Well it was my first time in a Commissary since 1980, but everything was well organized so I felt comfortable shopping.

Growing up as a dependent, this is the commissary is the only grocery store we shopped at. We now get to shop here when my hubby gets orders for working overseas. But that isn't often and it's usually for the duration of his order with a few added days before/after. This commissary is much more bigger than the one in Beale AFB, I love that the aisles are wide and not having to move over constantly. Their meat is great quality and I usually buy my meat at Raley's, Costco, or Sam's. Remember the days you would clip coupons? Well, they have those paper coupons for you to use if you need one. I saw so many coupons here, they were in every aisle! Plus, they have a pretty decent selection of European and Asian food items. I shall return the next time hubs gets orders. read more

You need either military ID, veteran's card or dependent ID to enter and shop here. I don't shop here often since it's a drive for me, but when I'm in the area, I always take advantage of the sales and it's tax free. I love their variety of fresh deli meat, great selection of veggies and fruits and meats. The store is clean and well organized. Staffs are friendly. Their selection of fresh food is limited, like their sushi options and chicken. It can be a hit or miss with they have. I love how it's never crowded when I'm shopping and the lines moves quickly. read more

The receptionists was very helpful. I wasn't aware that my dad's military is being replaced with a new version. They advised me of the change and provided the necessary information to have it replaced and to obtain a pass so I can shop for my parents without my dad's presence. Last time I shopped there was 30 years ago. It's very clean and has all the needs for my parents. read more

This was my first visit and I was not disappointed. Big sale items outside and more inside. The aisles were wide and clean and the prices were nice and reasonable. You could price match some things elsewhere but I really liked the variety of products. The staff were friendly and helpful. It saves some money to pay with cash. Incident 7/15/2025 I took my mother to the McClellan commissary yesterday. Walked over to the produce isle and saw an AC technician working on the lettuce display case. All lettuce was gone. I asked the guy if they removed all product to back of store and would it be restocked. He gave me what info he had and continued to work. I moved on to the adjacent display case and found my favorite hummus flavor. I looked at it closely, found a sell by date of Aug. 11 and also found mold growing under the product lid inside. I looked at the tub under that one and found the same thing. I then thought, maybe they don't know that this product has spoiled. Maybe this display case is part of the AC bank that has a defective system as well. I took the two spoiled product tubs and walked toward the produce dept swing doors to look for a manager. I saw no manager and no ring button at the swing doors. I walked to the adjacent deli dept. They were busy, I asked if they could find a produce manager for me. She said she'll be right with me. Now, at this point I was feeling pressed for time because I had left mom alone in her transport chair and she has been feeling dizzy and sometimes needs to be reassured. So, I got a little antsy at this point. An employee walked up to me and I asked do you work here? And, I could see his shirt with commissary logo on it and I said I can see you do. I showed him the two tubs of hummus and said I just thought you ought to know about this. He gave me this blank stare like he wasn't sure if anyone was talking to him. He said "thank you" and began to walk away. Then, 2 seconds later I realized he had just blown me off. So, I said to him "are you going to do anything with what I just gave you"? Because, you only said thank you and walked off? and, he said to me "I'm on break". So I reiterated, "So, you're giving me a thank you and you're gonna walk away 'cause you're on break"? The blank stare continued, but I'm sure that, at this point, everyone, even those present at the front of the store, heard me speak. I was seriously pissed off and wasn't going to let it go. I went shaking, and livid, to the front of the store to find the respect due me, and report the incident. First stop was a cashier, I said "you have a manager? I want to speak to him" . She walked me over to the security desk at the entrance. Still carrying the hummus tubs, I pointed to the mold and asked "does that look like mold to you"? She said yes, and I then told her what happened. I pointed out my 104 year old mom and told her I can't leave her for this long, I have to get back to her. She had me point out where we were and I went to resume shopping. Several minutes later a manager arrived where I was and I was able to relay the incident to him. I made no demands and he had no questions for me. Then, when at the check stand with several hundred dollars of groceries I told them they were also out of Poise moderate regular. An empty shelf I said. That was really the most important thing we came here for. And, you were out of stock. You know, it seems to me that with a decommissioned commissary run by civilians with absolutely no active duty military bases anywhere near, they should know their clientele is mostly older retired people, and keep their incontinence products in stock. Not to mention, looking for moldy stuff on the shelf. And maybe they should fire a brain dead idiot every once in awhile. read more

