We have been using Sumi for several years for non-trivial/non-simple taxes and she's been great…read more Every year she has more information for me about possible deductions that have been added to the tax code or how I can better prepare for the next year, so in addition to doing taxes I'm unable to do on my own, her service improves for me year after year. A brief description of the non-trivial taxes Sumi has handled for us: * My wife works normal w-2 wages, and we have normal easy turbotax tax concerns like property tax and mortgage interest and 1099-INT or 1099-DIV deductions from savings. * I work a 1099 contractor job (software engineering) where I pay estimated taxes throughout the year and have additional self-employed deductions that I'm allowed to take for work-related expenses. * I have a single member LLC for some iPhone apps I've published on the app store. * I'm part of a dual-member LLC for other apps a friend and I published and maintain. For my needs, Sumi does it all: * She does our normal easy turbotax bits. * She handles our dual-member LLC form 1065/K-1 paperwork I have no Idea how to do. * She handles my single member LLC paperwork and advises me on how to better do my 1099-income related deductions year after year. * She reminds me to file state-related franchise tax forms related to the LLCs every year. * She helps me prepare for estimated tax payments by doing the math for me and giving me pre-filled tax payments, and reminding me to talk to her about the Jan 15 one at the tail end of the year to fix any discrepencies in estimated vs actual income come year end. * She always advises me every year on new slightly more complicated tax measures I could take (Such as creating an S-CORP for myself if 1099 becomes a long term employment situation for me), but she is also very understanding of my preference to keep things simple as long as possible (and two LLCs plus 1099 income is already complicated enough as is!). Sumi is very kind and helpful, always. And, she always does her homework for me, as there have been some non-trivial / abnormal tax situations related to the dual-member LLC where she has gone back to tax books and tax peers to double check her advice before giving it. Sumi is one of those rare professionals who makes your life easier rather than more complex and makes you very glad you found her rather than someone less helpful or too over-your-head with tax legalese speak.

Layne helped us with our taxes for a couple of years. His services seemed to be on the expensive…read moreside, but my thought was that you get what you pay for. This year, Layne was helping me with my 2016 taxes. He provides a "Tax Planner" which you are required to fill out. The "Tax Planner" is a spreadsheet where all of the accounting work is done by you, and then his team only needs to input all of the information that you have already organized into the document. After filing an extension with the IRS to push out the April 15th deadline, Layne sent an email saying that he needed the Tax Planner to be completed by August 15th in order for him to complete our tax return by the Oct 16th IRS deadline. We completed the Tax Planner (which was all of the organizational and accounting heavy lifting to file our tax return for 2016) and turned everything in by August 11th (days before Layne's deadline). On Sept 25th (over a month after turning in our Tax planner and less than 3 weeks before the IRS deadline), we received an email stating that he will not be able to complete our 2016 tax return. The August 15th cut-off date was an estimate, and he just didn't have enough staff to get to our return. We were to pick up our documents at our earliest convenience. Layne decided that he did not have the time or resources to help us complete our tax return. But it took him over a month after we met his given deadline to reach that conclusion. I scrambled to find a new accountant who was not only able to complete my tax return in about an hour sitting with us and the tax planner we had completed, but the new accountant charged less than 1/5 of what Layne and his team had charged me for previous years. I don't enjoy leaving negative reviews, but think it is important for both existing and potential clients who expect an accountant who has been in the business since 1985 to give reasonable estimates to know about this. Just because Layne agrees to take you on as a client, it doesn't necessarily mean he will complete the work.
