Staff don't bother to find tables for you; they let customers figure things out among themselves. Alright. We eventually grabbed a table after 5-10 minutes, then had our order taken 10 minutes later. The food took a long time to come out: about 40 minutes (other than 1 appy that came out after 20). Good thing it was tasty. We got: -plantain fries (€6) -- tasty, especially with the sweet dipping sauce, but you get about 8 fries, so not great value. -okonomiyaki (€12.90) -- this was wonderful. So many lovely textures, flavours, and seasoned beautifully. This was the highlight of the meal for me. -vegan plate (€18.90) -- really nicely designed plate, with a base of brown rice, with a sort of Japanese slaw, vegan chicken katsu, tempura (apparently, though I didn't notice it), and stir fried veggies. Super tasty stuff. Not the biggest portion, but not bad either. My friends each got the crispy roti wrap (€14.90), which they loved, and the taste I had was great. Overall, great food, not the best dining experience. Perhaps my experience wasn't representative. I'd go back for the okonomiyaki alone.

If you've been to their spot in Oud West, you already know the vibe…read more It's the mother restaurant that started the craze, and it still holds the crown for one of the best atmospheres in Amsterdam. The concept is Japanese Finger Food (Izakaya style). Think less "giant bowl of ramen" and more "I want to try seven different things while sipping a highball." * Must-Haves: The salmon tataki is consistently perfect, and their katsu sando is a legitimate mood booster. * The Bar: Their selection of Japanese whiskies and sakes is top-tier. If you're unsure, ask the staff. Whether you're rolling deep with a group of friends or you're in town on a business trip and need a spot where you won't feel awkward sitting solo at the bar, this is it. It's buzzy, dimly lit, and high-energy without being pretentious. It's located in the heart of De Pijp. It's the perfect "anchor" for an evening. You can wander through the Albert Cuypmarkt during the day, grab dinner here, and then hit any of the neighboring bars for a nightcap. It's a popular spot and they don't always take reservations for small groups, so show up a little early or be prepared to grab a drink while you wait.

What. A. Gem. It wasn't an obvious choice, especially when we arrived as the local street market was breaking down the stalls and cleaning up the street trash outside. But these people know how to take care of you. Everything is made with intention and love. The dishes are made to share and come out as they are prepared, fresh and paced so that you're never overwhelmed by too many plates on your table. It's an intimate experience, with servers who are neither overbearing or far out of reach. The menu is simple and delicious. It has a very nice list of Japanese sake and whisky, and the cocktails are beautiful. We left in a perfect mood, neither full or hungry. The spinach salad was perfectly dressed and the Saikoro beef steak melts in the two sauces that accompany it. I cannot recommend highly enough. Such a nice send off from Amsterdam.
