And there was no doubt that, some time during the week, the hunny and I would be going to a place that every red-white-and-blue-blooded Texan goes to many times over a month: Dairy Queen. My mother-in-law once gave me a book that says that Dairy Queen is the place where Texans go to solve all the world's problems over a cup of Joe. You don't go here for the wonderful food; this is a nationwide fast food place, y'know. You go here for the ice cream, especially the Blizzards. And to chew the fat with your friends. This Dairy Queen is a good place to do that. It's kept clean, the cashiers are Southern friendly, and the temperature is a good respite from the heat. They won't kick you out if you're there for a long time. Gooood ice cream. If you need more health food, Waffle House is next door. They also serve real food, and we finally ate real food here for our recent date. We both had chicken fried steak, mine was in the form of a burger called "The Dude". Its steak was to the homestyle choke-and-pukes like Burger King would be to the Cattle Company: not great, but good enough. Dairy Queen is fast food - our order was taken to our table two minutes after we placed it - so you don't expect Cattle Company quality. I found the fries to be blech, but I don't like fries that much anyway. Overall, a good tasty place for us to reconnect with each other while the girl is with Pawpaw and Grammy. First, it's at a competitive location. Chick-fil-A is very close to the freeway exit, and Raising Cane's is across the street. And that's just the chicken. The short distance between I-10 and 11th Street has a lot of places to eat, including a Dairy Queen. Time will tell how well Layne's does. The food is pretty good, right about at Cane's level. The chicken fingers are smaller, which works out for people with smaller appetites. The Hunny had regular and I had spicy, we both enjoyed our meals. She had hers inside two slices of Texas toast, and they kept falling out. Several sauces are available: honey mustard (me), buttermilk ranch (her), BBQ, Layne's special, I forget the other. Or you can do like I did and douse the chicken with Cholula. So, pretty good, not all that memorable. It's certainly not bad, and the price is good. But Chick-fil-A has a larger selection, and is better funded with so many restaurants nationwide. And Cane's has a quirky character that stands out from the rest. Compared to them, Layne's has joined the crowd like a minor political party among the Democrats and Republicans, shouting "Hey! Look at me! I'm here too!" Well, as a member of the "Caniac Club", I had an offer for a free lemonade. So, I ordered the sandwich combo but got a free lemonade instead of the drink that comes with the combo. The lemonade costs $2.49 and they took $2.49 off the bill. However, the net difference in my total bill was only 89¢ because all they really took off is the cost of the drink on the combo. Look at it this way: Sandwich combo is $9.79. Combo price without the drink is $8.99. So instead of a meal with a non-lemonade drink costing $10.62, I paid $9.73 (including tax). In my eyes, that's not really a free drink. Just my two cents...or 89 cents, to be more exact. Four stars for food. Two stars for the crappy rewards system. Three overall.
