First time I had ever been to a McKay's. I went on a Saturday and it was packed. It was a title overwhelming, not knowing the store, layout, etc. They have a massive selection of used DVD's, Blu Ray, and sometimes you can get lucky and find a 4K movie. They have an extensive used book collection, as well as video games from just about any system you can think of. If you are a collector of physical media, McKay's is the place for you! read more

Huge store with more than just books! You can easily spend hours here. This gem is tucked away in a large framed warehouse styled building. Ample parking is provided, and it's conveniently located off a main highway. There's something for everyone here. From books, board games, legos, puzzles, video games, DVDs, CDs, and vinyl records, to name a handful. Most items are used and reasonably priced. Depending on which sections you look in, some items are like new condition while some items have clear wear and tear. Most items we picked up were in good condition. The books and movies were well arranged and labeled, and it was easy to find what you were looking for. Look for the bins labeled "bargain" for great deals. We found DVDs that I had been looking for, and the discs were like new. Better yet, the majority of the DVDs were $1 to $3! We also found some children's books for as low as 5 cents! Another great feature is that you can bring in used items you'd like to sell, they'll make you an offer, and they'll buy them/give you store credit. (We found a used copy of one game that was double the online price for a new one.) This store was recommended to us so we went out of our way to check it out. This store is probably the same size as a small Walmart Supercenter. Used music equipment - mixers and amplifiers and instruments. Board games. Gaming consoles and cartridges. Vinyl records of every style. Figurines. Lego. Models. Computer monitors and flat panel television screens. And yes, books and books and books. Organized by category and somewhat organized by author. Prices are very clearly marked. Some of them were a bit expensive for used books but some of them were absolutely bargains. I bought four as gifts for my daughter who teaches history. McKay's reminds me of a new store inside red barn flea market in Dalton Georgia.We went there one weekend and spent an hour looking at all the beautiful and unique guitars , comic books, hot wheels, DVDs video games action figures rat fink and various rock group tapestries and t shirts and so many other things and they have a mini arcade too read more

I love going to McKays. It's a used book, movie, music, toy store and they have such a wide variety of things. There is always something new to find. You honestly never know what you will find in there. It's kept up very nicely and we'll organized. They don't have a catalog because they get thousands of new stuff and are constantly trying to put things on the shelf. If you are looking for something specific then you have to be prepared to be patient or just go with the intent of maybe not finding it. You can also sell your old games, videos, books etc. They process is pretty simple. You can drop off your stuff and thev will take a look at what they can an can't use and offer you a price. It's a pretty cool trade off I like getting lost in the shelves and just finding new stuff I wouldn't even think of getting or even finding hidden gems. read more

In high school, I and my brother, Dad, and friends would frequent this used bookstore every month at least. We always found such treasures, books by lesser known authors at the time sold at a reasonable price. Fast forward 30 years later - McKay's is even cooler! They are two levels of used books, games, toys, albums, cds, gaming systems, musical instruments, etcs of awesomeness. I saw 5 of the classic LGBTQIA books I read during my high school years. I noticed new graphic novel authors that intrigued me. Two original Nintendo Game Boys were in the locked glass cabinet by the register. I enjoyed a conversation about spirituality with two twenty somethings in one row of books. And I discovered a sealed mini tarot card deck that drew me in with its little artworks. Happily, it seems that the cleanliness of the bathrooms at McKay's has improved greatly. No longer does one need to take care of one's business before doing business with McKay's. But also, if you are thinking about taking your comic collection in for trade, remove any that have real value. I asked today how they evaluate comics for trade and was told by the trade desk person that they pay 1/3 cover price. But if you go around to the registers, you can see that they have several on display that are in the $30-80 or more range. read more

