So I've been seeing Dr. McAloon for over two months with my heel pain (planter fasciitis). It got better after she administered a steroid shot and taped my foot. Once it came off, even with the stretching treatments, icing, she recommended and buying a pair of $125 motion control shoes, my pain came back with a vengeance.
Also, during my first, three visits I inquired about the orthotics her office offered. Each time they said they would check my insurance and each time, they acted like I never asked before. I called and called and never got a follow up until my third visit, which at that point, i was completely frustrated with my service there since my pain hadn't improved at all. Completely going off of Dr. McAloon's recommendation, I put my down payment and when I arrived on my forth visit, I couldn't get a straight answer from 3 attendants at the desk until one of them found my file on a computer and it stated that my insurance did not approve my orthotics. Great, a month later, I finally get a answer. (This is more of a knock at the office, not the Dr.) So i dish out $400 for these orthotics, yes $400 out of pocket. When I got them, they didn't fit. So they had to trim it down. $400 and they couldn't even get my foot size right.
After using them for three days, my pain got SOO bad that I couldn't even get out of bed. I couldn't even sit and watch TV without my whole foot throbbing. My next step is to try and return these evil things. I feel like i was conned. Be wary of money hungry doctors that just want you to shell out a ton of money for their products.
And for those that want a good cheap remedy for Planter Fasciitis, what worked for me is heel lifts. I'm not kidding, they cost $8, another podiatrist friend of a friend recommended them. I then went off to research this on the internet and podiatrists did recommend it. So I've tried them and and FINALLY i can walk without limping. Icing and stretching are good though, but honestly, the heel lifts did the trick for me. To walk pain free is a good thing, unfortunately it was my research & good advice that got me here, not a 'specialist'.
So rule of thumb for doctors is if they can't give you sensible, affordable remedies, its best to look online, research and find a doctor that will. They exist, but do your research. Don't get conned like I did.
UPDATE:
After seeing my review, Dr McAloon did refund my money for the orthotics I bought. I recommend buying PowerStep orthotics from Amazon. They've helped me tremendously and they are $35! I still have plantar fasciitis, but it's moderate pain, nothing like i had before. Everything i read about it seems to be 16 months min for dealing with this.
