Dr. McLaughlin was supposed to biopsy a newly diagnosed node on the isthmus of my thyroid. Instead, she mistakenly biopsied one of four nodes that had previously been biopsied and deemed benign. She carelessy failed to refer to her own notes following the phone call in which she informed me of the new diagnosis and discussed the biopsy. This is inexcusable. read more

I don't understand how so many people complain about having to wait a little longer to be seen when once they are in with her she isn't pushing you out the door. I have found that the Dr's who run behind are usually the ones who give the patient the time they need. There are Dr's who also are behind and rush you out without a proper visit. I saw Dr McLaughlin about 5-6 yrs ago and I was having a very difficult time finding the cause of my extreme distress and she treated me better than most Dr's. She did an adrenal stimulation test 4 me that confirmed I low levels and poor response when the body needs it. She even monitored other hormone levels I was using replacement therapy for and when I had missed a few doses not thinking it would make a difference so quickly the Dr sent me a message informing me I dropped below and needed to not miss any doses. I spent yrs looking for help prior to this and a PCP told me it was just anxiety and got mad when I told him it is much more than anxiety. He put in my Records that I refused to accept his diagnosis that it was depression / anxiety and that's what Drs saw every time I sought help. I had reached desperation and went to the ER and the resident Dr was asking me all kinds of ?s looking for an answer until the head Dr came in and said he has a history of this and won't treat his depression anxiety and told me to leave. I was very lucky to have found an outside doctor Dr Bingham who at times spent over an hour w me. He found I had toxic levels of copper in me, that I had complex sleep apnea both kinds, found I had the lowest Testosterone levels he had ever seen, serious gut issues and an infection caused by antibiotics killing off all the good stuff resulting in C-Diff infection that can be life threatening, and other issues. Unfortunately he Retired. My currant PCP told me Testosterone was only for married men having trouble getting their wives pregnant. Saw him 2 weeks after the ER visit and he had already decided he was going to start antidepressants and when I tried to explain it was much more than that I got no help after barely 15min w him his nurse poked her head in and said next patient is waiting so that was that only to find out later he charged my insurance and sent me a Bill for 3 Hundred dollars claiming I owed for 2 visits because we didn't finish on time. What can you do in 15 minutes w a Dr after my temp and blood pressure were taken she said the Dr will be right in as I sat there for 10 more min. He must charge 300.00 for 30min and 600.00 for mine w no help. It really is a battle trying to get help. Good Luck to All looking for help. read more

Yeah, this woman is an asswipe. She's rude, inconsiderate, and totally unwilling to listen to patient feedback. She actually told me that my weight gain was because I must be eating 6 meals a day at McDonald's!! Oh really? Then how come a simple blood test at my GP revealed that I am clearly dealing with hypothyroid? Don't waste your time with this woman - she is a scumbag. She is literally the worst doctor I have EVER seen. She has no bedside manner and you could see how smug and gleeful she was when I got upset over her blatant prejudice. I hate to say this, but I mostly agree with the previous reviewer. On the chance that it will at least amuse someone or convince them to go elsewhere... here's my story. I arrived very, very early, and with my then-infant child (who, thankfully, slept through most of what I describe herein). I waited for 15 minutes past my appointment time, during which (I'm not making this up! You *can't* make this kind of stuff up.) a pizza delivery guy showed up with a large pie for "Christine". Not sure if it was for her, but. Anyway. I digress. Anyway, when I finally got in, I was first seen by a nurse; I explained that I was (now) on a tight schedule, and she said it wouldn't be long. She said the doctor would be right with me. Several minutes later, a medical student showed up and asked if she could take a brief history; I asked if this would add to my overall time of waiting for the doctor, since I had a postpartum PT visit scheduled for an hour later (I'd scheduled them far apart during the day, I thought.). She assured me that it wouldn't, and so I consented. BIG MISTAKE. I talked with her for 20 minutes, and then waited an *additional* 15 minutes. During this time, I could hear the doctor in the next office talking with the guy who showed up for the appointment scheduled *after* mine. Grrr... She finally came in to talk with me (now 50 minutes after my scheduled appointment time), didn't apologize for any of the delays, and brusquely went through the most basic physical exam I've ever had for my condition, and re-asked some of the questions the student had already asked. She didn't arrive with notes, or any apparent knowledge of my having spoken with the student. At some point during all this, I explained that I had another appointment to get to and therefore had to leave soon and she said, "oh, that's not a problem." (Er... It isn't? What about the thorough evaluation that I was supposed to get? Shouldn't we re-schedule the time for that, so we can figure out why my endocrine levels had been wacky since the birth of my son? Isn't that part of the point?) She finished the visit by saying that I didn't have to make another appointment to come see her, and that I only had to have my blood levels taken. Agreed; I don't have to see you again. I'm going to go see someone else. (Sadly, all of this was over a year ago. I'm now again having wacky levels and am going to see a new endocrinologist in a few weeks.) read more