Great deals! Employees are very nice. The prices are better than Walmart or Winco. The only reason I put 4 stars is because the electric scooters die quickly. The representative who helped me was very kind. She said they were ordering new ones. I will definitely will definitely be coming back here. read more

AWARENESS: After checking for Commissaries still open in the Bay Area and beyond, I learned, both the PX and Commissary here at McClellan were still open. Road trip! NARRATIVE: My first trip to McClellan Commissary was back in January. Since then, I've made the trek and returned to shop for my groceries at least three times a month. Unlike Moffett Fields Commissary, this one is HUGH. They have lots of fresh produce and meats and if your like me, who always looks for the weird or hard to find items like; Red Kamaboko for my Udon soup or, freshly cooked and still hot turkey tails, this commissary will not disappoint. SCENE: The McClellan Commissary and PX are joined together and are located at the now closed McClellan Air Force Base, off of Watt Avenue, between the Rio Linda and North Highland areas of Sacramento. EVIDENCE: McClellan's Commissary has it all. A nice, clean store with every imaginable grocery item you can think of, and then some. The most impressive thing about the store IMO Is they're HUGH isles. You can actually have three shoppers with their carts, side by side on each isle. Nice! RECOMMENDATION(S): If you have access or, know someone who does. I would highly recommend you get you bottom to the store to save some money. read more

I've been going here for almost 6 years. Most people are very friendly and there's a variety of items to choose from. There is one lady on African-American that always causes issues with me. She always has to take my ID and hold it. She doesn't do it to anybody else but me. Today, I was at the self check out. I had four items swipe my card. Got a receipt and on my way. While passing her, she stopped me and blurted out. Your payment didn't go through. I said really, so I walked back with her to my POS and I said I have a receipt and she goes you do I said yes I have a receipt. I gave her my receipt and I said is my items on there she goes. Yeah you have five items. I said no I have four items. Does it say it's paid for yes I said what's the problem then well, you're gonna have to wait here cause I don't understand what happened. So I waited like five minutes for her to be on the phone with somebody that didn't want to come down meanwhile she's helping people with their purchases. I think their employees and there was a man that just walked in the wrong way and try to show her his ID but she didn't check it so he came in Without being checked. Finally, she says I can leave. I was held hostage because they don't check their receipt labels or the rolls of the receipts cause I think my receipt was the end of that role. This person needs to be reprimanded retrained to not Blair out that my payment didn't go through read more

Always the best of everything for me. Veges, fruits, customer service, cashiers & Baggers. I drive about 10 miles. I'm a shopper shark. I & all the authorized shoppers agreed to give our best years , I made it a career. Uncle Sam promised this as part of our deal. So far it's been fair and square. I have come to like this Commissary very much. The Baggers are wonderful and know how to bag. The people that work there are friendly and helpful. The shelves are becoming full again and not expired. The Ethnic food selection is getting better and more products. The only reason I am giving it four stars is the prices. A lot of things you can find a better price elsewhere, but I am saving a bit more here when I do a big shop. They are pushing their brand. I am told after each shop how much I saved, which makes me laugh. How can you save money when they raised prices more than just a few cents or dollars? The prices have gone up by fifty to a dollar plus or more? I think sometimes businesses think we will not notice. Wrong we notice. I think if people came together and said, "No more, and we are not going to purchase that product anymore"! Companies and stores would lower prices. read more

