Excellent food and cute place on the lake. My family's fav is the Chicken Marsala and we get crab cakes and meatballs for a starter. Tonight we ordered take out due to the current covid19 stay home order. Everything was great and the owner really appreciated the business. read more

Not only did I have one of the best meals here ever, they also hosted my wedding ceremony. Getting married on a lake was one of my dreams since I was a little girl and they helped make that dream come true! Sarah and her staff did everything they could to help me make my big day perfect. Everything from helping us coordinate the rehersal, to making sure I had everything I needed. I seriously was stress free for my whole wedding. The master suite that I stayed in was picture perfect for getting ready and was roomy enough to accomidate all of my bridesmaids and my very large dress (ballgown style). Thank you so much Sarah and the rest of the Maxsells staff for helping me make my wedding day perfect!! read more

The view here is worth 4* alone. Granted, I don't grade solely on views, but on a nice saturday early afternoon, this was exactly why I came up to Northern Wisconsin/UP. I came here with my friends that I was visiting. They knew one of the chefs and like coming here every now and then. We were just here for lunch, so it was going to be a quick stop. Thankfully there weren't that many people here at all for lunch (people up here in the UP are missing out on a killer deck during the day on the weekend. Sheesh), so it was just the three of us and another couple. The waitress was very nice and seated us as soon as she saw us. I knew there was going to be a lot of drinking at my friend's place in the afternoon, so I had to keep it as light as possible. I went with the Baja Shrimp wrap and got a blackberry tea. I liked the spiciness on the baja shrimp and they put in some good sized shrimp into the sandwich. The tea though was killer. Just the right amount of bitterness that I'd want from blackberries and I was doing my best not to completely guzzle it. I'm up here probably once a year. This is definitely on my list for returning the next time I'm up here. read more

We had good food, but the service was really not good. It was our servers first week, but 2 more years will not help. He just did not understand serving. When we arrived it was German night and I had the Pork Hoc and Sour croute. This came with mashed potatoes. All were very good. I would go back for it for sure. My wife had a chicken breast that was very good. The view from this place is beautiful. read more

This review is for the suites. No one was onsite for check in. They only open at 5pm so you have to wait until then. They advertise that breakfast is included, but it is not. They give a $5 coupon for one night for a pastry across the street but if you stay multiple nights nothing is added. When brought to management attention they said they would have to raise room rates and will change the breakfast included mentioned online. While it is currently false advertising they did not take care of the customer. Overall the building has great bones but has been lacking love and attention to detail to make it great. A lot of opportunity not managed correctly. Too bad. Will not stay here again. read more

NEW OWNERS!!!! We had dinner there for our anniversary. What a change from the previous owners. The food was good but it was the positive happy atmosphere of the new owners that was so refreshing. Who had the smoked ribs and summer pasta. Both were good. read more

What a disappointment, first we walked in and and felt as though we were a bother, we were made to feel bad because we had not made a reservation. Then we were seated and given and equally rude waitress. I've heard a few good things about this place in the last year but I'm not sure if we just had a bad night or what was going on but they definitely need to work on their customer service skills. What a shame read more

Went to have dinner with my husband. We are from iron mountain. We went there several years ago and we were ignored. Decided to try it again. When we got there we were told we needed a reservation. No posting about that. We were basically asked to leave. We were not improperly dressed or rude. They were rude and we were basically asked to leave. My husband and I left. I was very embarrassed and hurt. Never were we ever treated like this. I will not go back to this place. Nor do I recommend it. read more

Reviews are too sporadic and inconsistent...or me...I would never go to a place with such sat and food problems. When it first opened there was consistency and pride in the food and service at a decent price. No wonder there are never any cars there when I visit our home in the u.p. Better get someone from restaurant impossible..you think? or shut the door.. Blurry photos or I am going blind...get a decent camera and show your best entree's. read more

Wonderful dining experience last Sunday! Started with yummy artichoke dip. Beef tenderloin kabobs and grilled salmon were excellent entrées. Finished with turtle cheesecake - best I ever had. Washed it all down with a very tasty Old Fashioned or two. Service was great. Beautiful lake views. Highly recommended this restaurant. Will definitely be back! read more

