Oh, I cannot say enough good things about the Gateway Players…read more I have lived in the NE Connecticut area all my life and I had never heard of Gateway players until I did an online search for community theatres near my zip code. From my house in Thompson, CT, the Gateway Players are just ten minutes up Route 131 in Southbridge, MA. How cool! Located inside of a re-purposed old barn, the theatre space is small and intimate. I would estimate that it seats no more than 50 people. Having said that, there's really not a bad seat in the house. When you enter the small auditorium, the floor you cross is actually the stage. Patrons sit on folding chairs arranged in about 4 or 5 rows of raised seating. Because of space limitations, it seems they mostly have to work with single set plays. I'm sure there's a technical term for this, but unfortunately I don't know it. When I went, payment was by cash or check only and you could call ahead to reserve. Whether you are a local or just visiting the Quiet Corner, I highly recommend seeing a show put on in the barn by such a very authentic and talented community theatre group.

They serve soda from the Polar brand because, hello you're in Worcester, home of Polar. Popcorn is alright, it's not popped fresh like some theaters, but rather, prepackaged. Bar drink menu was decent. Staff is decent. The stage was smaller than I expected. Parking is terrible though. When you go to a packed concert like this, all the streets are filled and even the parking garage nearby is filled from top to bottom. Best to go early to find parking even if it's not good.

A few years ago, I enjoyed a guided tour of the theater, which provided a great background if its rich history highlighting the entertainment offered from vaudeville to contemporary performances. This evening's show was the comedic performance of Clue! I've also seen Jerry Seinfeld, Swan Lake, and many other great performances here. The tours are offered periodically, and they have a very active event calendar, you can check it out on their website https://thehanovertheatre.org/event/ for upcoming events. Compared to Broadway's theaters, the comfortable seats offer palatial legroom, and the Hanover seats 2,300 people, almost 20% larger than the largest theater on Broadway. The theater offers attendees beautiful architectural details, a seven-foot-tall chandelier and the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ with 2,495 pipes (no I didn't count those). I look forward to returning here very soon!