Good clean store and good selection some of their prices are higher than Winco. They do not charge taxes but charge you a 5 percent fee and a credit card fee. So, it is pretty close to Winco when they add tax. They say the sell things at cost I do not believe that. Butt all around good store will continue to shop there. read more

Went to the McClellan commissary yesterday. They are now charging 32 cents for reusable plastic bags. At regular grocery stores the charge is 10 cents for reusable plastic bags. This is excessive. Since when is a federal government entity following a state mandated law. Plus the bags are still plastic. So much for saving the environment read more

I do not go here often since it is not the closest to my house but when I wanna stock up on groceries, this commissary definitely saves me money. It is usually not crowded at all....there is not a big base nearby anymore, only the Coast Guard at the airport so I guess most people who shop here are veterans. I like going before the last hour of closing time since it is so empty but they close the self checkout about an hour before, FYI. I like buying meat here for sure...definitely cheaper than regular supermarkets..except Costco and Sam's. As for Asian groceries, I would travel somewhere else to get more varieties and better pricing. read more

If you're a military veteran or AD service member this commissary is a familiar feeling to probably every other commissary you've ever been to. They have very familiar products and the store is set up and organized much like many other commissaries. The store is clean and the staff is relatively helpful. read more

We were at the commissary this morning, 7/11/24. It was totally chaos at the check out. There were no bag (paper or plastic). Not prepared to cope with this. We did ask one stock person who said we could ask for boxes. Got to the checkout, one cashier said no we couldn't do that. My husband went to the stock person and retrieve our own boxes to be able to haul our groceries home. This is very poor practice and stressful for both customer and staff. So what gives with no way of hauling our groceries home. Most people buy a month at a time and very inconvenient for the customer. Besides that they stated we could buy bag which was not posted a head of time so everyone was not prepared "TOTALLY STUPID". We have never had such a stressful shopping experience at this commissary. read more

If for the prices alone you decide to shop at the commissary you are demonstrating financial wisdom. However, the selection, lack of taxation on all items, and great service all combine to make this the go-to grocery in the Sacramento region. The only downside is how crowded the place can get on weekends, but that is not a major detraction. I am really glad we still have this as a resource. This place is no longer a secured base. It's not a regular military installation where there's AX or anything that you could find on a military base. They do have the commissary open and as a veteran you must have your new Veterans card to purchase groceries in the commissary. read more

Came here with my parents. You need a military ID to shop here; I no longer have one so my dad signed me in. I haven't been to a commissary in a few years but this was my first time at this location. I love how it's still open for active military and veterans. The closest commissaries are at Travis AFB in Fairfield and Beal AFB in Marysville (I think) so this place is super convenient for those who live in the area. They have great looking produce and the whole store is clean and organized. I feel this location is pretty small compared to some I've been too but they pretty much have everything you need. Overall, no complaints. Love how this is still open and I hope it remains open. read more

Four stars for nice layout and a good selection. First, you'll need a DOD or similar ID to get inside. If that's the case, then you're in a grocery store that's between Travis and Beale's in terms of size and selection. I like this store's layout more than Beale's but that's not very descriptive. I've been coming to the McClellan Commissary since I was a kid (Air Force brat) so I've got years of being a customer here. Since McClellan was decommisioned the staff has become less stellar.... it's the reason I don't give it 5 stars. The checkers used to be friendly, the baggers were tip-worthy, and the check-in staff paid strict attention to who was let in the store. Now, half the time the check-in staff barely looks at my grandmother's military ID, let alone bother with signing me in. Too bad... Other than the staff, it's the same great store it's always been. Great prices, good selection, a nice bakery corner and a really good meat department... I've found some fantastic tri-tips there. I have not visited an Air Force Base Commissary for a number of years. I was truly astonished with the outrageous prices of many items offered in the McClellan AFB Commissary. I have to wonder, given the majority of customers seemed to be 'retired' just how their food dollars can stretch if this Commissary is their only source to purschase food. I will not be back given the basic fact the same food items can run 30-50% LESS at either Food Source, Winco, or Grocery Outlet. I was also very disappointed at the pathetic little section dedicated to 'organic' food. Which, by-the-way was less than some of their non-organic food. read more

