Went this morning for a haircut, I saw Helene. She was very nice and approachable. She did a great job on my hair cut and adjusted the layers when we were finished to how I wanted it. I don't like to talk much while getting my hair cut and she didn't push to force a conversation, which was nice. My only slight criticism would be during the wash, she could have used a bit more pressure; for me, the wash is my favorite part of the whole experience. The salon itself was pretty busy, as a student salon, this is good. Due to the amount of people, students and clients, it was a bit louder than what I would have liked, however, it's unavoidable at a place like that. All the people I saw leave were happy with their results. There may not have been enough instructors as needed though, as some students had to wait a bit longer if they had questions or to get their instructors to sign off at the end of the cut. Overall, I would definitely go back to the salon for future hair care. read more

I've been to the college a number of times for a few different services. Today's hair appointment went exceptionally well. My stylist in training, Savanah did a fantastic cut and color. Andrea assisted for a portion of the color. Both stylists made easy conversation with me throughout. I have nothing but good feedback for not only the stylists but also the receptionists and teachers. Everyone was super professional and inviting. I will not be going here again! I had a coupon for a free manicure but I never do anything to my nails because I am really good at taking care of them so I wanted a pedicure since I leave on a trip soon! They took my coupon and took away the price of the manicure from the pedicure. Then I got a leg wax! I asked how much for a lower leg and they said $15. Then I went down to the counter to pay at the end and my bill was a lot higher then it should have been. I asked why and the leg was was $25. I said no the people upstairs said $15 and you should honour that. She called upstairs and found out yes they did say it was $15 but she wants going to honour it because I said I wouldn't have gotten it if I knew it was that much! It took me 4 hours there today for my services. It is a very stressful environment. I understand they are learning and teaching but because the students are not getting paid they do not care about your time. read more

Marvel College is a hair school in Calgary that offers discount hair & spa services to locals. When I was younger, my mom used to take my sister and I here to get our hair did. The average shampoo & haircut costs around $12. I know... what a steal! But remember, you're helping to train students before they get out there and cut hair professionally. There are a couple times when my hair was cut crooked, but the benefit is that before any client leaves, the teacher, who is a professional hair stylist, must approve the haircut. So if the student has cut someone's hair crooked or unevenly, the teacher will fix it. Only problem with this is that sometimes you will leave with a shorter 'do than you had hoped. I'm pretty particular about my hair now, so I'm careful as to who I let touch it with the shears. At the same time though, I do think that Marvel College is a great option because it offers a usually quite expensive service for a relatively low cost. Plus at the end of the day, hair grows, so if it ends up being a little too short, give it a few months and you'll be close to where you started. read more

I am very disappointed in my experience there. My daughter and I went there for a birthday / Christmas spa day. First off we were supposed to get our manicures done together and they were going to send 1 for a haircut while the other got a mani until I showed them the email saying we were being done together. Then something got all over my coat while I was there and they said well it could not have happened here. Looks like someone with greasy hands grabbed it in several places. The Thing is that the coat is brand new so where did the marks come from? Then less that 48 hrs later my gel polish that should last 2 weeks peeled off on one hand. My hair cut is not even one side is longer than the other I'm sure. I do not recommend going there. I get that they are students but if it was not so rushed maybe we would not be disappointed. read more

So far I've had 3 different services performed on me. 1. Haircut; 2. Spa pedi; 3. Back facial. The only acceptable was the haircut. The results was good not what I asked for, however not bad. Spa pedi for $40 was a miss. The massage was so so - it didn't add anything to the experience. The worst part was the polish. I can do it better myself without any training. I complained and it was corrected by another student. The effect was 5% improvement, meaning still bad. The back facial could have been a good experience for $50. They ask you to lay face down on a bed. It's actually quite uncomfortable as it's not a massage bed so instead of enjoying the service all I could thinking that I couldn't breathe. The next day I had 2 break outs due to treatment. Overall, I might have beer just unlucky but if I return it would be for a haircut with the same student. read more

