Sometimes you just need a good diner. If you happen to be in Cortland for whatever reason, you're…read morein luck, because this is a good one. They've got the things you want from a diner. Eggs. Burgers. Sandwiches. Fries. Nothing is going to blow your mind, but it's a diner. Solid, hearty food at a good price. I rolled with the Frisco Melt, which is a patty melt on sourdough topped with onion, tomato, american cheese, and russian dressing. Solid. One of my kids got chicken fingers and fries (solid), and the other split a tuna sandwich and the soup of the day (stuffed pepper) with my wife. The soup was surprisingly good, and the tuna sandwich was a tuna sandwich. What makes this place great isn't the run of the mill decor, but the sweethearts that work there. Our servers were so nice, even the ones who weren't waiting on us. And the lady who rung us up told me that the horrific green/orange/purple manicure that my four year old daughter gave me looked great, which was definitely not true, but much appreciated.

Locals told us: Get great sandwiches from the deli in this convenience store!…read more Shortstop Deli has been "hidden" in a convenience store in the "lower northside" of Ithaca NY since 1978! Great design-your-own sandwiches, and if you like, friendly suggestions from the staff. It was our first time in, and their helpful hints quickly showed they have every filling (savory seitan!) and every topping and a nice variety of breads. We got their "Italian mix" of cold cuts, which included Genoa salami, sweet tender thin-sliced baked ham, and meats that were either mortadella and capicola or at least richly-flavored alternates, provalone cheese, tomato, onions, a light amount of lettuce brightened with a splash of Italian dressing and a dash of fresh salad-oil, and a sprinkling of what we call "hots": lightly-spicy pickled peppers. All this on fresh French bread, which could have been with sesame, or could have been ciabatta or whole-wheat French or several others. We added a light scatter of our own crushed pistachios, which are in some mortadellas. Nobody said this couldn't be fun :-) The sandwich was a heavenly armful, shared amongst us on one of our woodsy picnics. Extra kudos again to their cheerful helpful (patient) staff!

I checked in and the ladies at the airlines counter recommended the place. I ordered egg and cheese on a bagel. I am 67 years old. I have been eating eggs, I have been eating cheese and I have been eating bagels for over half a century. This is the best I have ever had. The owner said it is the farm fresh eggs. Even the cheese was better than I have ever had and it was Swiss. The bagel also tasted fresh and not store bought like you normally get in an airport. He said he has a Mobil credit card reader, so even if you are in the gate area past Security he will bring you an order. You can order by phone or on line. Just really great food and service.

This little cafe at the Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport is a bit of a gem when it comes to airport…read morefood. Its basic diner fair: eggs, bacon, omelets, and sandwiches, but its done just as well as most of the actual Ithaca diners. The prices are also quite reasonable considering they are in an airport. However, be warned that they are located outside of security. This means you can't get through security and then relax and enjoy your meal. You have to eat before you go through security and that can sometimes be a bit stressful if you cut it close. Still this food is a far better value than you will get at pretty much any other airport, so make sure to eat here before your flight. You will thank yourself later when you aren't forced to eat the gross, overpriced, food court style offerings at your connecting airport. Note if they weren't located in an airport, I'd give them one less star. They get a sympathy star because airport food is always so bad.

The location is near SUNY Cortland in a quiet plaza, with plenty of seating inside. I ordered the fish fry with fries and coleslaw, plus a fountain soda. Bonus points for the Pepsi flavor add-ins -- I went with vanilla. The fish was huge, golden, flaky inside, and crisp without being greasy or overly crunchy. The fries were cooked perfectly, and the coleslaw was a real side portion -- fresh, finely chopped, and not some tiny afterthought. Everything was also impressively clean: floors, tables, condiment area, tray return -- all spotless. The staff was friendly, and even the other diners were chatty and welcoming. I skipped dessert because I was full and still had a drive home, but they serve Perry's ice cream and fresh-made sundaes, so I already know what I'm trying next time. Somehow I had never stopped here before, but that may have to change. Well worth the stop, and I'll definitely be back.