Do not waste your time or money going here, unless you don't want a cure to your health problems, and would rather feel worse about yourself. They ALWAYS make me wait, do not follow up with the test results have given NO insight or solution to my health other than keep me on the meds I have always been on, prior to coming here. She attributes any weight changes or symptoms to things like laziness (even if I work on my feet all day and walk twice a day) or age (I didn't think 37 was OLD till I saw her). She will compare your medical symptoms to how her own 'aging' gave her the same symptoms! Completely unprofessional and I suggest she should record her own conversations. I'm sorry to hear other people have had similar horrible experiences with Christine McLaughlin. I should have left my own review nine years ago, but I wasn't in great shape at the time I was seeing her, and it slipped my mind afterward. I'm better now, no thanks to her, so here's my two cents. You should only see Christine McLaughlin if your ideal doctor... ...doesn't have time to explain or listen. Revel in the five-minute-or-less appointments that start late and end abruptly! ...diagnoses you without asking about your symptoms, then tells you you're either stupid, delusional, or a liar if you report symptoms that aren't in the textbook for the diagnosis she gave you. ...doesn't care that your symptoms are getting worse, as long as your lab results are getting better. ...forgets what you just said, forgets why you're there in the first place, and doesn't give you time to remind her. ...is completely inflexible, unresponsive, and uninterested. ...will let your already severe condition deteriorate to the point of a life-threatening medical emergency. She's an asshole and a terrible endocrinologist. I recommend seeing anyone but her. read more

Finding the right doctor is like dating, it's not easy and there's some hit or miss. My goal here is to write an honest review to help other folks looking to find the just right fit. Dr. McLaughlin is a fine endocrinologist in a general sense. She's knowledgeable, reasonably polite, detailed, and was on time for my appointment. I think she could be a good match for a large majority of people. However, she is a VERY traditional Western medicine doctor. As such, she was quick to dismiss anything that hasn't been proven fact by the medical model. I did not feel that she was a good listener. Her positions were in opposition to mine on a number of fronts, and she is clearly rigid in her position (which is her right). My positions are based on medical insights from trusted providers (largely MDs) as well as my own experiences. I'm more of a holistic health minded person (a la Rothfeld Center, Visions, Marino Center, functional medicine, etc) which makes her the wrong fit for me. Two members of the staff were eating Burger King at their desks. A third was eating a huge plate of fried food, which stank to high heaven. My nurse reeked of cigarette smoke. I look to my doctor's office to model high quality health standards and was gravely disappointed by what I saw. I get that we're all human and no one is perfect, but if the staff feels comfortable eating fast food in public at an endocrinologist's office, that tells you something about the overall ethos of the environment. I will be looking elsewhere for my care, but could not in good conscience say that she is a jerk or a bad doctor - just not the right fit for me. read more

The good folks at my Primary Care recommended Dr. McLaughlin and when I read some of the reviews I went back and asked them. They were interested and took my questions serious, but they were also confident that the Dr. McLaughlin is excellent. So off I went. They also went on to explain that the supply of endocrinologists is lousy so they are all over booked. Though I did not experiancy any of the issues other reviewers did scheduling issues, short visits, etc. - that shortage will envitably lead to problems other reviewers highlight -, etc. There are two layers of office staff surrounding her. The first waiting room and it's associated staff is - I'll agree - a bit rough around the edges. But then, so were are the patients I observed - a cranky lot ... but age and illness will do that to you. I found that bit of charm and humor would quickly bring out much nicer behavior in the outer staff. Her immediate staff was delightful. Very busy, but delightful. Honestly I didn't observe any, _any_, sign of the issues the other reviewers experienced. What I liked, a lot, was that she was willing to be technical about the work. Explaining in detail what was unfolding and how the systems worked. There was transparency about the science etc. I never felt rushed, but possibly that was because there was a good match between my diagnostic style and her's. read more

I admit, the reviews almost kept me from seeing her, however my insurance is limited and so I really had no choice. I was very nervous and quite anxious. She was wonderful. There is one negative, she runs late, so you will have to wait a bit, but I promise if my experience is any indication it was worth it. She took her time with me (hence the delay I assume) and explained things in detail. She made no assumptions and asked questions. I don't know what these other people are talking about! I started seeing Dr. McLaughlin in 1993 when she was specializing in Endocrinology. She was sweet and understanding and help me through a very difficult time. I stayed with her when she started seeing patients as a Primary Care Physician, and had to switch when she decided to go back to Endocrinology exclusively. I hadn't seen her in many years, but was told by my primary care to see and endocrinologist and was extremely pleased to find she was on his list of doctors I could see. After stumbling upon these reviews, I was very upset and wondered what happened. I still went to see her and was pleasantly surprised that she was still as sweet and caring as always. She was very thorough in her exam and gave great feedback as I remembered. She is certainly an expert in her field. I will continue to recommend her as I always have. Kayte, Melissa and Robin must have seen a different doctor or was unhappy with their diagnosis and not really the Dr. at all. read more