Then it's not because I'm black that everyone who wants to touch my hair can afford it! 6 people came to touch my hair only 2 asked for permission, I am not a PUPPY. Then very IMPORTANT: 5 years long hair destroyed in less than 10 minutes because the instructors knowing NOTHING and wanting to keep their heads up put me in the hands of a student who said "I have BLACK friends. This is a College for students to study hairstyling, manicure, pedicure and massage, plus as a student you can practise on walk in clients as well as on Marvel diehards. My mother is one of them and she is in fact the person who first introduced me to this salon, she said it was a convenient and affordable place to get a haircut. I found the staff to be noticeably excited about me as a client, perhaps it was the prospect of having a new head to practise on. But as inexpensive as it is to get services there, be prepared for a very long session. You are being cut by a student and audited by the teachers walking through their student's haircut on you. Also be prepared for not getting what you initially wanted in the first place, the idea is there but it is always short in manifestation. Remember the students are still learning. My mother was convincing me that MC was the be all and end all, but I couldn't help be distracted by the new hair coloring she had just received there. Is that actually a color? I thought to myself, and did she really go out in public with that. If you don't mind all the attention, want to pay next to nothing and like surprises then by all means, go there. If what you want is a good quality haircut and don't mind paying 30 dollars, go to Shear Synergy Salon at the Dragon City Mall instead, I assure you, you will get your moneys worth and more. read more

Well, I've been going to Marvel College for about a year. It's pretty up-and-down because each time I go to get a cut & color, it's somebody new. So it's pretty hit & miss? I've had girls cut my hair crooked, shorter than asked, lighter and 'hotter' than asked.. but I've also had free treatments, and discounts on top of the already DIRT CHEAP services. The reason for my return service? A $60 professional dye job. That's right - a savings of $90. Oh! And be sure to go to their facebook page! Good enough for a trim. I've been to Marvel a handful of times, mostly because I'm a student and the price is more than fair. I find that they're a little hesitant to do any sort of style chnage (like add a fringe or do a drastic cut) but I always get a great deal when it comes to trimming off the dead nasty-ness that my shoulder legnth hair accumulates. Overall, good salon, but remember that you're helping train someone- and not necessarily helping someone get their last couple hours in before becoming licensed. I've had a diaster or two, but in retrospect realize that expecting a waist legnth to pixie transition for less than $15 was just silly. Stick to trims. read more

I have been to MC College many times, and have always walked out more than satisfied with the service I received. First time I went was to get my hair bleached because of home bleach gone wrong, and I told them that I was on a tight budget, and they did such an amazing job for almost nothing. I also went for sugaring, and loved the student I had so much (Shanique) that I asked to get her again to do my makeup on another day (which she also excelled at.) The students are closely monitored by their supervisors, and they are also extremely friendly, which is why I wholeheartedly recommend MC College for any hair or esthetic needs. read more

Had the worst manicure and pedicure here. The student was friendly but had no idea how to do a manicure and pedicure. I think it was the first time he did one on a client. Basically your paying to be their guinea pig. The teacher lacked professionalism too. Don't go here if your looking to have a relaxing mani/pedi. On a positive note it was clean. I had my eyelashes done...it was a relaxing experience, the results were amazing. My daughter (30 yrs) and I went together and we were in the same room, bonus! Her eyelashes were priceless, the practitioner took pictures since the results were stunning. Mine (59 yrs), she did what she could, I'm not as blessed as my daughter, and yet the results were staggering. My lashes are light in color hence, it looks like I'm wearing mascara 24 x 7. After 3 weeks hardly any have fallen out. I have now just booked a fill appointment. read more

I got a My hair died there on Saturday and I HAD the longest healthiest hair. I got it died baylyage and now my hair is breaking off and feels like straw I asked for ashy brown hair and left with orange hair. My hair is now much shorter than what I wanted when I said a small trim. I'm litterly so depressed now after visiting them. I don't even want to leave my house I feel like my soul was ripped out with how bad my hair looks and feels. BEWARE ladies. I learned so much about my own skin, facts I'm so glad to know. As a retired teacher myself, the accomplishment of Destiny and Judy, MC's professional instructors, has earned my full respect. Each of their students is spoken to with such courtesy and gentleness as demanding new skills are taught, practiced, developed and mastered. I noticed MC students of different disciplines moving purposefully and quietly, totally focused on their educational goals, yet the atmosphere is warm and friendly. I went for a 1" trim at a fairly expensive salon, yet lost a range of 4" to 8" of my healthy natural blonde hair. It looked as though I'd lost a fight with a lawnmower. I knew that Marvel could fix the haircut, and they did a spectacular job and I can be seen in public again without people pointing at me. The adage that we get what we pay for isn't true with haircuts, Marvel is inexpensive and really good. read more

