I have not been here in years so we decided to go here for a Saturday night date. The resturaunt is located in a very historic building in Gloucester City and has great charm. They have their own dedicated parking lot caddy corner from the building. As you walk in, the entrance is in the bar area. It is an old style bar and has woodworking from the early 1900's. The dining room has natural brick walls and it's decorated simply so the ambiance here is excellent. This was the first place I had ever had Thai coconut mussels. I was young back then and hadn't yet opened my eyes to new food experiences or flavors. The waitress then talked me into it. I had been looking for that same flavor I received back then so we started with drinks and the Coconut Thai Mussels. My lovely date ordered the Pomegranate Martini and I had the apple cider Mule. Both were delicious. Her drink was poured table side from the bartender himself (who had to Come into the dining room) I'm sure because he wanted to get a second look at my beautiful date. My drink was brought to me by the teenage boy who was waiting on us, but who can blame the bartender, she did look amazing. Now for the Mussels, they lived up to my memory and expectations. They were an amazing experience of savory, sweet and spicy. The broth itself was worth going there alone. I could have drank it with a spoon..... I think I actually did. We had to order a second helping of bread to soak up that amazing deliciousness. The entrees came out and my date ordered the Steak Theresa, cooked rare in a mushroom Demi glaze with crabmeat, accompanied with garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus. The mushrooms seemed to be canned, not fresh and the Demi glaze was just okay. My entree was the stuffed flounder with vegetables and mashed potatoes. The flounder was tasty but the filling was just okay. The mashed potatoes were fine, seasoned well, but the vegetables were actually really good. Overall the drinks, appetizer and my date started the night off as a solid 5/5 stars, once the meals came out it dropped it down to a 3.5/ 5. The service was really good and so was the ambiance. If we had just gone for drinks and apps then it would have been a 5 star review. I would go back , but I would order something different next time or completely skip the entrees. My lovely lady loves her some chocolate, but the dessert menu didn't strike her interest so we called it a night.

I wish I could have tried their food. Made reservations on Open table for 5 Dec. 30, 2020 for 2pm. Received confirmation number mad when we went to the restaurant it was closed with no notice. Their sign out front said they are open at 11:30. Google said they are open 10:30am. Yelp said they were open at 2pm. Open table said they were open at 2pm. Their Facebook page said they were open at 2:30pm and their phone message said they open at 4pm. Which is it? Why was I allowed to confirm reservations at 2m? Sorry but in this day of 2020 going into 2021 restaurants need to be on social media and have their information accurate. There is no excuse. You will lose business.

A hidden gem. If you'd like a perfectly cooked and nicely served seafood meal, I heartily recommend Max's. We called last minute on Fathers Day and had the BEST meal ever!! Can't wait to go back.

Lobster, Crab and Artichoke Dip was wonderful.

Tonight we tried pudge's pub formerly Max's in Gloucester city…read more We were Max's fans for many years but towards the end just went for drinks because the food was continuously on a down hill track. Yes I was sad when I heard it sold but figured it only could go up... my main concern was that the decor and ambiance not be destroyed... well fear no longer it has not. The place is generally the same as it ever was. We were greeted immediately as we walked in the door and it was great to be in the familiar surroundings. The menu has change to reflect more of a bar food fare. Some Max's favorites are still available but the majority of the menu is bar food. Everything is reasonably priced. I missed the crab dip and crab cake sandwich. It's a Thursday night and there were only one couple at the bar, we chose to sit in the dining room because it was more comfortable for me. I chose the cheesesteak with provolone and fried onions (additional 50 cents) it came on a sesame seed roll that was very tasty. The roll stuffed with meat and was piping hot. The cheesesteak is award winning and their featured item. It was very good far from the best I ever tried but even furthest from the worst. Half of the sandwich came home with me, my appetite has not been great lately. I ordered onion rings which were quite good. Served hot and golden brown. Sue had the fish and chips which came with fries and Cole slaw. The fries were delicious no coating no old bay or other obnoxious seasoning. They were seasoned with salt perfectly. The fish was breaded and fried well and reportedly very tasty. We split a slice of carrot cake for dessert. It was very good, not the best carrot cake I've ever had but delicious none the less. Service was attentive, quick and courteous. It is not the max's that we fondly remembered but let's face it max's was not how we fondly remembered. I will admit that i was concerned about the lack of patrons but to be fair, it was Thursday, cold and still piles of snow on the ground from the last horrendous storm. In conclusion, this will not satisfy the hardcore max's devotee.... But if you want a new experience thats slightly more budget friendly you will not be disappointed. I dont believe they are having music consistently on Friday/saturday nights but if they did, with the right artists it may bring back those nights that are fondly missed. 4 stars because it was cold in the restaurant.

Chubby's is back--and it's better than ever…read more So glad to see Chubby's reopened in 2015 in Gloucester City, NJ. This is the return of the original Chubby's that longtime locals remember from nearby (1933 by Joseph "Chubby" Stafford), and it absolutely lives up to the legacy. The food is classic steakhouse done right--excellent cuts, cooked perfectly, with that old-school steakhouse flavor you just don't find everywhere anymore. Everything came out hot, fresh, and exactly as ordered. Service was outstanding as well: attentive, friendly, and professional without being overbearing. You can tell the staff takes pride in what they're doing, which really elevates the whole experience. If you were a fan of the original Chubby's, you'll feel right at home. And if you're new, this is easily one of the better steakhouses in the area. Welcome back, Chubby's--you were missed.

My steak was cooked perfect as was my wife's. Our sides came out and were also delicious. In my opinion this place is far better than the famous place in pensauken on every level especially quality. It's a little bit expensive here but who cares it's well worth it. If you like a good steak that doesn't need to be hidden by gimmicks and outrageous menu items and can stand on its own this is your place !

The ambiance is perfect for a ladies' night, date night, or even a reservation for a larger group. The entrées were delicious, authentic, fresh, and beautifully presented. We had the lamb chops and the cod, and both were excellent. The fresh natural limeade was also very refreshing. The owners, chef, and staff were polite, friendly, and professional. However, we also ordered their highly recomended chicken mofongo and.. it was not good at all. For one, for the amount of actual food you get it is NOT worth $27. Lets get that out of the way right off the bat. Dish is highly overpriced. The chicken was VERY dry. Like, need to take a sip of a drink every single bite dry. That alone made the dish bad, but then we tried the rest and it was bland and also.. dry? idk, dish wasn't good at all . Very overpriced, and I would never get or recommend someone order that ever again. Another minor issue, on their take out menue they have a bunch of coupons. One was for $5 off orders over $30 or something like that. i asked to use it, despite there being an expiration date of 12/31/25 on it. I figure, 'you're putting these out still, so you must still be honoring this coupon, right?" NO. The host asked a manager and they said they "shouldn't have put those menus out.' But you did.. so you honor the coupon. That's business 101. Fair, I guess? But just for some business advise.. it's $5 off for a first time customer that would have potentially come back and even told others to do so. Not now though. This was a take out experience, so I cannot comment on how it is if you order in the restaurant. i will say that the hostess/ girl at the counter was very nice, and accommodating though.
