I am not a poutine connoisseur, but the menu revealed lots of enticing sandwiches, many of which have an American deli look to them, so my husband and I ventured off to investigate for lunch one Saturday. Love the look of this new place - big menu on the wall, enticing displays of porchetta and other meats, as well as yummy homemade sweet things on display. We ordered at the front, and then our food was brought out to us at a communal table. We shared a salt beef sandwich, which tasted a lot like those back in my home country. Bread wasn't as good as a proper American deli, but the flavor of the pickle and the mustard adding a tang to the corned beef (aka salt beef) was so familiar. The meat was really tender and felt fresh, not heavy and oppressive as these big sandwiches can seem. We got a side of kracklin with apple jam - this is, of course, pork rinds (fried skin/fat). It's crunchy like a bag of crisps, but tastes like pork, which is weird, but also kind of delicious. My husband wasn't a massive fan, but I like all things salty and crispy, and thought the apple jam alongside was fantastic. We met one of my friends there by total coincidence, who got the poutine, and said it needed more cheese. She was impressed that they actually managed to find cheese curds, as they don't seem to exist in the UK, but they get them from a local dairy. Win! One of the owners said she was surprised and excited by how well the business was going, and hoping to expand the menu even more soon - right now it's just a couple of sandwiches and sides, albeit very creative ones that you can't get anywhere else. A welcome change from the usual boring sandwich shops you find everywhere, we'll be back for sure!

I first came across this place on my birthday a few years ago. Parents were in town visiting so we…read morewent in search of dinner on a Wednesday night. My mum had heard about this place opening, and as we approached we saw a bouncer, balloons, reals carpet etc. Turns out it was opening night and fully reserved for a private party for management and press, but my mum somehow managed to sweet talk the manager into giving us a table at the back. The night was excellent - free food and drink, first class service and great live music. Sadly after a year or so things have changed. The place always seems to be empty when we go. On a Friday night there could have been no more than 10 people eating. I think this is due to the fact it's overpriced for what it is and where it is, and the fact it's located in the Gate. To get there or leave you need to walk through the carnage that is the ground floor of The Gate. A quick meal for 2 of us came in at over £70! The food is good but not great. It's themed on a road trip along Route 66 so expect burgers, ribs, fajitas etc. It's basically a copy of TGIs or Hard Rock Cafe. The sad thing is burgers take up a big chunk of the menu but have always been disappointing. Equally I remember getting ribs once pre-cut in a bowl. I want my ribs on the rack!!! The salad with my steak last night was described as something along the lines of rocket with shaved grana padano and slow roasted tomatoes. What I got was a pile of sorry looking rocket with no cheese or tomatoes in sight. They also screwed up and brought me the wrong sauce. They have a couple of decent beers like blue moon and Sam Adams on tap, and the milkshakes are pretty good. The service was fantastic to start with, with a big emphasis on over the top, whatever you want Americanism that I'm fond of, but this energy seems to have faded away over time as well. As my report card used to say, could do better if only he applied himself more.

Holy Smokes. More like "Holy Smokes, where is our food"?…read more So... I bet you're probably wondering what happened. Apparently there was a "problem with the kitchen", which meant we had to wait a very long time for our food. However upon closer inspection the problem was probably the kitchen as a whole, as on my way to the toilet I got a good look at the serving area. It was grimy and covered in an off putting assortment of foods and slop that must had slipped off of the plates and been left to fester. Upon the eventual serving of our food we were missing 2 of our orders. We assumed that they would be there shortly....they weren't. We ended up having to inquire about the missing meals with our waiter who as it turned out had forgotten to put our other orders through, meaning we had to wait for them to be cooked too. On top of that, despite the cokes we ordered at the bar litteraly being clear and not black/browny coloured, we were served them anyway. We also had to enquire about getting some that didn't just taste of sparkling water and that actualy contained the syrup... And that isn't even the end of it. The food also tasted like raw onions, the bacon, the burgers, the brisket. EVERYTHING. All in all, the service was bad, food was bad and the hygeen was bad. 0/10, would not wait for food again.

If you're waiting for a movie upstairs, this is the place that you should kill your time at. The neon light at the window tells you whether you can still have a burger, or just the Manhattan Mist green cocktail which I like the most. The bar seats are thought triggering and the bartenders are very polite and prompt. It is neither America nor Italian, it is traveler's. Good for educated people.

Generally, you'll be told to pull your car into one of the bays to wait on your food - this happens even if there is no queue and very few customers in the restaurant....your food then arrives lukewarm delivered by a sullen member of staff. We once received a full credit for a meal that had fries that were so oversalted that we very nearly vomited on tasting. Overall, lacklustre food from equally lacklustre staff who you can tell would rather be working anywhere else apart from mcdonalds.

The dough twists are lovely, the chicken wings divine, but their minestrone is simply some of the best soup you will ever have in your life. I think I've tried all the pizzas over the years, and all the pastas too. Yesterday I had a Carnosa, cooked to perfection as always, generous to the edge toppings with a completely authentic Italian taste. The glass of house red was delicious, the service as ever, attentive and polite. Families are always welcome, but single diners are just as valued. This would be a lovely restaurant in which to introduce children to dining out properly - formal enough to feel special, friendly so that children will relax. I never ever eat anywhere else when I visit Newcastle for shopping. Why would I want to go somewhere that could only be second-best to this. The negative review here must have been the work of a malicious rival. Either that or he/she was in a different restaurant.
