dead battery? I never received anything of the sort, and I never signed off on any options, because I was never given any options. All that was needed was a dead battery replaced. From my experience, beware of McQuilliam. One star is too much for this company. I see now how VERY LOW McQuilliam's ratings are. Wow. They deserve -0 stars. IMO this company, McQuillan, engages in predatory practices. They should be ashamed of themselves that the only way they think they can make money is to run out clocks. SAD! Yesterday, they inspected a problematic water softener they installed three years ago Afterwards the water became cloudy, and today they promised to be out between 8 - 4, in other words sometime to check it out. That's not a good buisness model. Set up an appointment for a Friday between 8 and noon for a foul sewer smell we are having in the house. At 11:45, I called them as I hadn't heard from anyone. Reception forwarded me to "dispatch" two different times (as I didn't get anyone the first or SECOND time I called). At 12:45 I called a THIRD time. I explained the situation to the receptionist, and she verbally spoke to dispatch who then picked up my forwarded call. "James" called me within five minutes, apparently he was the service person. He explained that I was at the bottom of the priority list because he had other homes without water. Hmm... apparently they set up appointments but then don't come? At any rate, he said he'd call me back later to let me know of an ETA or reschedule. At 2:30 he called to tell me he had to reschedule. Surprisingly, I declined and found another service group. A deceptive company in every way. Ali the boiler tech was 5 hours late and was rude, condescending and actually touched me inappropriately. I asked him to leave and he wouldnt go out the door. He called me a racist since he is Arabic. His fists were bunched, I thought he would punch me. When he went out the door, he would not leave the property until I threatened to call the police. I loved our plumber, but it cost $800 to snake two drains which are backi g up again after less then a month. Smaller companies warned me about the price gouging and unreliable service, but they got me with their fun-loving ads. Turns out, their rep isnt good. Next was the one week lag time for a reschedule because there were no openings. Needless to say, they don't have a customer focus, and this really is the fault of management for letting this terrible customer service happen. They did not send their A team to install a new boiler. The workers damaged a living room ceiling and kitchen with water damage from a radiator upstairs they must have drained. They damaged a beautiful wood floor in the same upstairs unit. . They actually forgot to turn on the new boiler when they left and so it was freezing the next morning. When I called that morning the scheduler told could come out in a few days. I went ballistic as it was winter and freezing and I just spent 18K on the new boiler the day before. Eventually someone with authority used common sense and sent someone out the same morning. The young man who arrived after asking me if I had turned the boiler off admitted that this should never have happened. The repair people who restored my ceilings were very professional. I would never ever under any circumstances use this company again. Run!! read more

The tech lied and told me that I needed a new AC system and that my boiler had a gas leak. All untrue and confirmed by the gas company and a reputable plumber/HVAC professional. Thier game is to tell the consumer is that their appliances are broken or otherwise unrepairable and sell them something new for a large price tag. I made an appointment with this company today 9/19/2024. A guy named Lucas came over on time. The purpose of the appointment was for McQuillan to give me an estimate for changing my 50-gallon gas water heater. I asked them to quote me the price for the cheapest water heater which I had seen sold in Menards for $ 500 and in Home Depot for $ 600. The guy came over, charged me $ 69.00 for his visit and his estimate for changing the water heater was$ 13,999 which I found outrageous and asked him to leave the house. read more

They are not an honest or ethical company. Sadly, they overcharged me $4K for a small leak in my pipe. They started by charging $1100 to find the leak. They put 3 unnecessary holes in my wall and could only point it out from several feet away. Then, they said its a level 3 leak and very complex requiring 4 hours of work with 2 guys for $2800. The next day 2 guys showed up and joked how easy a job it was and it took them 30 minutes to complete the job. Part of the $2800 was $570 for 2 elbows and a 1 foot section of pipe. I had McQuillan come out for an annual check on my boiler system (new in 2011). The tech quickly stated that my flue was reading over 500ppm of CO (I never saw the readings). He said there was no chance of repair and that the only solution would be to turn the heat off immediately and to send a salesman out to quote me for a new boiler. This tech made multiple appeals to the safety of my family and essentially used these scare tactics to believe I needed a new boiler. I had multiple CO alarms in the boiler room that had not gone off. Quote for a standard efficiency boiler came out to over $14,000! I made a few calls and quickly determined that this pricing was several thousand higher than it should be. Thankfully, I decided to have a second opinion come in for a new boiler quote. When that second company came in, he said that I absolutely didn't need a new boiler. Instead he recommended that a tech come out and do a proper check and maintenance. When the second tech came, he not only confirmed that I didn't need a new boiler, but also showed me that the flue was actually only reading 20ppm (totally normal). He confirmed to me that his measuring equipment had just been sent in for calibration in the last two weeks as well. He did clean and make some minor adjustments to get the reading down to 6ppm of CO. All of that to say, I do not trust McQuillan nor their ridiculous pricing. Do not be enticed by their $69 check up as they will use it as an opportunity to scare you into buying something completely unnecessary for much much more. read more