I found some excellent deals, but it seems like the really really popular titles are nearly or more expensive than buying new. Was in town for a wedding and stopped here for a book for the long ride home? I'd looked on Yelp and was aware of how big the place was. Even so, I was completely overwhelmed as I walked in. Huge shelves, bound, packed with books, dings and toys. They even sell some electronics, video games, and musical equipment. I was completely overwhelmed in the size breaths of the shop. They don't listen to me the book warehouse I spent about an hour here, and I really only looked at fantasy science-fiction. . This is a massive store and I imagine if you come here often you'll see rotating stock. This is the place to be if you want collectible figurines , console video games, and board games. The books! This is where I spent most of my time. They separate hardcovers and trade paperback, which I absolutely loved. Most of the time, they keep these at the beginning of the sections. This was where I concentrated my time, and let's just say I had a great time here. The selection was skewed toward more recent releases, but they had s9me real gems here! Science fiction and fantasy were shelved separately, but just across the aisle from each other. They have a separate section for urban fantasy. I glanced at 5he Romance and Teen book sections and they were laid out similarly, including sections for historical romance and contemporary in romance, and teen series. I only browsed briefly in Non fiction and it looked great! Labels identified the different sections and History was divided into sections (British Royals, for example). There were some end caps that featured current hot fiction titles. There was only one disappointing thing-- the prices. Most of the books I looked at were over 8.00, unusual for a used bookstore. Having said that, this isn't strictly a bookstore, though there are certainly a great deal of books. It's more a books , console games, and pop culture. My guess is in an effort to pay for the "McKays Road Trip" marketing fumble that cost them a fortune, they have resorted to charging significantly more for books than amazon. What made the stroll through mckays (with the hopes that you never had to use the bathroom) worth it was the total haul you'd get and feel good about. Now, I get to go home and take my very necessary post mckays shower with little to no haul. Oh, and if you labor under the reasonable delusion that maybe they just aren't aware that they are charging more than amazon, let me let you down gently...which is more than the clerk did..."they don't know and don't care. Whatever is in our database is what we charge." Database??? Database?? So your database is so antiquated that it isn't capable of alerting you that your prices are mmmmm...ridiculous. MmmK, McKays. Well, I do know and I do care....and I'll tell anyone who will listen. So I'd take those profits and invest in an updated system. Otherwise, you might be left with only those hundreds of homeschool moms who banded together and made that Road Trip and now need to spend their free $800 each. I think it is one of the best and most fantastic book stores I have been to anywhere. It's so large and there's so many books there that if you do not find something you're interested in, it would be a miracle. The prices are the majority of the time very fair. It's not often that I find a book overpriced but I still do. It is a common occurrence that I will find an incredible deal on a book that looks nearly brand new for a lower price anywhere you could possibly find online or that I've ever seen. this place is massive and warrants easily an hour to explore. HUGE selection of used books, with a deep availability of sections/themes and even older, harder to find books. Ironically I heard about this place from Lego fans, but their bin of used Lego pieces is actually quite small in comparison to their other offerings. A whole wall of toys and kids' games. Being an artist I use photographic images to make collage and I went today thinking I'd like to get some items for my handmade journals. GUESS WHAT?! I found photo books under $1.00!! I really can't believe it! It's pretty awesome and makes them truly affordable. I'm so happy I made this discovery! When I first walked up I noticed a few bins people were rummaging through. Apparently they have bins out front with books in them that are FREE! I found some good things there before going inside. As I walked in I was overwhelmed. There were people everywhere and the two story thing really surprised me! If you go plan on spending at LEAST 45 minutes just walking around. My only beef is when I checked out. The guy yelled "NEXT" and didn't say hi how are you or anything at all, actually. He did tell me my total but that was it. Not even a thanks have a nice day. Just yelled at me to hurry up and could care less I was even there. I'm sure the business owners didn't train employees to act this way. Customer service is the most important thing about a business and this dude couldn't have cared less and that's why you get a 3. Do better! read more

I have been a customer of this location since 2001. I have shopped and bought here probably a hundred or more times. My family will tell you that EVERY-TIME I drive through I have to stop. We now live in Florida. Today I had a very frustrating experience which was humiliating. When I got to the counter I was told they were listing me as a vendor. I had multiple copies of a few books and I was from Florida and I was told they "profiled" me. After I tried to explain my situation the man told me "Stop, I've heard all kinds of ----". I can't remember every word to follow. I was rattled. I had to explain where I got the books from, from a school that shut down in my community.... I had to explain why I had so many of certain items. I was basically told I was a liar and had to prove who I was. Honestly, the guy was doing his job, BUT that should not have happened. Not sure why a dealer would get less money or whatever but a book is a book and a cd is a cd. It shouldn't matter where it came from (obviously unless it was stolen). Anyway, they don't need my business. I'm just a dude from Florida that comes up maybe once a year for a funeral (like today), for a visit or just to pass through. I'll definitely be back, I just wish customer service would return. There's no need to be rude. read more