I've been to this college for haircuts and colours a few times. Friendly and professional, just what you'd expect. The services do take longer because these are students, but they produce excellent results. If you have a little patience to wait I would highly recommend this school for your hair needs. I was recently at Del Mar College and the level of professionalism there doesn't even exist. I won't go into details but I will never go back there. Just terrible. MC collage is not just training how to do hair but they are training their students to be real professionals in an industry that seems to be flooded with people that forget the importance of the customer experience. Not so happy! Had a 9:00 scheduled appointment for a new set of gel nails. Arrived to find the students discussing clients openly and in a negative fashion. Was shoved out of the way to get in the elevator. Waited at reception for 10 minutes along with 2 other clients. FInally someone came and had us fill out some paperwork. At 9:20 I asked if it would be soon and was informed that the students were in a meeting and it was running late. At 9:30 I said I needed to leave and my aesthetician student was just coming out to get me. I discussed this with the young lady on the reception desk very reasonably and was told that the meeting was very important as they were discussing some issues with how they dealt with clients and completed CUSTOMER SERVICE! I could not help but laugh, but I left and cancelled a second appointment I had for a pedicure, even though they offered to give me a free one. Good idea, bad execution....... read more

I thought it would be a good idea to get my hair coloured at Marvel College in Calgary when I read on their website that colouring costs 40 dollars and up. What a bargain! I ended up paying 140 dollars for my hair. Now to be fair, it did say, "and up", but I was not expecting a one hundred dollar increase. What does the increase account for? According to the website, it is dependent on the length of hair and the amount of product required. I wouldn't say that the length of my hair is anything above average; I think shoulder length is quite a common hair length for a woman. Perhaps the increase came down to the amount of product required, or maybe I should say, the amount of product they decided to use on my head. My scalp is now burning from the copious amounts of bleach they felt they needed to use. I had also scheduled a cut for this visit, but the colouring alone took three hours, and they told me after that they didn't have time to cut my hair. Perhaps it was just as well- I am a little afraid to think how they would have handled a haircut after that awful colouring experience. Do yourself a favour and avoid this place! read more

Went in for a massage package with my bf. They where VERY accommodating considering I phoned the day before and asked if they could service us in the same room. I wasn't expecting much because it's a school but the girls techniques where almost to par with a massage I paid over twice as much for. 10/10 will return. read more

Pathetic experience!! I went for my hair cut and when I walked out from the salon, it doesn't even look like I have got a hair cut. The lady who cut my hair dint give me a proper seating while washing my hair, she saw my gray hair and pulled it out with her hand. Her instructor has to check before she start cutting, he said he has to go for lunch and then he left. She said she also want to go for lunch. Why do they give appointment in the noon time then? She dint style my hair properly, I asked her to do it properly. She kept on saying reasons as my hair is dry, the dryer is very hot, it will damage my hair. My hair was not at all styled properly. I asked for a volume gel or spray, she said she don't have it. Very bad experience. Will never visit next time. read more

I used to love going to Marvel because it was an inexpensive way of getting my hair bleached and roots touched up (being a dark brunette naturally, it's hard to maintain the lovely platinum blonde I have in my hair). I thought this was the only college in Calgary so I would always go there, however I will admit I've never had that great of an experience talking with the receptionist or instructors. The first time I started having problems with MC was a year ago when I booked an appointment by phone, but when I got there that day to get my hair done the receptionist insisted that I did not book an appointment, and she did so in a very nasty way. I would say it went beyond condescending and I was made to seem like an idiot for thinking I had an appointment. If you have tried to book with Marvel over the phone before, you will notice that they rarely pick up their phone. I have also left messages before but no one will ever call me back to confirm my appointment; I have to keep calling every day until someone finally answers their phone. That leads me to what was my final straw for going to MC. I tried calling MC for a month and a half to no avail (kind of understandable, it was over the Christmas break however nothing on their website said anything about the school being out for the Winter holidays/two months of vacation) and when I finally did get a hold of them and booked an appointment, the day I went they told me they were out of my toner and that I had to come back the next week. I did so, paid fifteen dollars for parking and when I got into the school, they looked at me and told me they still didn't have my toner and they would call me when they got it in later that day. Again they were condescending ("I feel sooooooo bad, we are soooooooo sorry") and I didn't get a phone call back from them, so I called (no answer) and left a message saying to forget my appointment. My friends have told me about bad experiences at Marvel as well. When you do finally get over the awful customer service, the hair treatments aren't all that bad but really it isn't worth it. Try another hair school in Calgary like DelMar or the Aveda Institute if you want to save on getting your hair done. LONG STORY SHORT: Haircuts and treatments are okay, but not worth suffering through the horrible customer service and effort to (near impossiblly) get a booking. Try another hair college! read more

