Food: I've gotten lots of different things on the menu at Maxine's. The pancake is really good and it is the size of your plate. The whipped butter is also amazing. I've also had the French toast, which is probably one of my favorite things there. The (pecan) waffle is also a highlight, even though I don't usually like waffles, but I like this one. The sausage links are my favorite protein there. Even though the omelet is a popular choice, it's personally not my favorite. Over all food is 9/10 Service: All the waitresses are friendly and you get your food fairly quickly. I love that they all wear matching T-shirts. 8/10 Ambience: it's a little old fashioned but that adds to its charm. It very much gives classic diner feel. They have booths and tables and also a counter. 8/10 Over all: maxine's is definitely a Rice Lake staple and serves delicious food no matter what you order. I was visiting the area and my MIL insisted we go to Maxine's. It was busy for a weekday. I don't believe there are many comparable options in Rice Lake. They serve like 3 variations of country fried steak. I chose the benny variety, my husband the sandwich. Both were good. Something I've definitely enjoyed in Vegas restaurants too. The pancakes are huge, but nothing special. I found the whole menu decent, but not notable by any means. The waitress and staff were very kind, as usual for the midwest. I was too embarrassed to ask for new silverware since mine were dirty. Lackluster diner with midwestern hospitality and average breakfast. I give it 4 stars since it probably is the best in the area. read more

At the same time was able to meet the legendary matriarch and owner "Maxine" she greeted me while having breakfast and offered anything else to compliment breakfast she asked if I was visiting and I shared that I was and from California. First off this is definitely small town America in the best way possible. Warm, friendly, and welcoming! Small cafe diner with great ambiance. Even meet Maxine herself when she came by to ask how everything was. Maxine and her staff are above and beyond 5 stars. I ordered Philly omelette with sourdough and hash browns. The omelette was outstanding and the only reason we dropped to 4stars was more of a personal preference on the hash browns. Great Diner! This place was GREAT! As we sought the place out using our Google app, the smell got us first! I had no idea it was this place we were about to dine! There were 3 of us so I ordered the chopped steak breakfast plate which came with eggs, hashbrowns and toast, one of us ordered the chicken fried steak with eggs and hashbrowns, and the last ordered a half order of eggs Benedict with English muffins! Don't let that pic on here of the chicken fried steak fool ya, it took up the whole plate! Everything was just great and I would definitely come back!! FYI. If you want a real, made from scratch, breakfast; you would be well-served to check out Maxine's. While the restaurant isn't large and isn't fancy, it serves good food at decent prices. Our party was welcomed by Maxine. A very nice lady, she was proud to tell us she has had the restaurant for 33 years. In my mind, it says she has obviously been doing it right for a long time. The omelettes were large and filled full with fresh cut ingredients. The hash browns were clearly made from fresh cut potatoes and were done crispy, as ordered. The pancakes were as big as the dinner plate they arrived on. Perfectly cooked and tasting great, they were a meal in themselves. Our group had the meat lovers and western omelette and a two egg breakfast plate. Two of three (all big eaters) brought a box of leftovers home. I'm looking forward to a return trip to Maxine's when visiting Rice Lake. read more

Delicious food! Huge portions. Low prices. I had the everything omelette with a pancake. The pancake was as big as the plate. Couldn't finish pancake and didn't even touch the omelette or hash browns until I got home ( got those to-go). My son loved the kids mini cheeseburger and fries. And an order of the kids pancakes. He ate all of his food except 1 pancake. My son is picky, so if he eats most of his food, means he thoroughly enjoyed what he ate. The only downside to my meal was the hash browns. They were NOT crispy like most places make them. And very bland flavor even with onions. But that won't stop my 5-star rating. I'll be back for sure. read more

Stopped to eat lunch there on the way back from Silver Bay Mn to Paris Tn. The shrimp i had were the best tasting I have ever had in my entire 85 yrs . Even though there was a full house the food was quickly delivered by a very friendly and efficient waitress. If ever i'm up that way again will definitely stop by for lunch. read more

We are new to the area and asked where to find great breakfast. I'm so happy we were referred to Maxine's! The service, atmosphere, and food were all phenomenal. Honestly I was astonished at how many egg options they offer, and I went for the poached and they were perfect! Their potatoes were crunchy! Tea was fresh! My hubby and I both opted for the Chicken Fried Steak. My 4yr old ate every bite of her pancake and sausage and that tells me one thing, it was good! Can't wait to visit again! I love Maxine's! We take all por out of town guests there. The owner is such a nice person and all the employees are always so great when we are in there. I LOVE the cheesey hash browns and pancakes. It can get pretty busy on Saturday and Sunday mornings sos plan accordingly! They accept credit cards now too which is nice so I don't need to use cash. Good prices too. The breakfast place most highly recommended by locals. Burgers look good, too. Eggs perfect, sausage and bacon good, hot tea perfect. Pancakes huge. They only take cash, open till 1 :30pm Side note: Biscuits are soft and NOT 'short and crispy-edged" like my Southern grandma's. The gravy is slightly sweet vs herby and sausage flavored, although it has sausage in it. Flavor is good, just know it is a different thing than your usual biscuit and gravy. read more

What a cute little place!! Passed though Rice Lake for a wedding, stopped here for a quick heading out of town breakfast. I pretty much only consume eggs Benedict when eating breakfast out, so they have to be good. These, were quite possibly the best I have had in a long time. The eggs were perfect. Yolk was runny, but the whites were cooked through. Which I have found in my extensive eggs benny research, is hard to do. The English muffins were actually toasted through - which I love. And as I drink my coffee black, I was thoroughly pleased by the pot they left on the table. We got to meet Maxine herself, who walked over and gave us all hugs at the table. She's a doll. Maxine has built the best breakfast destination in Rice Lake over the past 25 years, and her Bissonette family offspring is continuing the tradition, with daughter Debbie coordinating the dining room and grandson Bryan running the kitchen. Every time we are in rice lake, Maxine's is our go to breakfast/brunch spot. Everything on the menu is reasonably priced. Their homemade chili, potato salad (seasonal), and eggs Benedict are family favorites. The service is also delightful, and on many days, you can chat with the darling Maxine herself. Used to be good and looked forward to breakfast here. Friendly and warm. Recently began to go downhill. Inattentive waitstaff when it is busy probably due to being understaffed. You'd think a place like this being around as long as it's been would know when they'd be busy. Was ignored/forgotten about while other tables arriving after me were taken care of, putting orders in. No apology or anything; just a frustrated look. My advice-if there's more than 1 car in the parking lot, go elsewhere. Otherwise they'll be too busy. read more
