I wasn't sure what to make of the request, but hung up. I told my husband about the phone call and he was less than thrilled. Based on the reviews, I thought there was great potential for a good meal. We drove to the restaurant, and as soon as I stepped inside, I understood what was meant about the line forming. In order to place your order, you must get in line. There's one individual taking orders. At the time we arrived, there was no line and no one inside. We asked a few questions for clarification and dietary advice. I ordered one of their specials with beans. My husband ordered an egg dish with beans and corn tortillas. We were asked if we wanted a drink, we said no, and the nice gentleman asked if we wanted water cups, to which we replied no. I had purchased several drinks the night before, as such we had several beverages in the rental car. I thoroughly enjoyed every bite of my dish. It was exactly what I thought of when I think of Mexican food. Great beans and rice. All around tasty food. My husband had the Caribbean omelette. I had an enchilada dish. I left maybe one bite on the plate.

Well..... the food was okay.. we had a large party of 10, so many different dishes were ordered and sampled.. the food overall is okay, but nothing wow about it.. rice was mid.. it just didn't hit.. if they said it was day old rice I'd believe it.. the beans tasted like they were from a bag or something.. again. They were okay not bad but not amazing, but neither rice or beans tasted homemade or freshly made, I'm Mexican and eat them daily. I feel like I know the difference but taste is completely subjective. Service was friendly our waiter was patient and took the time to answer our questions and concerns. They gave us chips and salsa, I'm visiting Texas and so far every place gives me warm salsa, maybe it's a Texas thing but it's just not something I'm used to but it tasted good just weird it's warm.. We had an issue with the horchata, not tasting at all like horchata, we asked the server what was in it and he was completely clueless and said I don't know, and on his phone while we asked this and just seemed not happy to be there, but they swapped it no problem.. thanks again, we got the lemonade and it was delicious. I ordered the carnitas and they were amazing.. I would recommend you get them yourself I've had lots throughout my life and they're definitely top 3. My mom ordered the shrimp cocktail, it didn't hit.. we ended up sharing my carnitas plate. I don't recommend the shrimp cocktail, the shrimps were tiny, precooked and I could tell they came frozen.. I love ketchup, but this was an excess. Idk something just wasn't right.. my mom ate maybe 1/4 of it and was done.. cousins got burgers and fries they were basic but hit the spot, someone else got fajitas and they hit.. enchiladas were yummy, someone got a tamale I didn't try it but they ate it all.. same with the crunchy tacos and tostadas.. overall the place was okay. Ambiance was great, it's nicely decorated and very cheerful., services was friendly and we finished it off with complimentary self serve ice cream..

They have a few different flavor profiles going on but they all seem to work. They do offer complimentary bread and butter, and have different happy hour specials during the week. For an appetizer, I ordered the crab cake appetizer that comes with two cakes and salad. I was very surprised at the size of the crab cakes! That basically could have been a meal by itself. I ate one so I could have room for my entree and I loved the lemon sauce that came with it. The flavor was yummy. Hubby the soup of the day which was like a crab bisque, which I got to try. It was creamy and a little on the sweeter side but also tasted good. For my entree, I ordered the stuffed Mahi Mahi. It comes with dirty rice and vegetables. I asked the waitress if I could sub the dirty rice and the only option she gave me was the Alfredo fettuccine. I was fine with that, but could not understand why substituting rice with the pasta would also take away my vegetables. So I had to pay an additional $10 to get a side of vegetables and I didn't like that. The portions of the entree are very big. Honestly, me and hubby could have split my whole meal and had been full off the one appetizer and entree. The stuffed Mahi was good and the sauce on it had a good flavor. The side of vegetables came with a trio of steamed broccoli, Zucchini that was sautéed in a sauce, and carrots. The waitress failed to explain that the carrots were actually a carrot puree. It was sweet and tasted almost like a sweet potato mash. It wasn't what I was expecting but surprised that it tasted so good. Everything individually tasted amazing, but I would not say that the flavor profiles are cohesive. Overall, it was a good dining experience and I left with food to still last me two more meals. I had the rest of the pasta with my crab cake for lunch the next day, and ate the rest of the fish and vegetables for dinner.

I'm finally dusting off my old 2017 review for Boondoggles to provide an update…read more I returned here last night for a pre-birthday outing. While randomly Googling, I remembered Boondoggles and decided to give the 'old place' another try. My first visit was for a dinner with classmates from UHCL; my second was with my brother. The eatery looked practically the same as it did nearly eight years ago. Its dive bar meets German beer hall vibe is still very much alive, and the place was still bustling with people. I came in with fish and chips on my mind, but a lengthy scan of the menu led me to the Florentini Chicken, while my brother ordered the shrimp po-boy. The Florentini Chicken was really good, and I think it's a solid choice for the health-conscious. The chicken was tender and the vegetables were perfectly crisp. My only wish was that the entire dish had been a bit larger, as the mashed potatoes were gone in just a few spoonfuls. On reflection, while the Florentini Chicken deserves a try, I'll probably stick with pizza next time. I asked my brother how he liked his shrimp po-boy, and he had no complaints, so I'll take that as a sign he enjoyed it. Price-wise, while the costs may have risen over the years, they were not unreasonable.