called for appointment stating to reception that i needed someone with long hair exp having long hair down back and sides . i also brought in picture of how it is to look older pic of me. only needing 2 inches at most off ends and having the ability to have hair in ponytail for work. I left with a florence henderson shag cut from the brady bunch , my hair barely touches my collar so at least 6 inches where taken off back and sides barely covers ears loss of 8 inches of hair . my cut was not checked and is majorly uneven . I cannot put my hair in a ponytail either Im was very dissapointed with the lack of listening by the instuctor when i tried to show her the pic she walked away I realize this is a school but too may salons have stylists that will not listen and this is just a callout to please listen to your customers read more

I went for a haircut and ended up going to another place the next day to fix the crappy cut I received from MC College. My bangs were crooked and the sides were uneven, I understand that it is a student cutting my hair and it depends on who you get, I happend to get one that has no purpose in life and does not know what she wants to do after her 9 months of training at the college, she just gave me the impression that she does not care about what she does. I told her at the beginning I do not want bangs and that is what she gave me! Worst of all, the instructor was totally deficient, she quickly fixed the back of my hair (this is after my hair cape was already removed) but DID NOT EVEN BOTHER to look at for fix the front. I walked out with a crappy cut, hair all over my back and neck, and it will take two months to grow back my bangs. Price is cheap but not worth a second try. read more

She was extremely professional and methodical and listened exactly to how much I wanted cut off my hair (I've had lots of bad experiences with hairdressers doing their own thing). While the final results weren't exactly what I was hoping for colour-wise, she did a great job. Cut, colour and style on my giant head of curly hair that is 3/4 the way down my back was only $90. I've been here two times now. The first time I walked in with the most atrocious root situation ever, but the student handled it really well and the results were terrific. The whole experience was great, the atmosphere was up beat and my stylist was confident and professional. I just came back from my second visit today, and boy, was that a bizarre situation. My stylist didn't introduce herself or anything and seemed pretty shy. I was getting my roots done again and apparently she did not have any experience bleaching hair because she needed constant guidance from the teachers and help from other students. At one point, she turned and asked ME how long she should leave the bleach on. At the sink I was so nervous that the bleaching has ruined the Integrity of my hair (it was left on for one and a half hours! just my roots!) but thankfully it was fine. However, she didn't know that afterwards you had to tone the hair, and again had to ask an other student to do it for her. When it came time to get my cut and style, the main teacher did the full haircut for me, not the student. I asked to get my hair straightened and it took the student one full hour to do so, and mind you I don't have long hair at all. The overall colour was fine, the experience was just weird.... The whole visit took close to 4 and a half hours. Obviously I get that it's a school and the students need guidance but it was nerve wrecking for me to have a someone bleach my hair who was not really qualified or prepared to do so. I wanted to reach out to one of the teachers and ask if they could get someone else to do my hair but they were super busy helping other students. This place is cheap, and I would totally recommend it for a quick haircut, style, or for dark hair colour but otherwise this might not be the place for you. I guess it's very hit or miss and you never what level stylist you will get. read more