We understand that Covid has thrown business into a frenzy. But basic customer service by register clerks and baggers isn't a lot to ask. The register clerk did not smile once and the baggers were either not trained or forgot how to bag. The military bases are usually well ran, so not sure what's going on?! But out of respect for those who serve or who have served this should be looked into and rectified. Airforce proud, let's make our bases reflective of that. read more

I have always had a great experience when shopping. The workers are really friendly always smiling. I have a walking problem so I use a cart and someone is always asking me if I need help. The prices are reasonable and I can usually find everything I need. Keep praying for our military personnel, my husband passed away 15 years ago from a service related medical condition. Everything is not always visible to the naked eye. So don't forget to thank them for their service, it's why we have the Freedoms we have. read more

My wife and I have always been happy with the items we've purchased here. Their vegetable section is much better than it was a year ago... better stocked and more organic veggies. They always have lots of electric carts available too. As far as prices goes their packaged foods, meats, cheeses and ice cream is far lower than off the park. Staff is very helpful and courteous. This is like having access to Costco/Sam's club economy prices without having to buy 20 containers of each item. Prices are deeply discounted for many items compared to Raley's, Target, Walmart, Nugget, etc. I do like shopping here to save money but there are some negatives explained next. First, there is a 5% surcharge on all items. Now everything is tax free so you save 8% on taxable items, but then they nail you with the 5%. This money is said to be used for the upkeep of the store, but who knows where it goes. You are still saving a lot since a lot of stuff is 25% cheaper than other locations. The baggers get annoyed if you want to bag your own stuff and carry it out yourself. If I have a huge order, I'll let them take care of it, but if its just a few items I really don't feel like having them bag it and then tip. There is a very low selection of organic items if you are into that stuff. My wife is, so I can't really buy veggies & fruits there since they aren't organic. Also, you can only shop here if you are active duty, drilling reservist, retiree, or dependant. They check your ID when you enter and when you check out, so don't try to sneak in. read more

this is my go to place for food. the produce is always nice and fresh, the prices are usually reasonable and I can usually find what I want here. The only thing I don't like is that, there aren't too many people walking around to help you locate things, and hard to find items are not here. so I can go for the basics and be content. they don't preach that they are elite or specialty, and that's ok with me. there are never tastings, and you cannot get alcohol here, but that's why the class six is next door. but that would save me a trip across the way. read more

Every time I come here, I feel like I just got into an exclusive club. My dad is a Vietnam vet, so he, my mom, and myself all have military IDs. You need to come here with someone who has one in order to get in. I was able to sign in my boyfriend and all he needed to show was his driver's license. Neat! This is a great place to shop because it has everything that you could ever need. It's just a giant grocery store that has no sales tax! Everything is cheaper than a standard grocery store which is also a nice perk. I ended up picking up a few necessary items while here because it was cheap and convenient. I love coming to this commissary. It tends to be less busy than Travis, which is definitely a big plus. They do 100% ID check and your visitors must show their state ID. For some reason, it feels like they have a larger selection even though the store may not be as big? They have an awesome meat section and a lot of random stuff. read more

One thing bothers me about this place its the people. I realize I'm pribably one of the few non-retired people that shop here but it literally takes me 2 hours to navigate this store to get like 5-6 bags of groceries. People just standing around leaving their cart places. The funny part of the commissary if your not in a hurry is that I've had my cart stolen more than once here yelling to usually an old guy who is just pushing the cart for his wife. I find that hilarious!!! I always love the back corner with special prices. I lovethe selection of different items. Always name brand here which sometimes is not so good since other storea have 'store brand' that's always much less. Hey if you not in a hurry come on out cause we'll be. Waiting for you in isle 4 blocking it. Prices are always low. Come to find out that's because the government pays to keep the prices low. The Commissary might as well equal food stamps. read more
