Fat Hippo Newcastle - GF American Burger with Fries

Fat Hippo Newcastle seems to be one of the few restaurants in the city actually open past 9 pm,…read moreafter being turned away from half a dozen restaurants nearby that either had closed early or closed due to their timetabled opening hours, I decided to visit Fat Hippo. It is located just off Grey Street, head down the steps into the main restaurant area. I was looking for this place on my Apple Maps and did have some difficulty as the sign from outside isn't too noticeable. The staff seemed friendly and explained how most of the menu could be adapted to be gluten-free - I ended up going for the American Burger, on the menu this was described as "Double patty, American cheese, pickles, ketchup + American mustard. Includes a FREE SIDE of your choice!" I would have liked to see a wider variety of burgers on the menu, perhaps with some different and more exciting sauces - only the more premium burgers seemed to come with the Fat Hippo sauce or truffle mayo. With smashed burgers being in right now, I was surprised they didn't offer them on the menu here. My food was just OK, the fries were really skinny and a little too thin for my liking, but they were still seasoned well. My burger again was average, the meat was reasonably juicy for the type of patty used, the cheese was fine, the sauces were slightly cheap and it felt like it was overloaded around the edges, and not enough in the middle. The gluten-free bun wasn't too bad - certainly not the worst I've had but also not the best either. 3* - The food was average, if you're looking for a bite later into the evening in Newcastle, this is one of the few options, so for that it's good, I would be unlikely to return if other places were open nearby though but it's nice to have a reliable choice in the city if all else fails.

A solid burger option in Newcastle…read more Burgers are smashed and steamed Smashburger-style. There are lots of options (including a chicken option) with various combinations of jalapenos, bacon, BBQ sauce and various toppings. We went with the west-coast style (ala In-n-Out, for Americans). It was good, but definitely needs to up its game with tomato slices and raw onion. The buns are also good - fluffy, dont fall apart, a hint of sweetness. One of the best burgers Ive had in Newcastle. Fries are thick-cut, but not wedges (Wendy's-style for all my Americans out there). Apparently they are fried or coated in beef drippings. Not sure I got that taste, but they were definitely good. Also tried the buffalo chicken wings, which although small, had a spot-on excellent buffalo flavor and were covered with bleu cheese and celery choppings (?). Cant complain there. Would definitely order again. Only a few beers on draft (we had Goose IPA), but plenty of options in bottles and cans. Also appear to have some nice homemade moonshine and other similar options. The ambiance is a little odd. The entrance is not super obvious and Meat:Stack is actually just food served out of a dark, loud-ish bar. I am not sure if this is the normal experience, because I think they also have a stall in the Grainer Market? Maybe they just serve their food in the bar when the market is closed at night. Anyway, the bar is a bit of kitchy Americana, but the staff is nice. Definitely go Sunday-Thursday and get the £12 meal deal that includes any burger, a side of fries and a side of buffalo wings.

Food came out. Part of the order was missing, steak was overcooked and the shrimp was raw. Tried to ask for help but was bypassed. When asked about ribs one of the servers just said 'oh' and just walked away. We finally got the ribs when we were half way through the meal and they had a taste like that had just been reheated and the sauce was grainy. A server then came over and asked can I take them away for you (the boards still were half full of food) whilst we was still eating. I am all for efficency but we could have at least finished our meal before coming to take our boardsway. No check back on how the meal was and no check back for extra drinks!!! I've been here before. And had take out and this is the worst I've experienced the service!!!

This restaurant boasts "the best burger in town." If this is true is the case macdonalds has…read morenothing to fear As a lover of burgers I was quite up to put theirs to the test. Upon arrival we were shown to whatever seat we wanted in a rather lackadaisical manner by our host. We perused the limited menu and opted for the only starter available, nachos. Advertised as being served with jalapeños and runny cheese, by "runny" the meant cheese sauce as opposed to cheese dip of some sort. Sara assures me that it was home made but i have my suspicions. Next up was the burger, I had opted for "the piggy" an all day breakfast burger and Sara the cheese burger. The piggy consisted of bacon, egg and tomato on a pork burger. Upon ordering requested no tomato, this was promptly forgotten as it arrived with the red menace hiding under the burger bed. Unfortunately this wasn't the worst thing hiding in there but more on that later. Half way through the burger i took a trip to the facilities and out side the toilets where black bags of rubbish, I believe it was just cardboard but its hardly something that I believe should be laying around for the public to see. a small gripe but one that I thought worth mentioning. anyway back to the burger By this point I was picking away at my piggy. Now I can't speak for Sara's burger but mines was incredibly bland. Neither Sara or I finished our burgers however my reason for not finishing was a far more boak inducing one. Yep you guessed it, added follicle flavoring. The host was apologetic and offered to cook a fresh burger but I couldn't face it and opted for money off the bill. I am sad to say that tangos burger doesn't even rate on the Jules scale and further more goes into the reverse and gains my first ever "Say what again motherf****r!" award. a sad day for burgers.

Great looking menu but that's about it…read more I stopped in here for dinner. The service was much faster until I had my food. I asked the waitress for a suggestion on the chips. She said I should get the "creamy peppercorn" fries, so I got that with the Tango burger. When the meal came, the whole plate was covered in a brown gravy. The bottom bun was soaked through and basically useless. The sauce was more like a brown gravy and didn't taste like peppercorns at all. I ended up eating the burger as well as I could with a fork and knife. No one came by about my drink or the food. After I finally called someone over, I asked to get the fries off the bill. Another waiter was called over to hear my complaints. 5 minutes later he came back and gave me a hard time saying I shouldn't have ordered it if I wasn't going to like it and got all semantic saying it was "sauce" not gravy. He didn't want to listen to what I had to say. I have now been waiting another 15 minutes to pay. I tried to give the benefit despite the low reviews but they were really spot on.