I hate to say it. You DON'T want these guys at your house! They are very deceptive with their pricing. They won't give you a ball park price on the phone. The only way to get any price information is if they "send someone out." They know once they get there they can rope you into paying whatever they say. Even if you do have someone come out get to get a quote if you say you want to call around they will charge you a 69 dollar charge just for coming out. I would advise anyone considering this company that despite their 4.7 rating, shop around. I have a daughter, son-in-law and an 18-month-old granddaughter living in a house I own, and my water heater went out during subzero temps. I had just passed a billboard with McQuillan Ad that morning and advised my son-in-law to call. The tech was out same day and quoted prices that seemed high but given time constraint running my own business, went ahead and approved project. BIG MISTAKE. Ended up costing me twice the amount a local plumbing firm, with a higher google star rating, would have charged ( learned this after the fact). All for same day service pricing model in non-emergency job. One example, they would not do project unless they replaced a 20ft PVC pipe that was installed at time house built 15 years ago but no longer up to code. You can buy this pipe at Home Depot for $1.10/ ft, or about $22 toal and I was charged $1074!! Not a typo, $ 1074 for a $22 dollar part!! That is insane. At end of day my bad for not shopping around but I had no idea this type of price gouging still existed. Shop, shop, shop. Don't make same mistake I did!!!!!!!!! read more

I needed two boilers inspected and certified in my duplex, and after calling for a few quotes, they were the cheapest by far. During the inspection, there was a piece that was broken, and they had the part on them and were able to fix it right away. We didn't need to make a second appointment or deal with any hassle. Want $69 to have a home visit. I asked for a quote over the phone for a removal and install of a basic toilet. Wouldn't tell me any prices over the phone because "each service call is specialized to the visit". It's a basic toilet install. They do thousands of them. Nothing rocket science about it. Toilet broke and would't flush from the tank on Thursday. Called and made appointment for Friday. Gave me a 8 hour window of arrival. 4pm rolls around and kid tells me he can't make it. Rescheduled for Tuesday 8am. Had to call cuz 8am rolls around and the kid is not there. Arrived 40 minutes late. Tells me they don't sell one piece toilets. Need to order something from their catalog. Shows me a basic white standard height, elongated, 2-piece toilet for $1000+. I can get one from Menards for $150-250 plus the extra parts I need. I was absolutely shocked a toilet is going to cost me over a grand from them. I was expecting maybe $100 an hour for 2 hours most for removal and install of a toilet. So no where near the $1000+ quote. I have to find a handy man or mom and pop shop plumber cuz this place is GOUGING people for their services. Now i understand why they have the money to advertise on television every 20 minutes. Skip this place or any place that wants money just to give you a quote. I may have to install the toilet myself. My daughter is a single mother who had her gas furnace go out the other day. I checked the furnace and deduced the Igniter was bad. I have a bad back so my daughter called McQuillan Brothers to come out and verify it was the igniter and what the cost would be. Well, the two young service guys that came out told her, besides the igniter being bad the furnace needed additional parts, a cleaning (which to me was questionable) and that there was "an oil leak" needing repair. There is no such thing as an oil leak in a gas furnace. Bottom line they said the cost would be over $1500 They then tried talking her into a new furnace for over $3500. . She said she could not afford that and the service guy said we have low interest loans available. My daughter called me right away and I told her I would fix it, which I did for less than $75ny purchasing the igniter from Dey Appliance Parts!. I posted this on the web site Neighbors to alert others of this deception. Folks get 2-3 other companies quotes; and for Gods sake if you have a single daughter or mother tell them never call McQuinllan Brothers for ANY repairs. read more