Absolutely DO NOT take classes at this school! Took a nail course there in 2018 and I barely no where to start to tell you what a joke this place is! To start they will have more students than their space can accommodate, students are spread out in two to three different areas, so if the teacher is talking, you better hope you can hear. The teacher we had was an esthetician, not a qualified nail teacher and she could have cared less about teaching! She was there to put in her time and get her pay check. She was more interested in visiting and getting chores done for her next class than she was in helping her students! They will tell you that the course includes learning how to use an electric file. It does not! One class is dedicated to nail art. The teachers idea of teaching nail art is to give you plastic tips and polish and let you go at it with no instruction, just like you would in elementary art class. When is was time to learn how to do a gel nail application, we were shown a video on YouTube and that was it! You are told that the kits are worth approximately $ 750.00 of your tuition, but they are put together as cheaply as possible! The kits are a mish mash of product, with no rhyme or reason as to how they were put together. Some of the product was defective and we were told to hand it back in and it would be replaced. Which it never was! They will spend a certain amount of time talking about proper safety and sanitation, but will not provide proper supplies to do so in the classes. Several calls to the health board were made in this regard. To sum things up, you are lucky to leave this school with a minimum understanding of how to do nails. Save your money! Go somewhere else! This school is just interested in making money and could care less about the education their students receive! read more

I finished the makeup course with MC college. I have had NOTHING but HASSLE, unorganization, and nothing but different answers every time I needed something. Admission adviser has no clue about the program. First of all DON'T trust information you get on the website. They offer to teach you how to apply day and evening make up, glamour, runway and bridal. Well, it's a flat-out lie! We have never been taught how to apply runway and bridal make up! They also were supposed to teach us how to apply cluster lashes (according to our "make -up book outline") and we never did. And they lie a lot. We've been told that school will provide professional materials during classes like skin care products, and professional paints for Halloween make up. Well, we didn't have skin care products even on our Final exam and no paints for Halloween make up, we had to use eyeshadows and water. In general all course was almost like self learning/experimenting. I think the most disappointing thing was the kit they provided you with. Some items didn't even come, some girls got things that others didn't, the product was not very good (some items were expired) and the actual kit itself was a is complete crap, I am disappointed with what I learned you'd get more out of watching youtube videos for FREE and learning how to apply makeup. I have talked with my own classmates and it seems like everyone has had some sort of frustration with this school. And it took college a MONTH to send "the certificate" which looks like fake one, because it has no hours of training, no id number, just a cheap printout with your name on it and MC logo. Don't waste your money, you will get absolutely nothing in return except shitty expired products, zero knowledge and useless certificate (Mac didn't believe that this is a real certificate so I didn't get any pro discounts). read more

I would never in a million years go here again. One of the students, Saira, burned several chunks of skin on my face by repeatedly applying wax that was too hot. My face now has first degree burns, and the instructor, Rishma, didn't do anything except apply aloe and charge me full price. This college is the worst, and Rishma and Saira should be expelled/fired. read more

I went to Marvel yesterday and had my hair cut and coloured. I went from shoulder length highlighted hair with 1 inch roots to a short asymmetrical pixie with two shades of highlights. Two girls did my highlights and another girl did the cut. I was there from 2:30-7:15. I am SO happy with how my hair came out! The cut and colour are exactly what I wanted. While I definitely spent more time there than I would have in a normal salon, it only cost me $75. They also included free full-size bottles of colour care shampoo and conditioner. Desiree, the instructor patiently guided the students and made sure they did everything correctly. She helped a lot to get the cut to look just like the picture I brought. The girls who worked on my hair were very friendly and knew when to ask for help when the needed it. I will definitely keep in mind that it takes a lot longer than your average salon, but I will be going back to MC- the price and quality were both spot-on. read more

I took the part time waxing course here this year. Awful! Not worth the time and money spent. Instructors are rude, admin doesn't seem to know anything about the course, spa is dirty and they never had enough supplies. Never enough wax, strips and sticks. We were waxing each other with ripped up old dirty bed sheets! Gross! Some students even had to perform their exam using these as strips. They dont prepare you for what day you need a model for your exam, if you ask admin they will tell you that you don't need to set up a model. Other students and instructors will constantly be coming into the class and interrupting, the instructor left us for almost 30 minutes to go eat cake! While half the students are doing the exam you will be left in the class with nothing to do. What a waste of a day!! So disappointed in this school. I do not recommend anyone taking a course here. When you complain to head office they will not even respond. They don't care here. All they seem to care about is making money, putting as many people through the program and you will leave feeling like you barely learned anything. read more
