Fat Hippo Newcastle - GF American Burger with Fries

Fat Hippo Newcastle

Fat Hippo Newcastle seems to be one of the few restaurants in the city actually open past 9 pm,…read moreafter being turned away from half a dozen restaurants nearby that either had closed early or closed due to their timetabled opening hours, I decided to visit Fat Hippo. It is located just off Grey Street, head down the steps into the main restaurant area. I was looking for this place on my Apple Maps and did have some difficulty as the sign from outside isn't too noticeable. The staff seemed friendly and explained how most of the menu could be adapted to be gluten-free - I ended up going for the American Burger, on the menu this was described as "Double patty, American cheese, pickles, ketchup + American mustard. Includes a FREE SIDE of your choice!" I would have liked to see a wider variety of burgers on the menu, perhaps with some different and more exciting sauces - only the more premium burgers seemed to come with the Fat Hippo sauce or truffle mayo. With smashed burgers being in right now, I was surprised they didn't offer them on the menu here. My food was just OK, the fries were really skinny and a little too thin for my liking, but they were still seasoned well. My burger again was average, the meat was reasonably juicy for the type of patty used, the cheese was fine, the sauces were slightly cheap and it felt like it was overloaded around the edges, and not enough in the middle. The gluten-free bun wasn't too bad - certainly not the worst I've had but also not the best either. 3* - The food was average, if you're looking for a bite later into the evening in Newcastle, this is one of the few options, so for that it's good, I would be unlikely to return if other places were open nearby though but it's nice to have a reliable choice in the city if all else fails.

I am embarrassed to say that I have lived in Durham for over three years and never been to Chapters…read moreuntil the other day. True, on the the outside it looks like another boring, run of the mill cafe, but I was happily surprised when I went inside. First of all, there is much more seating than there first appears. The decor is nice and it looks like there is now some kind of milkshake bar upstairs. I am happy to report that the menu has a much more interesting range than most places in Durham. Duck and orange salad, grilled chicken burgers, and cinnamon toast arent things we normally get around here. I had the chicken burger and it was great. Artisan bread, fancy lettuce, the works. Also happy to report that the service was some of the best I have had in Durham. Really friendly, helpful, and quick. Yay for finding a new enjoyable place in Durham!

Lovely little cafe which we stumbled upon after a walk around the castle. It has a certain charm…read moredue to it's wooden furniture and counters. We perched on the bar stools near the window to enjoy our afternoon tea. The tea was rather nice and the size of the tea cakes and scones was just right. We were left full after eating our finger sandwiches which came in two or three varieties. The place was completely empty so it was a quiet meal but the wait staff was friendly and delivered our 3-tier afternoon tea within 5 minutes, which was great as we were in dire need of the pick-me-up. I don't remember being wowed by the cream or jam but the pastries were really nice. I would come back and try their lunch/brunch menu the next time I am in that neck of the woods.

We had an excellent dinner at the Cellar Door when visiting our daughter in Durham recently…read more The festive menu was nice. Dishes we got included the lamb rump and the salmon wellington. These were excellent - 5 stars. We got excellent oysters to start. Dessert was the Christmas pudding baked Alaska, also excellent. We had a nice wine. Service was excellent, friendly and efficient. The ambience and decor are nice, with an attractive main dining area plus an atmospheric, more intimate space downstairs in the stone-lined cellar, where we ate. It is in the heart of the Bailey, the historic core of Durham.

I was here with a large group of people who were staying in Durham over the early May Bank Holiday…read moreweekend and we were booked into The Cellar Door for a meal following Evensong in Durham Cathedral, on a pre-ordered three-course menu. The quality was first class, though there was a sense of wondering if and when the spuds would arrive. I'm just glad that I didn't order the rhubarb dessert, having seen what my neighbour had on his plate. My baked Alaska wasn't much bigger though. Some of us were discussing stopping for chips on the way back to the hotel on the outskirts of Durham but that never happened as we were block-booked for taxis. I've given 4 stars overall. That's really 5 stars for quality and somewhere between 2 and 3 for quantity. My drink was Tailgate Peanut Butter Stout, which I just had to try when I heard of it. I liked it enough to have a second one but had already ordered it when I heard that they also had a salted caramel stout. I think I would have ordered that if I had known in time but 3 beers would have been a bit much.
