I called the rescue squad. They were wonderful. Got to the hospital, there was a girl in my room that didn't acknowledge me, didn't introduce herself, I don't even know who or what position she held. She only spoke to me when I asked a question. She then just left and I was alone in my room for about 20 minutes. The nurse practitioner, Aileen, told me I had a pinched nerve. There was no testing of any kind. No X-ray, no MRI, she didn't even bother physically looking at me. She said I have a pinched nerve and I was free to go. She gave me prednisone. She also told me she was referring me to ortho, and gave me papers with their info on it. It was all wrong. Wrong address, wrong doctor - she didn't refer me at all. And the doctor? A HAND surgeon. I went to the proper orthopedic doctor at OrthoSC. Had X-rays and an MRI. I actually have one slipped disk and one ruptured disk. And the nerve is pinched in two places. I have to contemplate a shot vs surgery, which would happen anyway if the shot doesn't help. I was not taken seriously at the ER, I was dismissed with no proper care or testing. And I was incorrectly diagnosed. I'm disgusted. This is not how you should treat patients. It totally discolored the good experiences I've had. And I should thank them for the extra pain time because you know, it is "just" a pinched nerve. I'm angry.

I came in requesting a simple strep test for my 3 year old. Instead, without a doctor seeing us first three other tests were run, one of which I was never notified about (RSV). The other tests cost $300. I had already spoken with my pediatrician who told us just get a strep test, I told this to the person taking the vitals before we saw a dr. They ran tests without my consent that cost hundreds of unnecessary dollars. This felt like they were just trying to run up whatever tests they could think of without communicating cost to me or need and ran a test they did not speak to me about beforehand to make money. The doctor was kind. Spent 60 seconds confirming my child has strep. Which I already knew from sending my doctor pictures and videos. This visit cost $500. The office manager was very difficult and refused to work with us or understand our side of the story and demanded payment immediately. This was the worst urgent care experience I've ever had. I know there is another urgent care in the area called Doctors Care - I should have gone there. Make sure you ask questions about the cost and what is truly necessary so they can't take advantage of you by making you pay for them for unnecessary tests.

MEDICAL BILLING FRAUD…read more Charged $388 for a standard annual well-woman exam that should've been free. I had to pay $388 out-of-pocket to avoid the bill (that I should never have received) going to collections. MUSC said I should be reimbursed eventually, but over a month has gone by. According to my health insurance company, MUSC has not taken any action to resolve the issue. Fraudulent billing. PSA: All women with health insurance are entitled to free annual well-woman exams under the Affordable Care Act. The exam needs to be billed correctly as preventative care.

Some healthcare facilities here clearly just push patients through and you barely get 5 minutes of the doctor's time. You won't get that at Carnes Crossroads Primary Care, or any MUSC facility for that matter. Dr. Bigelow was highly recommended to us. He has very good bedside manner and I appreciate that he actually takes the time to listen to what is going on. Plus the MUSC MyChart app is very useful for tracking test results and for communicating with your healthcare team. The only problem that I have is that everyone else in the area must be going here too because it's near impossible to get a same day appointment. I was told if you are sick you can almost always get an appointment same or next day, but I'm not sure how accurate that is. For example, my son has a possible infection and called 8am Monday morning to schedule an appointment and the earliest they could see him was Wednesday at 4pm. So it's kind of a catch 22: you'll great health care here but only if they have the time to see you. Even with that, I highly recommend going here.

In the last two years, my oldest son broke a wrist and had to come in for a concussion protocol (two separate incidents!), he needed some stomach issues checked out, and last night my youngest son had to come in for a broken arm. Dr. Klein and Dr. Howard, Nurse Chloe, and a few other folks who I didn't catch their names were all awesome last night. Despite being a bit short handed, my son was seen extremely fast and received outstanding treatment. I truly appreciate that Dr. Klein took the extra effort to consult with MUSC, it was a bad break, and it turned out that transferring him there was the right move, they needed to do a pretty intense amount of work to get his arm right. Each time I've been to Summerville Medical Center, I felt things went well, paperwork was minimal, and wait was short. While I never want to come here again, I'm sure I will, and I'm grateful and appreciative to the hardworking team who always manage to get my kids right. J.Ja

Summerville Medical Center is conveniently located on the corner of Burton Ave and Midland parkway…read morein a very safe area of town. Parking is plentiful, max distance from parking to many different entrances isn't far and there are many satellite medical buildings around the main facility to accommodate other needs. Walking into the ER portion of the facility is extremely clean as with any reputable hospital, there are screens with patient queue and rooms where they may reside (I can't remember which to be honest). I will also state I've been in a LOT of hospitals with past issues including the world renown Cleveland Clinic so I have experience that spans a large spectrum. Checkout is relatively painless and quick while there was only 1 receptionist at 5pm on a Thursday during flu season. I suspect they have more staff during busier hours but I can't speak to that. That said when your number is finally called and the nurses are quick to get vitals and if a room is available, get the patient situated. This process took roughly 1.5 hours for us to get into a room and another hour for a doctor. It's my belief they were short staffed as things seemed to be running a little slow. The nurses were good at their jobs, as they were able to hit my mom's veins with ease and get some fluids going. Moreover since she's on record, they made sure not to give her anything she was allergic to while also noting her various alignments such as high blood pressure. I must say, please be kind to these nurses as they have a lot of patience thus they're doing the best and again I think they're short staffed. As for the doctor when he showed up, he appeared very intelligent and was able to assist with the previously conducted tests giving him a good idea of what was wrong. Now, I also believe that there's a priority so if someone has a life threating condition the doctor will be with them before lesser issues as this is just logical. That said I left with confidence the doctor had accurately assessed the situation and gave us our needed solution. Going to the hospital isn't a fun endeavor and unfortunately on occasion a necessary one. I've heard stories of long lines however that wasn't my experience. Aside from being slightly slow everything seemed to run as smoothly as one could reasonably anticipate. If you find yourself having to visit this facility, I believe you'll be in good hands.
