I was in Philly, on my way to Delaware and HAD to try an authentic Philly Cheesesteak. I had already gotten one from Dalessandro's......but one of my friends recommended Max's. The foodie in me couldn't say no. So I went. The ambiance is very casual, with indoor seating. But I took it to go. The service was pretty good. The cheesesteak was DIVINE! The portion was filling. I visited Max's this evening with some out of town family members there were 8 of us total 4 of them didn't drink but heard about the great steaks so they didn't visit the bar area. But the others did and they were treated disrespectfully by the bar made this evening which was Saturday JANUARY 10TH 2026 . I BELIEVE the bar person at that time name was KeKe not certain but she was rude and because one of our family members was sitting at the end of the bar she asked why as if it was an inconvenience for her to walk that far to set e him he said he waited approximately 10-15 minutes before she even reconized him or asked him want he wanted to drink as if it was a issue that she had to walk so far from the rest of the bar area where she seemed to have her particular people sitting and gave them more attention. Once 2 more of us arrived to the same end of the bar it was still a mess the service was not what we where used too especially at Max's even though it was only our 2nd time being there on a Saturday which we were informed was her usual day. Needless to say the rudeness and irritation by her continued she argued with another patron about his drink order, cursed that she did not have to F.....deal with another paying customer who was as also in the same area, and took order from 2 person shot was with his wife and took even longer after they paid for their drink to bring the change back uni she again attended to her patrons at the other end of the bar. She acted as if we were not even worth her time or our money was not the same color as her other patrons who she catered to for most of the evening we where there. Since I work for the City of Philadelphia I would say that this was a blatened sign of what people who visit our city say that Philadelphia is NOT a friendly place!!! Seems off the beaten path and not the typical places you hear about when you're visiting Philly and looking for a cheesesteak sandwich but don't let that deter you! First thing to note is that they are CASH ONLY. They have an ATM but I recommend bringing plenty of cash. Waiting area can get cramped when they are busy. It's pretty narrow so sometimes you might have to wait outdoors. These sandwiches are HEFTY! Check out my photos and videos. We stopped at Max's Broad and Germantown, local spot with a bar connected for spirits. The place was not crowded at all so we were able to place our order pretty quickly. Whatever you do, do not ask for everything on it...because the queation will be what's everything!!! BE CLEAR, and indicate by item what you want on your sandwich. If you can eat for three to four people by all means order the large....if however you cannot recommend the half. How do I know, I ordered the large. I was visiting from Texas and was told by multiple people that I NEEDED to try Max's, but specifically not to go at night. I stopped by shortly after 1pm, and there were only a few people ahead of us, so the wait wasn't bad. I ordered a large cheesesteak with onions and mayo. They cook unseasoned meat, so I highly recommend adding seasoning or condiments when they ask! The customer service wasn't bad, but they didn't put much effort into it. My husband went in to order a cheese steak and met with rude service. He couldn't really hear the people while they were trying to cook at the same time and the ordering wasn't streamlined. Regardless the price was good since it was $12 for a cheese steak and not like $20 like most other places. We took it home to eat for lunch. No cheese on mine but the meat should still shine (bars lol) The meat wasn't seasoned and it really thought it would be. Don't know if I needed to ask for more onions or what but I tried it on its own since this "half" was ginormous and there was plenty spilling out, which I loved. As an out of towner they were patient with the ordering process as myself and the person I was with were clueless, lol. You can tell they're used to being very fast-paced. We each ordered a different type of cheesesteak to try (I ordered one with chicken and my sister ordered one with steak). We split them both so we could try them. This could have been due to miscommunication, but they were just ok... when we ordered (and after we paid) they asked what toppings we wanted and advised that veggies are an extra cost. They could have advised this when they were taking the order... so we skipped as we were low on actual cash and didn't want to pay more ATM fees to take out more for two toppings (cash only establishment). I also could have used extra cheese for the cheesesteaks. Bartender was super friendly though. As stated before... yes, it's very 'hole in the wall.' However, the booths on the bar side are not ideal. You can barely fit in them and can feel every move the person sitting behind you is making. My sister and I are short and each weigh about 135lbs. The space between the seat and the table were so narrow that our 'you know what's' were basically sitting on the table with the table almost at each of our ribs. The food here is a 10 out of 10! Hands down the best cheesesteak I've ever had! Meat well seasoned plenty of toppings, the cheese whizz is perfection especially with the jalepenos legit couldn't have been better. The size of the cheese steak though is meant for two people unless you want it for lunch, snack and dinner lol. I was only able to eat 1/4 of the sandwich while my boyfriend downed half. The staff is very robotic, and the steak had no flavor it was so bland it was like the person who cooked it was just going through the motions. There was no kick to it. One of my friends had already eaten here and praised their sandwiches. The spot was a little out the way but very well worth the drive. We happened to visit here on Mother's day so there were no longggg lines. I was able to check out what was going on behind the counter and the young lady cooking was banging and clanging very loud. The restaurant has been featured on some of the Creed movies, and shows like this is us. It comes with a lot of hype and is a Philadelphia staple.
