The McCloskey Castle tour is one of the most delightful ways to spend an afternoon learning about local history. Thanks to Bridget for providing such a wonderful look back at the Castle history during the tour. Thanks to the Sam Mazza Foundation for keeping the building open and available for others to learn about. Also for the excellent refreshments served during the tour. Well worth the time and money spent.

I found this place on Maps under Sam's Castle. I pulled up to this castle not really knowing what to expect. They ended up being closed so I didn't get to look inside. But the outside was noticeably more run down than in the pictures I had seen and I didn't realize it was going to be in a real neighborhood. Seems like someone's house they decided to make look like a castle.

Inside castle for tea time and tour of the house and got autograph from the author, Bridget Oates of Sam's Castle of Pacifica.

I was able to see everything from the bathroom to the cardboard exhibits in less than 30 mins. Parking lot available as well as street parking. Overall, it's just a small town museum.

One of the docents, Susan, was lovely, eager to share amusing stories about and the history of different pieces in the museum. Otherwise, it's a self-paced and self-guided tour. Some of the more interesting parts were the model railroad exhibit made up of the beaches, mountains, and buildings along the Pacific Coast Highway, articles about the "surfing Santa" who skydived into a shopping center to put on a show for the kids in 1963 but ended up in the ocean and was saved by surfers, and historical photos of Devil's Slide. There's even a sports room which includes a display of the memories of Sea Bowl. It was nice to see and learn a little bit about the history of this town. Parking was free and easy right next to the little brown church. There's a gift shop too, but I skipped it during my recent visit. With free admission, this museum is definitely woth checking out and won't take long to get through (maybe 30 minutes).

It is easy to miss when driving by because there is a fence along the busy street it butts up to, and there is almost no signage. It is part of the county parks, and is manned by only one person. The building itself is incredibly beautiful in its simplicity-traditional Mexican architecture with a large roof overhang for shade, and open grounds. The interior is full of period furniture, showing what it was like to live there in the 1840s. The "shop" is nothing more than a few shelves next to a desk and chair, where one can buy a postcard or book from a very limited selection. I appreciate the dedication that has gone in to keeping this building in such great condition. I for one am a big fan of hidden gems like these in a busy place like the San Francisco Bay Area.

We came upon the small museum/Interpretive Center and were greeted by two lovely ladies. One lady showed us around the center and gave us a nice overview of the exhibits and the history of the area. Then the other lady led us outside to visit the Adobe house. The second floor is being fixed so we only toured the first floor. We returned to the museum building and we watched a couple short educational videos on the tv. Then we took about 15 minutes to get a closer look at the exhibits and to buy some postcards. The visit was totally free. They mentioned that a lot of kids come here for a field trip and they have cute hands on activities for them. I left with a greater appreciation for the Indigenous Peoples and early California history.

I can scare easily, so I was a little concerned that I would be too startled, or fearful of a scary dollface. While I did scream a few times when something sudden happened, my main take away is one of Delight, Whimsy, Playfulness and Reverence. The house in which the scene is set is a masterpiece of intricate art - filled with gorgeous mosaics, theatrical curtains, history both painted on the walls and held in all manner of precious trinkets and artifacts. Our clown hosts were a joy, and I giggle as I recall how they played with us throughout the journey. The resident witch brought a deep, grounded presence to the tour show, and I even learned that I have a haunted object at home that wants to be exorcised! (post-show homework!) I experienced the most reverence in the room that I was afraid of the most at first. The clown and witch hosts shared the history of the dolls, which is also the history of people and place. I left the room no longer scared and instead touched by the stories behind each doll. Another favorite moment was the tea party (!!!) with delicious tea and homemade cookies and pastries and even scull shaped sugar cubes!? I love the attention to detail and handcraftedness in every aspect of the experience. And finally the cleansing ritual at the end felt powerful and very real. That alone was worth the price of admission! Come enjoy a true and unreapeatable San Francisco experience!

You will end up learning quite a bit about the people in the room and it was a treat. Can't wait to go back and try another experience!