DO NOT HIRE THEM We used McQuillan about 10 years ago and they were great. Just had them out to replace a wax ring that had caused a leak with one toilet. They charged almost $600 to replace it. The tech was awful (Conor) and spent 1/2 hour writing up 3 estimates and just tried to upsell everything. It was a simple repair that should cost $200 max. Then the same toilet suddenly started running intermittently immediately after the repair. I called to have them recheck and they tried to have an 8 hour window which I objected to so they narrowed it to 4 hours. Then was suppose to get a 30 min call before they came. Had to call 3 times and tech finally showed up an hour after the window. Luckily he was a better tech (I refused to have Conor come back) but said issue was the flapper and charged $250 to repair it! Not his fault and he said original tech should've resolved that when he was out. At least he repaired it but almost $900 for very minor repairs. DO NOT USE this company. I called for a simple problem having to do with pilot light, after almost 5 hours and nearly $2000 the issue had still not been resolved and the next step was going to cost another $1K!!! Absolutely ridiculous, I showed him the door, did my own research and found the issue was with a faulty sensor. The fix was to remove the sensor and problem solved, all in less than an hour. They overcharge for parts and charge u for time spent taking notes and looking at things that are completely unrelated to the issue you are having and will keep pushing you to buy entirely new from them. McQuillan Bros is a business that has expanded way too quickly and cannot support its entire business. They offer an annual subscription for a maintenance program, but we found that they could not honor the agreements for actually coming out to provide the included maintenance checkups. They had to reschedule our HVAC maintenance/inspection twice, once in the fall, but then again in late December (when they said they could fit us in) due to not having enough people to cover the no-heat service calls. Basically, they don't have separate techs to cover both the urgent calls and regular scheduled business calls. To make matters worse, when we expressed concern about the program and how they could not support it, they said they would take a technician off of a no heat call (in a very guilt trippy tone..."So, we moved a technician off of a call for a family without heat to satisfy your appointment") - we immediately asked to cancel the service call and to cancel the subscription, asking to be prorated for the services they could not deliver on. Instead, they said they don't prorate and it was our problem for canceling. Do not go with this company. It's overpriced (they recently moved to a new charge sheet that is pretty crazy, double other companies) and not worth the slick new vans and TV commercials. read more

I had a quote from another plumber to install a new water softening system in our home. This is a system I purchased myself. All that I wanted was a plumber to install it. Recently, we did the same for my 81-year-old mother. Her installation was $350 from a plumber. I have a quote from another plumber in town for $425. McQuillan provided a quote of $1550 for this installation. I told them that was outrageous, and they had no explanation for why they are 4-5x as expensive as others. We noticed our air conditioner was not blowing out cold air so so we contacted Mcquillin Bros. They informed us a technician would be out the following day between 8 AM and 4 PM. I left my ringer on and sure enough I got a phone call 8:10am the next morning the tech was "on his way" now I normally sleep in before work, but I got up, got dressed, and headed upstairs only to get a text message telling me my technician would now be delayed. So I waited and waited and waited and I finally called, got put on hold, got a voicemail, left a message and then was finally called back at 10:40 The technician finally showed up a little while later, a very nice young man who informed me there was a leak and my coolant had leaked out. He gave me options ranging from $1500 to almost $4000 And of course the obligatory program for a $144 a year that will save me 10%. Once again I don't blame the young technician hes a nice guy he knew what he was doing, his bosses wanted to upell I'm sure. I paid the diagnostic fee and told him we would let him know. I called this company for service after seeing their ads on TV and thought I would give them a try. We scheduled a day for later in the week & I rearranged my work schedule to be home that entire day. The day before they sent a text message to confirm I needed to be there between 8 AM and 4 PM, which I did promptly confirm. On the morning of the appointment, their dispatcher called me at 7:26AM while I was in the shower so unable to take the call. I called back at 7:44AM but they had already sent the technician somewhere else. The dispatcher told me they couldn't guarantee they could get anyone out that day any longer...really??? This company doesn't give you any kind of reasonable arrival window, as most contractors do. They don't give you any heads up the night before on a specific timeframe. I wouldn't waste your time hiring this company unless you have oodles of time to sit at home waiting for their arrival. They obviously don't value their customer's time! I rearranged my whole work schedule to be there the whole day and then they drop the ball. When I expressed my disappointment with the dispatcher on the phone she was unapologetic and didn't seem to care. After I got off the phone, I called another company who scheduled an actual 2-hr arrival window for the same day. What a mistake to even try McQuillan...GO ELSEWHERE for service!! read more
