This year, Layne was helping me with my 2016 taxes. He provides a "Tax Planner" which you are required to fill out. The "Tax Planner" is a spreadsheet where all of the accounting work is done by you, and then his team only needs to input all of the information that you have already organized into the document. After filing an extension with the IRS to push out the April 15th deadline, Layne sent an email saying that he needed the Tax Planner to be completed by August 15th in order for him to complete our tax return by the Oct 16th IRS deadline. We completed the Tax Planner (which was all of the organizational and accounting heavy lifting to file our tax return for 2016) and turned everything in by August 11th (days before Layne's deadline). On Sept 25th (over a month after turning in our Tax planner and less than 3 weeks before the IRS deadline), we received an email stating that he will not be able to complete our 2016 tax return. The August 15th cut-off date was an estimate, and he just didn't have enough staff to get to our return. We were to pick up our documents at our earliest convenience. Layne decided that he did not have the time or resources to help us complete our tax return. But it took him over a month after we met his given deadline to reach that conclusion. I scrambled to find a new accountant who was not only able to complete my tax return in about an hour sitting with us and the tax planner we had completed, but the new accountant charged less than 1/5 of what Layne and his team had charged me for previous years. I don't enjoy leaving negative reviews, but think it is important for both existing and potential clients who expect an accountant who has been in the business since 1985 to give reasonable estimates to know about this. Just because Layne agrees to take you on as a client, it doesn't necessarily mean he will complete the work.

However, after the amount of taxes due spiked in 2024, I decided to take a look at the numbers, and discovered an egregious error. They had utterly failed to account for the money I put into an IRA, which added about $1,800 to my taxes. I had submitted to them the form to report this. They failed. Period. The following is the text exchange I initiated after Ms. Boynton failed to return my phone calls. Note that she couldn't even be bothered to proofread herself. Quite the professional, eh? ME: Maryjo, I can't access the portal to pay my bill. I've left phone messages for 3 days, but haven't heard back. Please respond. Thanks. MS. BOYNTON: Mr. Haeuser, your portal has been closed. You were very definite in your last message to me that my service was not making you happy. I sent you back a message the next day- "if you are not happy with my services, which you have been receiving for the last few years you at a very discounted rate, then I suggest you find a new preparer that is what you consider affordable. I have deleted the return out of the portal. I will close you portal at the end of the week. Sincerely, Maryjo Boynton" ME: Ms. Boynton, I did not receive that message. If I had, why would I repeatedly call you to report an issue with the portal? That makes no sense, does it? At any time you could have simply returned my call, which your answering machine claimed would happen within 48 hours, but did not. As for being happy with your services, didn't someone else actually prepare my returns? The oversight on my IRA contribution could have cost me almost $1,800. Should I be happy about that, and the fact that I just realized it happened last year as well, and I'll need to file an amended return, which should be your responsibility? Check your records - I submitted all of the required forms. Prior to this, have I complained about anything, ever? No. And yet you immediately drop me as a customer, leaving me high and dry less than 2 weeks before the IRS filing deadline, while deleting all of my records, including prior years and all prior communications, including my willingness to delay a re-file for last year until you had more time available. You're seriously misreading this situation. The mistakes were not mine, and yet you're acting as though they were. To be clear, and for the record, these mistakes were made by employees of rbce, and should be rectified by employees of rbce. MS. BOYNTON: I can decide who my clients are and how to run my business. Look else where. You are no longer my client. MS. BOYNTON: You have an extension. You have plenty of time before the October deadline. ______ end of messages ______ A real professional, eh? As such, I will leave this review open for change, and hope to update it for the better based on future interactions. On the plus side, I believe the firm conducted an accurate filing for us.
