Quick service with low quality food that's good if you are with kids or in a hurry. Nice play area.

Out in Newcastle this weekend? Don't want to get mortal? Why not skip the pre drinking and go to…read moreLane7? Lane7 is a 1950's American style bowling alley in heart of the Toon. As soon as you walk in the door this place screams character, the friendly staff are all decked out in braces and traditional 50's gear and the basic warehouse décor gives lane7 a real charm. Unfortunately we couldn't get booked in for bowling as Christmas parties dominated the lanes so we opted for an hour of pool on the slick American tables. For one hour we paid £12 which I feel is pretty reasonable. Lane7 offer a table service which means that you can focus on your sport of choice and not waste time queuing at the bar. The bar serves cocktails, spirits and draught beer including hipster drink of choice Brooklyn. They also do food with the restaurant set up like a dining hall. There's a really nice fun atmosphere in lane7, laughter is coupled with crashing ten pins and the back and forth of the ping pong balls. Don't be a turkey, strike the right chord with your mates by directing them to Lane7!

We were a bit early so we sat in the bar area and enjoyed some cocktails and beer's. We then moved over to the dining area and we're split into two tables of 6. For starter I had the popcorn squid which was served with pico de gallo and garlic mayo. For mains I went for the Lobster roll served with fries (sweet potato fries also available) and ordered the halloumi salad as an extra side. Thoroughly enjoyed my meal. Decided to go for a liquid dessert which was the espresso martini. Quite strong but just what I needed to perk me up. One of the girls ordered an Irish coffee...bad move! I think lane 7 need to research their coffees a bit more as their version included baileys and milk. There were a few cock ups with sides arriving late and one of the dishes was more batter than squid but Amy our server sorted the problems quickly. Very friendly and bubbly girl. Bowling was a great way to get the weekend started as we all had a great laugh and some stupid bowling moves pulled. Definitely recommend booking beforehand.

A solid burger option in Newcastle…read more Burgers are smashed and steamed Smashburger-style. There are lots of options (including a chicken option) with various combinations of jalapenos, bacon, BBQ sauce and various toppings. We went with the west-coast style (ala In-n-Out, for Americans). It was good, but definitely needs to up its game with tomato slices and raw onion. The buns are also good - fluffy, dont fall apart, a hint of sweetness. One of the best burgers Ive had in Newcastle. Fries are thick-cut, but not wedges (Wendy's-style for all my Americans out there). Apparently they are fried or coated in beef drippings. Not sure I got that taste, but they were definitely good. Also tried the buffalo chicken wings, which although small, had a spot-on excellent buffalo flavor and were covered with bleu cheese and celery choppings (?). Cant complain there. Would definitely order again. Only a few beers on draft (we had Goose IPA), but plenty of options in bottles and cans. Also appear to have some nice homemade moonshine and other similar options. The ambiance is a little odd. The entrance is not super obvious and Meat:Stack is actually just food served out of a dark, loud-ish bar. I am not sure if this is the normal experience, because I think they also have a stall in the Grainer Market? Maybe they just serve their food in the bar when the market is closed at night. Anyway, the bar is a bit of kitchy Americana, but the staff is nice. Definitely go Sunday-Thursday and get the £12 meal deal that includes any burger, a side of fries and a side of buffalo wings.

Best and most likely the most healthy pizza (or 'pie') you can get in Newcastle…read more Cal clearly knows his stuff as this pizza left a delicious after taste in my mouth, unlike dominoes/pizza hut which just leave me feeling sick. This thin pizza was the bees knees!

Cal's Own has completely changed, so any review prior to April 2016 will be for their old location…read moreand old menu. Now they are in Jesmond, with a bigger restaurant and a huge, awesome pizza oven from Italy. Their soft launch menu features only Neopolitan-style pizzas - you know the ones that are only baked for a minute or two in a super-hot oven, you eat with a knife and fork, simple fresh tomatoes and the finest mozzarella, not heavy with toppings? They're very busy, as everyone is excited about the relaunch, but we came on the second night they were open and got a table after waiting only 10-15 minutes at around 630 pm, but if we went any later we would've been waiting longer. Staff are still figuring out the kinks of having a new restaurant, but you can't hold that against them at all! They'll have it down to a science within a few weeks, no doubt. Just be prepared to forgive a few occasional serving missteps. The new building is casual but sleek and shiny, with a huge open kitchen where you can watch the master work! We enjoyed some huge plump green olives and drinks while we waited for our pizzas. And what can I say, for what they are, they are the best we've had outside Italy (and probably tied with those). Perfect crust. Light, fresh ingredients. Good size for one person (a rocket salad split between two is the perfect accompaniment and will help you fill up). The spicy sausage on top was great, but you can't beat the pizza margherita for sheer simplicity. However, my husband and I both agreed that though these pizzas were great, we terribly miss the old Cal's Own. His Brooklyn-style pies were absolutely second to none, and that's what we crave when we want pizza. Neopolitan style is elegant and wonderful, knife-and-fork pizza. But Cal did huge pizzas that were sliced, and topped with all sorts of wonderful things, and we miss those every day! We hope that after a successful start, that Cal will expand his menu to include those beloved Brooklyn pies, but we'll definitely be back to try these again too!