New owners are great and the new menu is even better!! The artichoke dip and chicken marsala is the best I have ever had! Plan on staying in the rooms soon!! Highly recommend! read more

The food has always been good, but service is usually very slow. Expect to be at the inn for 2 hours. Good drink options! Perfect setting in the summer over looking a lake. read more

The food courses were all Excellent. Outstanding quality and flavor. Our waitress wasn't a seasoned waitress, but made up for it with friendliness. I am accustomed to Chicago restaurants and food, this restaurant lived up to good restaurant business standards. I highly recommend it. read more

If you tried Maxsell's in the past and were not happy, try it again now. The new owners have made this the best restaurant north of Green Bay. The chef/owner is culinary institute trained, and I am guessing he was in the top of his class. We dined on the patio last week, a spectacularly beautiful spot to enjoy a meal. Our appetizer - the flatbread with roasted red peppers, mushrooms, caramelized onions, and a reduced balsamic drizzle - was perfectly seasoned, and just the right size for two to share. Atypically, we both ordered the 6 ounce tenderloin, medium rare. The meat was cooked exactly right, and had been allowed to rest before serving. It was tender, and very flavorful. Presentation was lovely. Accompanying it were silky garlic mashed potatoes, topped with expertly steamed and seasoned asparagus. Delicious. The wine list is a small selection of some of the best wines to be had that are still affordable. I had Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon by the glass. Dessert was a grand finale in every sense of the term. I had the mango sorbet - frozen tropical perfection, just exquisite. My husband ordered the banana-chocolate-almond bread pudding with salted caramel ice cream. This may be the best dessert I have ever tasted, anywhere in this country or across the pond. It is worth the 45 minute drive just to have this dessert. Service was very good, thoughtful and attentive without being intrusive. We thoroughyly enjoyed the entire evening. Everything served is made on the premises, and ingredients are locally sourced. Maxsell's has gone from mediocre to world class, and is worth long drives to get there. read more

Excellent night out with great service - hear there are new owners, if so they are doing a great job. Could use an expansion of the bar and wine selections, but the food was great and the atmosphere excellent. read more

Like the last reviewer said, the view is worth 4 stars alone. Especially on a warm clear summer day. It's just beautiful and the old house the restaurant and hotel is in has been amazingly restored. We went her for an early dinner on a Saturday night and were seated immediately. We sat inside with a nice view of Fisher Lake. The service was very good. Unfortunately, the food was just average. I ordered the crumb topped tilapia and my husband ordered the skewered shrimp. First they brought out a basket of bread which was what looked like cheap pull apart rolls that came out of a bag from the grocery store and one very thin piece of dry multi-grain bread. I don't understand why they wouldn't just get their bread from the very nice bakery across the street? Next they brought out a small very typical salad plate with mostly iceberg lettuce that looked like it came out of a bag. I had one 1/2 slice of cherry tomato on mine. It's had to find a really good salad around here. Finally, the entrees came. The broccoli that was with the dish looked like cheap frozen broccoli, no seasoning and we had wild rice which was rather bland. The fish although tasty, said it was supposed to crumbed topped and I really didn't see any crumbs, but I do think it had some sort of browned topping which was tasty. I think it was made with lots of butter. The shrimp skewers were good as well, although the shrimp were small. Overall the ambiance and the scenery is a ten and I will definitely to try something else on the menu. The menu did have lots of nice options. read more

Maxsells Restaurant and Suites - Fisher Lake in front of Maxsells - New American Near Me - Florence, Wisconsin

Group of 7, weekday evening. The view is lovely, as mentioned. The good: Cheese plate ($7) was yummy. Rib eye ($27) and Walleye ($16) was tasty , though he Walleye was missing a large chunk of breading. The Bad: Florentine soup was greasy and tasteless. Garlic shrimp and pasta ($19, 5 shrimp) was chewy and served in a small soup bowl. Chicken Marsala ($16), thin, chewy piece of chicken. Broccoli and wild rice were of the prepackaged variety and flavorless. The server seemed unaware that she was supposed to clear the dishes from table, leaving beer bottles and plates stacked up. Overall: A good place for a glass of wine and the view. Restaurant needs work. read more

