Friendly staff 4. All walks of life attend 5. Suit clad lawyers. Hey, they have to make a living some how 6. People in jail = not really a high point. Some people need help and don't know where to go or who to turn to 7. It's almost like going to a DMV, but you're embarrassed to admit you had to go. I'm not a rebel. We had only stopped in Pauls Valley for coffee, but the courthouse pulled me in for a detour before we continued north. Standing here in what was once the Oklahoma Territory, it took me a minute before it hit that no, they didn't fight for the Confederacy here and there isn't a Confederate memorial on the courthouse grounds. Hooray? Garvin County was founded in 1906, just a year before statehood and it was carved out of Chickasaw Nation land and named for Samuel J. Garvin, a prominent Chickasaw rancher and merchant whose influence shaped early Pauls Valley. The courthouse is a three-story Classical Revival structure with strong Neoclassical and Renaissance Revival notes. The stone walls, Tuscan columns and decorative balustrade give the building a strong sense of formality. It's only about 1-2 miles from the regular courthouse. They've even moved much of the family drug court here. It's been a long transition, but I think it's a good one. They do have a counseling center on the other side, and the juvenile detention center here. Judge Bonner and his bailiff Tomi do a great job. The building is clean, and light. There could definitely be more parking and more seating.