Would give no stars, but you can't. Dr. McLaughlin was my PCP many years ago in Lexington. She was the type of doctor who was very dismissive of anything you reported. At the time, I was young and healthy with few medical problems; I thought about changing docs, but did not as location was convenient. Then I traveled to Guatemala as part of a volunteer healthcare team. We were in a third world country with little to no sanitation and much endemic disease. Several days after returning, I became violently ill, having nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. On the third day, I went to see Dr. McLaughlin. She asked me how many times per day I was throwing up, and suggested six as the answer. I said how about six times per hour; she looked at me as if she did not believe me. I have to tell you, if this happens to you (you are REALLY sick and the doc questions your veracity), RUN don't walk out of that office and find another doctor to see who will listen. She said drink fluids (duh) and prescribed antibiotics; I told her that I was unable to keep anything down, and would throw them right up. She told me to come back after the weekend if I did not feel better. I picked up the meds, took them, and promptly threw them up. This was Thursday. The weekend was more of the same. I recall observing that my urine output was diminishing over the weekend, and becoming amber colored (concentrated). By monday, I had not urinated in several days, however, at this point, one less trip to the bathroom was a relief. I saw the doctor again. I had to have my Dad drive me because I felt so bad. When she saw me, my heart rate was over 120 at rest ( this is a sign of distress). She remarked that it was a little high. She told me to keep drinking fluids. I lay on the exam table thinking "what part of this do you not get?". As my father drove me home, I thought, why can't I have IV fluids? I talked to my mom who is a nurse, and she suggested Gatorade to get electrolytes. After four days of not peeing, I finally started to pee a bit. It took me two weeks of misery before I could keep food down. I lost 15 pounds. I never went back to Dr McLaughlin. My insurance changed, and I had to pick a new Primary doc. I had had chronic diarrhea since this incident. When I told my new primary this story and that I not urinated for four days after being unable to eat or drink for a week, her chin dropped to her chest. She looked horrified. She said I was most likely in renal failure from dehydration, and that I could have died or ended up on dialysis. She said I was lucky to be young and strong. It was almost two years since this had happened. I know she was right. So don't go to Dr. McLaughlin for anything, even a hangnail. And don't make the mistake that I did, which was to obediently follow my doctor's advice when I knew it was not right. Dr McLaughlin never even asked me if my urine output was dropping; this is med student 101. She should have sent me to the ER; I needed to be admitted to the hospital for IV fluids and antibiotics. There are also these wonderful drugs called antiemetics which help with nausea. Honestly, I would have gotten better medical care from a third year med student, or a nurse. This incident happened 20 years ago. I enjoyed good health for many years. Two years ago I developed pain in my left buttock which would not go away. It finally started to make me limp. Long story short, it took six months before a very attentive sports med doc ordered an MRI of my pelvis which revealed a malignant tumor. Two years later, after radiation treatment, chemo, and a bone marrow transplant, I am fortunate enough to be in remission. If you are going to a doctor like Dr McLaughlin who discounts your complaints, trust me, it would take a lot longer to get diagnosed. You don't want your cancer (or other) diagnosis to be delayed by a bad doctor. I have had three friends and relatives who repeatedly complained of significant complaints which were ignored. Two of them (men in their 40's) turned out to have lymphoma. The third had a brain tumor (my uncle). After multiple visits about it, he told the doctor, I think I have a brain tumor, and you need to order an MRI. Sadly, he was right, and died six months later. read more

I had a very good experience with this doctor, who managed my health during pregnancy. She took time to explain my condition, and was available after hours on email to answer questions. She also fit me in to see her sooner than anticipated so we could get on top of my health during pregnancy. Couldn't be happier with her. read more

I have read some of the reviews and this is my opinion of Dr. McLaughlin. Sometimes the wait is long, and that is because there are only a few endocrinologists in the area, so they are very booked up. Otherwise, the front desk staff work for many doctors, not just Dr. McLaughlin, and I have sometimes found them to be short with me, but I do understand that there are only two or three of them handling many, many calls and a whole lot of record keeping. So I will cut them a break there. Once inside Dr. McLaughlin's area, her staff are always friendly and efficient. One thing that I do find troubling is that you can clearly hear conversations between the exam rooms, and I feel that this should be investigated and dealt with because I would not want my information overheard, and it probably is by the person in the next room. Conversations are not muffled, but very clear. Dr. McLaughlin herself is wonderful. She is friendly and efficient and listens to me and answers all questions. I do not feel as though my visits are short, but sometimes I do wait longer than my appointed times. My recent appointment was scheduled for 11 and she did not come into the room until 11:25, BUT she stayed with me till almost 12:00. I do recommend her, and I will continue to go to her for my condition. People need to realize that doctors are often overbooked and they do the best they can in most cases to be as close to on time as they can be. Also...there was a review about a pizza being delivered to a "Christine". Okay, so she's an endocrinologist that deals with diabetes. Does the fact that the pizza was in her name mean it was all for her? She may have just put it in her name and bought it for the whole office! One look at her and you KNOW she isn't a junk food eater! So...let's be fair. If you don't want to wait to see her, go to another doctor. Simple. If you don't like your diagnosis...get a second opinion. Don't waste your or her time complaining about her or her office staff. If you have ever worked in a medical office you would understand the issues. As far as her being rude? I have been seeing her for two years and she has NEVER been rude to me.