Went here for a nice dinner out with two other couples in our group. We were seated timely and were happy with our outdoor seats overlooking the water. However, that is where the good review stops. Our server was completely inept. Were it not for him training another person, I would have assumed it was his first day on the job. He did not read the specials to us; we found out about those after we ordered our food as we heard another server telling her table about them. I ordered a glass of wine by name to which I received a blank stare and ended up having to point at it on the menu for him to understand what I wanted. When asked questions, his answer was mostly "I have no clue" or "yes, that's an amber beer"... Which, when it got to the table, no, it wasn't an amber beer. The trainee dumped a glass of water all over one of the people in our party. It took our salads an entire hour to reach our table. Our entrées took another 45 minutes after that. Needless to say, we were not impressed with the service. I wish I could say the food was worth it. The portions were small for the price and the flavors left a lot to be desired. Everyone in our group was disgusted when we left and we will not be back. read more

Great food and service. I had the steak and it was very tasty. Killer atmosphere. A little on the slow side because they had a large group. I was just passing through on vacation and it looked great so we stopped. No regrets. read more

We were staying in Iron Mountain on July 4 and nothing in town was open. Drove the 20 min to Florence having seen it in our travels. It was as good as it looked, a beautiful lakeside building. There was a special menu on the 4th, pork or chicken broasted with German potato salad, sauerkraut and beans, very reasonably priced. It wasn't too crowded (maybe everyone was waiting until later so they could stay for the fire works) and we were seated quickly. Wonderful friendly hostess (owner's wife?) and equally friendly waitress. We salivated watching people on the patio eating the chicken, and when it came it was delightful. Tender and tasty. Potato salad was homemade. Beans might have come from a can, but even homemade beans can look like they came from a can. The lake is beautiful, deep blue, treed and quiet, at least when we were there. It definitely deserves a return to try the regular menu. read more

Outstanding food. Had the Chicken Marsala- was excellent. Good service , great atmosphere. Definitely worth stopping in.

Fabulous location. Wine list very good. Chef J.P. and wife Lorna bring a new level of excellence to this incredibly gorgeous waterfront restaurant. If you tried it in the past, it was a different chef. J.P. is soft spoken, sincere, he will make you feel like you are the only guest. Food is excellent, service fast, friendly, efficient. We have experienced long waits in the past, and inconsistent quality. Chef J.P. is a breath of fresh air!! Try it if you haven't lately. We can't wait to go back. We felt at home, but we also felt pampered. Truly, a class act. Well done, J.P. and Lorna. read more

Stopped here on Sunday the 5th of July. We were impressed with the view and the building. Everything went down hill after we entered the building. They only had a buffet for lunch. The staff must have been tired from the celebration of the 4th as there was barely any food on the buffet. My husband got the last chicken breast leaving 3 legs. What we had was cold. I generally don't complain but we both were very disappointed with the food. The service was alright but not what we would expect from this kind of establishment. Maybe we just came on a off day but jeesh it the 4th of July weekend. If they can't have a decent buffet just do a menu. read more

Comedy of Errors! We were staying at our cabin with friends and we were very excited to dine at this lake restaurant for the first time so we could celebrate the 4th of July with them and see the fireworks. My husband called for reservations in the morning and talked with the host to make reservations for an 8pm table. When we arrived at 7:30, we were told we didn't have a reservation, but they would try to squeeze us in. When we were seated, one of the high boy chairs sagged in the middle. We were given water quickly and then a small loaf of sour dough bread. When the server came back with our drinks some time later, we asked for some additional bread. The response was "we don't have any left, but if we did, we would charge you". We were speechless to say the least! After our order was taken, we were informed that the kitchen had "hit a wall" and they were very busy and our meal would be delayed. Okay, it would have been nice to be offered something else to nibble on since they had no bread left, and it had been a while since we ordered, but no. It was nearing 9:00pm when the server once again came by to inform us of the bad news that between the time we ordered and preparing our meal, they ran out of shrimp, so my husband made a different meal selection. We asked to be seated outside since the fireworks had started and our meal was still MIA. They accommodated us with two high boy metal tables. In their defense, they did offer us free desserts to make up for the multiple delays and meal switch. However, when our friend asked for decaf coffee, he was told that they didn't have decaf and the kitchen was already closed! Really??? Perhaps if the Manager had come out to apologize personally, we would have been placated, but that didn't happen and our experience at Maxsell's was a huge debacle! The food was good, but not worth the hassle! read more

