The also have an annex for maker space and events a few doors further west. Today they had a fundraiser and art display in honor and celebration of International Women's Day. When I saw the announcement that the Handweaver's Guild of Boulder would be in the Annex demonstrating the weaving process and set up for patrons of all ages but especially children to try it out, I knew I had to go. In my younger years, I had been a member of this Guild and had done a demonstration with a group of weavers at the Denver Stock Show in 1975. I was hoping to hear what the Guild is doing now and hopefully run into someone from that era that is still active. And indeed I did. It's amazing work they do and the Gallery in the main building displays weaving as well as so many other arts. Paintings, drawings, jewelry, pottery, fabric designs, handmade cards, all sorts of art objects are to be seen and purchased . It's a very nice space and was very well attended on this holiday on a beautiful spring day. But nice stop in to the gallery anytime and look into the programs they run in the Annex. It's easy to find and there is street parking in the area and a bus stop 2 blocks away. And eateries in the area too.

Here's a rough approximation of our encounter. All shouted through a mail slot, mind you: Lady: Yes? I'd open the door, but I can't find the keys. Tara: Hi! Are you open? Lady: We're never open. How did you find out about me? Tara: Online. A website called Yelp. Lady: That's unlikely. I don't advertise. Tara: So, you don't have shows? Lady: Nope. Tara: So, you aren't open to the public? Lady: Nope. Tara: Well, okay. Thanks anyway. I'm not sure what goes on there, but we're not invited.

Live music is a nice touch...except when it blows. As a gallery however, this place was pretty cool: it had an old hardwood feel with old west style paintings, except with modern themes. I even saw a random Buddha or two just to throw me off. They also were serving some decent wine for free, had a nice upstairs, and also had some affordable stuff. Signed up for the beginner's glass blowing workshop class (5 students and a teacher). One person made an orb that the instructor, Agnes, demonstrated the glass blowing technique. The whole process from start to finish was amazing, a little nerve-wracking at times (working in a hot environment with spontaneous glass) but overall a fun thrilling experience! Agnes is extremely knowledgeable. She shared with us her studies in Italy and how she has dominated in a predominately male field. She runs her own business and sets her own hours, so at times she may not be quick to respond but was a great communicator in class and afterward when we scheduled pick-up of our finished pieces.

Blowing glass is hard work with way more risk since you are working with molten glass. Agnes isn't following a manual. She has decades of experience. She knows what needs to be done, what you need to, what is safe, and what is above your skill level (that means some tasks are going to be done by Agnes). She has a deep respect for the medium and during your session, you will attempt to do the same. Yes, there are some old Groupon era reviews floating around, but let's be honest: those deals were coercive traps set by intermediaries who didn't care about the sustainability of small studios. Studios were pressured to offer steep discounts that brought in volume. That's not a reflection of her work, it's a reflection of a broken model. What you'll find now is something far more rare: a studio that trusts you to learn, to make mistakes, and to create something real. Agnes doesn't coddle, but she does empower. She's generous with her knowledge, firm when needed, and quietly celebratory when you get it right. What you will likely learn: gathering, marvering, color application, jacking, inflation, shaping, rolling, paddles, expanding, transfer to punty, and annealing. If you don't know any of these terms, you would do yourself a favor by catching a 10-15 minute video on YouTube before heading to class. If you already know all of this, Agnes may be able to create a higher level course around incalmo, battuto, or flameworking.