As a person who loves reading and music and movies, it is hard to believe there is a place that meets all of those needs. And as you can imagine, a place like this would have to be massive. Well you would be right. Two stories, the second being open so you can look down on the rows upon rows of books. There's also comic books and video games (and systems). I can and have spent hours here. You almost have to make a conscious decision before you walk in as to what you would like to find. To just "browse around" in here is a time consuming activity, not that you would notice or mind. The team here is always helpful in checking the inventory or directly me where to look for something. Whoever started this place deserves a island or yacht or something. He/she is genius! *Insider's Tip -Bring something to trade in. Books, albums, something. They do cash pay out or store credit. And you can figure out what you'll spend it on while you wait. -I'm a CD addict (the 90's version of vinyl). So when I was staying outside Chattanooga and learned there was a branch of McKay's close by, I knew I had to check it out. If you've never been to McKay's you're missing out - they have something for everyone. I love looking through the used CDs and although they tend to be on the over-priced side, you never know when you're going to find a hidden gem. So my husband and I have been huge fans of Ed Mckays since our days in NC. We were bummed out that the nearest one was 3 hours away in Nashville when we moved to Memphis( now we're In ATL). Today we spent a few hours in Chattanooga before going back home. We found McKays on Google maps so we had to stop. We were so surprised that it is exactly set up like the one in Nashville! Every time I visit McKays I note that their prices for used books are getting higher and higher. Before buying ANYTHING here take a look at Amazon or online and see if you can get the new version - often times the new version is the same price or cheaper than what mckays is selling it for. And dont bother bringing your books here to sell. They will rip you off and then some. Once they deem that your $500+ dollars of books are not worth anything, they offer store credit or cash ( if you opt for cash, youll receive less than 50% of what they were going to give you in store credit). At one point this place was great, but now it's a greedy money making used book shop. I think I'll stick with Amazon, or better yet the library. read more

I was a bit underwhelmed. If you love a good grocery store mass market PB, this is the place for you. I was pretty disappointed in the fiction selection. You also have to know your stuff or be willing to spend time price checking. Most of the used movies I pulled were higher than brand new prices online. Beware of Book of the Month editions of books as well. You can get these for $11-16 brand new as a subscriber. I saw used editions as high as $18.50 in McKay's. read more

Where else can all of these places find a home? Mckays! I'm always able to find the latest Warhammer 40K sourcebooks. and they cost a whole lot less and if I bought them new. The biggest downside to shopping at McKay's is at their video game prices don't match up with any kind of logic. Their Blu-ray prices also tend to run more on the high side. Had never been here but my sons girlfriend loves this place so we drove out to get a gift card for her birthday and wow! You want it? They've got it! And by the looks of their line and system to buying your old books, records, comics, instruments, games, etc. I'd guess they pay fair prices for your unused items! We spent an hour wandering and I feel we barely brushed the surface. Dvds were a fair price of 49 cents and up. Only reason I gave it 4 stars out of five is because there were a few books we looked at buying that were quite abused by use and age and priced rather high!? But then other stuff we looked at and was shocked at how cheap it was. Not sure how they figure pricing, but it wasn't by wear and tear. Had to laugh they had a "Seriously Scratched" cd section. Lots of vinyls for $1, lots of current music records too! Great place to wander, pretty much a section for everyone's interest. read more

This was my first time and I was in awe. I found what I was looking for )Boston Legal season) DVD's, but alas my frugal soul would not allow me to purchase them. They were a bit on the pricy side for used DVD's. I did go and look for some travel books and was disappointed on the used book prices as well. I found some books at bargain prices but I didn't want them. I looked at the toys and games and other animated figurines (Game Of Thrones) and didn't see anything. Oh and if you go there with 3 friends, make sure you all have your phones on so you can round up everyone and leave in a timely fashion. Oh well, I did get the experience. read more

There are few times when I might complain about massive inventory. Mark it down, this is one of those times.... McKay's is wonderful for the 'browser-types' but for those searching for a particular title: It's an exercise in futility. I've visited other mega-used stores who stow items by author or title (by subject, of course!), and generally since it's easy to find what I'm looking for, I leave with more than intended in my arms.
