To speak intelligently about this experience, I need to invoke another time, another place. Despite…read moremy desire for it to be otherwise, my mind drifts back to my days in Vietnam. At that time, meals were not something we could take for granted, flavor was not a luxury, and the MRE's were simply a way of keeping ourselves going, a necessary evil in the face of capital E Evil. I don't remember a single meal I ate in those days, and I'm glad for that. Well, this experience was kind of like that. It was a hard day for many reasons - hot and humid amid the barren landscape of any available breakfast in all of Burnsville. Sad, but an understandable result of our times. Imagine it - ordering a breakfast sandwich but no prices for any of the ingredients listed: will this sandwich be 9$ or $20? I can't know until it's time to pay, and by then it's too late (if I want to remain a gentleman). And imagine further - a 20 minute wait in the upstairs so quiet, so empty, that even casual conversation with my comrade echoed off the walls for all to hear. My belly rumbling could even have been confused with flatulence, for which I am apologetic. Picture the sandwich coming, my great relief, and the resulting disappointment to find that not a single piece of bacon awaited me. Bacon that I not only wanted, but needed. Stay with me - I took the sandwich downstairs, hoping for a quick remedy, but alas, it was not to be. Another 20 minutes elapsed, and my compatriot finished his breakfast burrito which near broke his wallet (he does have a decadent streak). I walked downstairs, confused and distraught. The sandwich had been waiting all along, but I was not made aware. I took it upstairs and as a matter of principle, peeled back the bread to see two pale, thin, soggy pieces of bacon, as if they had simply pulled apart a microwave Jimmy Dean microwave breakfast sandwich and applied that wan and insulting offering to my "food." I ate the sandwich, but I didn't enjoy it. I didn't enjoy even a single bite. And yet I knew that there was a whole day to live, and a trying journey to Ingles yet to come. I adjusted my attitude as I made some cursory field notes, which you are now reading, and resolved myself to, in the words of my friend and yours Charlie Kirk, carry the flame even as my digestive fire was dampened and abused. This review is part of my process that I learned in harder times, because I saw in my father (and cousin Tommy) what repressing emotions can do. Thank you for reading, thank you for caring.

One team, one mission. Elizabeth Gibbs, Steve Scott, and John Jones of Small Potatoes Mobile…read moreKitchen create quality cuisine while excelling in their efforts of sustainability. Their goal of having the greenest food truck in North Carolina is accomplished through several means. The most important of which is readily apparent in every aspect of their food, the use of local ingredients. Rocking F Farm's pork, Wesley Mills' sweet potatoes, and Woody's collards were a few of the NC farm fixings that Small Potatoes used in their lunch menu the day we visited. That afternoon was cold and blustery. It was the type of wind that made you look around expecting Mary Poppins to glide in with her umbrella. Along with Jerry and me, a host of hearty Small Potatoes food truck fans gathered on Linden Street in Winston Salem for a bowl of warm, filling soup. I had the Split Pea Soup. Intensely smoky ham complemented a rainbow of vegetables - carrot, skin on potato, celery, and red bell pepper. This bowl of comfort food was lightly seasoned so that the garden vegetables were the diva of the act. Jerry's Sesame Noodles with Pork had a mild broth, julienned pork, vibrant greens, rice noodles and a subtle pepper seasoning. Take a close look at your soup bowl next visit. The compostable paper bowls are lined with NatureWorks Ingeo, which is derived from plants grown in the USA. There's no plastic or wax lining. You'll love this news. Soup enthusiasts can enjoy a different Small Potatoes homemade soup every week with a Soupscription. The Omnivore option includes soups like Gumbo with Shrimp and Andouille, Cock-a-Leekie, and Smoked Bacon & Bean while the Vegan Soupscription has Curried Winter Squash, Roasted Tomato Fennel, and Tuscan Kale & White Bean. Picks up spots include the Greensboro Children's Museum, Krankie's Airstream in Winston, and the UNC campus Chapel Hill. My Moroccan Style Chicken Hand Pie had a golden thin crust that didn't overwhelm the spiced filling. Chock-full of chicken, dotted with red bell pepper, and bursting with flavor, I am adding this to my favorites list. The menu changes to use seasonally available ingredients, so be sure to try this pie whenever it's an option. Jerry had the Kasha, Mushroom, Greens & Cheese Hand Pie. The cheese really came through in this savory pie (I am guessing it might be from the Goat Lady Dairy). The flaky crust and meaty texture of the mushrooms unify with the greens and kasha. We shared the Apple Pie. Sliced apples with a hint of cinnamon in their natural sweetness made a rustic dessert on-the-go. The Gourmet Grilled Cheese had three cheeses oozing over the edges of buttery, crunchy grilled bread. I'll be keeping a close eye on their Facebook posts to see when they have a Roasted Tomato soup this summer. I can only image how delicious that combination will be! Jerry had the Braised Pork Sandwich. Tomato, onion and carrot were braised with the lean pork. The tender, shredded pork was mounded high on a toasted Brioche bun. All sandwiches were served with Tortilla Chips. On Saturday's, Small Potatoes Mobile Kitchen is at Krankie's Airstream Coffee Park in Winston Salem from 12-3 pm. They always have a vegan option, a vegetarian option, something gluten-free and soups. Make a difference. Eat local and dine with Small Potatoes, an environmentally Green food truck that supports local farmers. Arrived at this restaurant Friday night, September 11 of 2026, to meet my cousin's family of 5…read more The lady who works for me came along to order her family of 4 supper out at BK. With to-go orders and dining room orders, we would have spent upwards of a hundred dollar bill this night. There was a group of young people sitting out back with one girl fanning the back door of this BK. The sign on the dining room door said closed and when I drove to the drive-thru lane, the group of young people informed me that the restaurant was closed because their system was down. OK. I thanked them and told them to have a safe night. They wished me the same. My cousin was in the process of rounding up his family and I knew he hadn't left home yet (he is only 4 miles out) so I pulled over in the parking lot, put the car in park and proceeded to try to look his phone up to call to let him know there was no reason to come into town. Unfortunately, this young girl, whom later I was told was named Claire West, came bounding up to the open window and informed me that their policy did not allow parking in their parking lot. Fist of all, we were not parking. And second, we are long term (think from the 1980s) customers of this local BK who is inconvenienced because their system is down and was merely trying to place a courtesy call to save a family member some time and expense in not coming out. I am furious. What is wrong with common decency? I cannot expect it among the younger people, and Ms. West certainly lived up to the bill, but what is wrong with BK management that they have to hire people who are rude, crude and crude and rude? I will be taking a break from this restaurant for awhile. As a long time customer who has supported this BK through thick and thin, I suggest others think about locally-owned and operated restaurants instead of these insensitive and, frankly, idiotic chains.