We went for the July 4th eat dinner and watch the fireworks experience. What an experience it was. We called in the morning to make a reservation and left a message. They called back and took our reservation. Thankfully we went early to have adrink because they didn't have our reservation. Even talked to the person who called us back but she didn't remember! She said our original time of 8:00 should not be a problem. We ordered what we're very expensive drinks in plastic cups because we were going to sit outside, yet others were served in glassware. We sat at our table promptly at 8:00 and ordered our food. They brought bread to the table and said the kitchen was backed up and it would be awhile. We asked for more bread and were told they would have to charge us but it didn't matter because they were out of bread. We ate our salads and after an hour were told that they had run out of one of our entrees. After waiting 90 minutes we asked if we could have a table outside as the fireworks were starting. We moved outside and received our food at 9:50. Almost two hours after we ordered. Oh and I asked for coffee and was told they were out and it didn't matter because the kitchen was now closed. The waitress was nice while making excuses for the restaurant and the food was good. However, the experience was the worst I have ever had. read more

I had some of the prime rib here over the weekend, and it was absolutely delicious! The view is just stunning and the restaurant itself is beautiful. I felt like the service was exceptional considering the restaurant had just reopened and the entire staff brand new. I have been going here occasionally for the last four years and always for 4th of July dinner and fireworks for the past three years. The food has never been great but the atmosphere is wonderful. This 4th of July even the atmosphere could not make up for the terrible meal and service. I had stopped in twice the previous week to make sure we would get the table by the window with a view over the lake as one of my friends is uncomfortable eating outside and it would be a first visit for my other two friends and I wanted everyone to be in the best seat for watching the fireworks after dinner. When we arrived we were kept waiting without any acknowledgement for over 20 minutes. I finally had to approach the hostess, Lee Ann, who was tending bar and ignoring us. We found our table had been given away and we were seated away from the lake view. Lee Ann apologized and said she would buy us a round of drinks to make up for the lost reservation and seating delay. Well, that didn't happen. She also assured us we could have a patio table after dinner to watch the fireworks. About 20 minutes after sitting down we finally got a drink (that's was almost an hour after we arrived). In the past we had always ordered from the regular menu but that night the had only pork or chicken with beans, sauerkraut and German potato salad. I had the pork which was indelible. It included a couple of rib bones which made no sense as all the meat had been cut off. The chunks of meat on the plate were tough and had an "off" smell and taste. There were also a few pieces of undercooked pig fat or rind which I didn't touch. When I returned the plate with the meat barely touched the server didn't even ask why. My friends that had chicken said it was ok. One friend asked for bread and was told it was not available. We never got the water we asked for. We never saw the server after we got our food until they removed our plates and brought the check. When we went to the patio there were no tables available, as promised, and no hostess in sight so we ended up dragging chairs and benches around to seat ourselves. We were ignored by wait staff for about another twenty minutes until we practically had to grab a server to order coffee and beer. Our coffee was barely luke warm which I gave back. My friend said his beer was cold. The Florence fireworks were spectacular which always surprises me for such a small town. In the past, the beauty and ambiance of Maxsells has made up for the over priced, average meals but no more. It took a couple of days to get the bad taste of that pork out of my mouth. The unbelievably bad service is also something I will not subject myself or my friends to again. read more

What a waste of a beautiful view! And my money... That was literally the worst experience in a restaurant I've ever had. We went for the Sunday brunch and after being seated we got to listen to the server and the chef scramble to reheat the buffet. They barely put any food out for us and what was there was absolutely disgusting. It was so gross we decided not to eat there. The ham was drench in grease and completely fell apart at the mere touch of a fork. The potatoes were brown as though they had been frozen before cooked. I had already ordered an omelet and we insisted on paying for it even though I had no intention of taking it with us. That's until they decided to charge us $15 for it. Then I took it out of principle. It was so offensive I'm writing this as I'm driving to another restaurant. The service was crap, the food was inedible, and the price was insanely inappropriate. I have never seen a restaurant fall so hard and I will never return. They made it seem as though our business was an inconvenience and a hassle. read more
