I visited the Board & Brush Westminster location with three girlfriends and it was so much fun - and making a wood sign was easy! The steps were simple - and the hosts helped us each step of the way. First, you choose a design (over 500 designs) online when you RSVP for your event date. When you get to the studio, your project is ready for you! We sanded, we pounded (distressing the wood), we stained, we sanded again, we painted, we sanded again, and we coated our final products. Then, we attached the hanging hardware. This is fun for people of all ages! Men, women, children - it's easy to do and you get to create a wonderful masterpiece for your home, office, porch, man cave, she-shed - wherever! One friend created an awesome shelve to hold some of her pet's supplies (leashes, etc.) and she customized it with her pets' names Another friend created a beautiful sign welcoming friends into her dining room. What a great day! My husband and I just love local art, and supporting these artists. I hadn't…read moreheard of the Jackalope Arts festival, which apparently appears every year just up the street from me in Olde Arvada. We went out on this sunny and warm October day, glad to enjoy some time outdoors in the sun. We were greeted, as well, with an enjoyable stroll through local venue booths sporting everything from beeswax products to locally mixed spices to jewelry made from local stones (think petrified wood and Marble's marble, among many others). I was drawn to the designs at a T-shirt shop, and when I couldn't find my size in the design I wanted, they assured me that I could email them and they would make it for me and send it along to my home. The jewelry maker at Waystone (mywaystone.com) promised that if I could bring her a piece of petrified wood that I had discovered in my backyard, she would make it into something special to display in my home. While she accepts items through mail, since she is just down I-70 just east of Denver, I mean to bring it right to her. I was excited to visit this arts fair, and came away with some nice items, along with the cards of some artisans to whom I will reach out for some custom items. What a great way to spend a glorious fall day outside!

A handful were too busy on their cell phones to notice people trying to ask questions and buy pieces. That's too bad when they took the time and effort to be here but maybe don't have the skill set to "sale". About 5-6 food trucks also set up near tables and a stage with live music. It would have been better if the stage faced a grassy area so people would feel compelled to bring chairs, blankets and hang out but that was not the case. Great day and I look forward to this next year.

I was looking for an opportunity to be able to learn how to paint. I wanted to find a place where I could walk in with no experience and would be welcomed with the spirit of "We are glad you are here with us, so let's learn something together!" I have been truly blessed to find MBodied Art Studio! I have found a wonderful instructor and artist in Shannon and a class filled with others who are embracing the artist within themselves. Everyone there has been supportive of my journey and has encouraged me in every possible way. MBodied not only provides me with in-classroom experience, but with their wonderful YouTube videos and Forum Digest categories and topics created for online viewing by Shannon and Michelle (owner, operator and artist of MBodied Studio). The highlight of my week is not only going to class but also the anticipation of what I will be learning and creating next. What started out as just a fun mother/son activity together has blossomed into a legitimate hobby that we both enjoy so much. The atmosphere is positive and cozy, but the instruction is nevertheless top-rate. We've embarked on some really complex assignments, but both Shannon and Michelle are able to break down the concepts and guide you through the process, regardless of your skill level. It's the ideal balance between harnessing your creative ideas, and transferring them to canvas, using techniques you've likely never tried. You'll enjoy the journey, as well as the end product. I would highly recommend MBodied Art Studio to anyone interested in painting as a novice or as someone who has had more experience. Michelle was very patient (especially with children, who were part of the "painting together" class I took today) and helpful with all the stages of painting, even when it does not follow the theme of the class. Her studio reminds me of a combination of a cozy living room and an art classroom. I found it pleasant and relaxing. This studio is amazing! Such a warm, cozy, welcoming feel. Michelle hosts open paint nights every other week which are free if you have your own supplies or $5-15 if you buy supplies from her. I think it's incredibly wonderful that she allows me and other artists to come create at her studio for free and to enjoy the sense of community. I've been to the paint and sip classes before where the entire class paints the same thing but when I came to Michelle's studio, I felt at ease because she gave me (as well as everyone else there) the CHOICE to pick what you wanted to do. i also got to choose the size of canvas I wanted! Wonderful! Took Michelle's beginning acrylic painting class and found it to be both challenging yet accomplishable. I learned a lot of tricks and got over my fear of the blank canvas. I hosted a birthday party for a friend at MBodied. It was absolutely wonderful! We were able to bring in our own food and drinks. Michelle was completely accommodating to our agenda, not to mention so warm and encouraging once we got painting. We were not an easy group to lead, to say the least. I bet the "Paint Your Pet" event and candle-making workshops if you want to branch out is pretty popular! Very disappointing experience. There is an old adage: Just because someone knows how to do…read moresomething doesn't mean that he knows how to teach that skill to others. BSOFA is a prime example. A teacher, who, though pleasant, has no ability to teach. I took a beginner's class. (Though except for myself, there were no other beginners in the class. They clearly all had some level of experience.) The teacher would do a twenty-second demonstration (no exaggeration) of something, then expect everyone to immediately know how to do that thing perfectly. It was beyond frustrating. First class, I could tell that I wasn't executing the skill correctly. It was exceedingly obvious that my canvas looked nothing like the other, experienced students' canvases. But though the instructor walked around the table looking at the canvases, for multiple hours, he never said a word about mine. Never proactively provided any constructive criticism. He just let me flounder around for hours without any guidance. (He did interact more with the students who were doing better. There were about eight of us total.) Next class, I decided to make him provide some feedback. (Unsuccessfully, as it turned out.) I would stop him as he walked by, ask him to look at my canvas, and ask for feedback. He was non-committal. (Pleasant, but not helpful.) I would then point out something on the canvas, and say, this isn't right, is it? And he would sort of agree. But he never offered to show me how to do the skill correctly, or provide anything but a vague comment. During that class, I must have stopped him a half-dozen times, if not more, to ask for feedback, but received essentially none. By the third class, I had mostly given up. I listened, trying to glean as much as possible from the twenty-second demonstrations, but unfortunately accepted the reality that the teacher had no ability to actually teach. Again, the teacher was pleasant. But he was also a passive, low-energy person who clearly had zero ability to teach a skill to students. And, oddly, the less experienced the student, the more uncomfortable and non-interactive he became. In a beginner's class. BSOFA makes no sense. Do they not understand? People take classes because they want to learn. They pay good money to attend classes because they want to learn. Allowing a beginner to flounder, with minimal guidance, in a beginner's class is not only unacceptable, but actually a little cruel. BSOFA takes a positive, eager, happy-to-be-there student, and turns her into someone who never wants to experience any of it ever again.

You will do in 4 sessions what would take years in a classical art school. As with everything, to be successful you must commit, practice outside of class even. (If you want to be a good skier you need to practice outside your ski class too). The school gives first class instruction. I am totally addicted to this place. Bravo BFA team! You bring Florence to Boulder.
