If you happen to be driving on Highway 270 between Nowhere, OK and Nowhere, OK you will find the May Country Store smack dab in the Middle of Nowhere. To the owners of this establishment I mean no disrespect, only a good natured poke of fun because come on, you have to admit you are really out in the boonies. But I'm giving you a 5-star review because you serve a very important purpose where you're at and I want to get the attention of anyone reading this to recommend to them not to judge a book by its cover ... the May Country Store is really worth stopping at.
We discovered it not under the best of conditions. We had 2 blown tires one night just after dark just as the outdoor temperature plummeted 50 degrees, eventually down to 25F. We limped in to the only place that had a light on for miles in any direction to try to call for help. We quickly discovered that cell phone service is extremely weak and the signal comes and goes so long story cut short we sat in their parking lot until after 2:00 AM trying to call for help. The plus side was that we were off the highway and the huge semi's speeding by and that we were sitting in a lighted area. We were finally able to get some assistance from the OHP and spend what remained of the night at motel in Laverne several miles away.
Here's the good part ... the next morning the awesome folks at the Laverne Farmer's Co-op came out and replaced our tires in the Country Store's parking lot while we had breakfast inside. We were joined by a long-haul trucker who also had the misfortune to break down nearby. I don't know what you would expect at a tiny store in the "middle of nowhere" but this place has some amazing good home cooking. I had a sausage and egg breakfast muffin that was (and I'm not exaggerating) the best I have ever had. The clerk was making a batch of catfish for lunch, which the trucker had, and it looked delicious.
The store is well-stocked with a surprising number of necessary and useful items and their prices are more than reasonable.
We discovered this place by accident and I'm sure a lot of people just drive by without a glance, heading for the larger towns (which are NOT close). They are missing a treat by not stopping for lunch. I know if I'm driving by again I will make it point to stop. read more
