Maximo was definitely one of the highlights of our Mexico City trip! Loved the vibes and wine glasses were super unique. We loved the daily menus and the variety. Instead of getting the tasting we got many dishes to share and loved them all. House bread with the roasted eggplant dip was great. The octopus ceviche with mole and guacomole was great too. We especially loved the tempura soft shell crab with a mexican twist / flavor to it. We also really liked the jamon iberico which was a large generous portion. The roasted baby corn that everyone talked about was great though I didn't think this was the highlight of the meal. And lastly the oxtail pappardelle which left us stuffed. Definitely worth visiting and deserving of their 1 star!

Great dinner for our party of 8 for dinner. Overall, the dishes were pretty solid. Main disappointment was the service - kinda felt they were just throwing dishes at us to finish. Drinks were good, ambiance is stunning as the interior is wide grand and spacious. Wouldn't come again for dinner. Lunch, maybe.

I tried this place during my first time visiting Mexico City because it was on all the lists of fine dining restaurants to try. The ambience was very romantic and the service was attentive, definitely worthy of a fancy date night. However, the food was a little disappointing given how highly this place is rated. My husband and I shared two appetizers and two entrées. The entrées impressed, but the apps missed their mark. The octopus "ceviche" consisted of tender octopus but lacked flavor. The stone crab and mole verde "tlayuda" barely had any stone crab at all. But the Wagyu Cross beef tongue and beef cheeks were super tender and full of flavor. They made up for the slightly disappointing apps. The staff was very nice though and even treated us to a glass of Prosecco since we were celebrating our anniversary. I'd still recommend this place for anyone looking for a fine dining experience in Mexico City, but I wouldn't come back considering there are so many new restaurants every day. A la mexicana octopus "ceviche", tostadas and guacamole 7/10 Stone crab and mole verde "tlayuda" 7/10 Beer braised Wagyu Cross beef tongue, homemade mole, beluga lentils, pickled onion 9/10 Red wine braised Wagyu Cross beef cheek, risotto with parmesan 10/10

We went to several incredible Michelin star restaurants during our trip to Mexico City, but, in the end, Maximo was our favorite meal of the whole weekend. The design of the restaurant is such a vibe and the food was really next level. We had a 7:15 reservation on Saturday night and were taken to our booth at the back of the restaurant upon arrival. My husband ordered the espresso martini based on online reviews and I ordered my standard drink, tequila neat. He said that the martini was perfectly made and I was surprised and delighted that my tequila came with a side of fresh homemade sangrita. For food, we ordered a bunch of things to share. Everything looked good but we ended up with the roasted beets, tuna and kampachi sashimi, roasted leeks, tagliatelle with oxtail ragu, sweet potato and ricotta agnolotti, roasted chicken and the filet. I legitimately cannot choose a favorite bite because each dish was as good as the next. For dessert we had the French toast and the truffle ice cream. The only dish I would comfortably say you could pass on is the truffle ice cream. It was creamy and delicious but didn't taste much like truffle. Make a reservation at Máximo asap, I promise you won't regret it!

I have been eating like a king in Mexico City. The food so far has been incredible and I crown Mexico City in the Sunil list of food cities in the top 3. This spot is No.43 Latin America's 50 Best Restaurants 2024 and also made popular by Anthony Bourdain. Another incredible meal, everything we ate looked like a work of art and tasted like ambrosia.

Our favorite meal in Mexico City. So good - as soon as you walk in, the ambiance is incredible and the food matches! Everything was delicious, from the complimentary bread with the super tasty eggplant dip, to the cheesecake for dessert (seriously the best cheesecake I've ever had). We almost went back again the next night just because of how much we enjoyed it. A must-do!!

Maximo wasn't on my radar until a gf made reservations - and it was one of our top meals during our four-night visit to CDMX. The restaurant has a lot of neutral colors with a modern, clean, and earthy design - and plants that makes you feel like you're in an atrium. We went for lunch - I looooove a long and fancy lunch! We started with artisan bread and butter, lunch wines (they don't have rose, but we did find an funky orange wine that was great!). Our table of four was hungry, so we opted for a la carte dining (there is a 9 c-course tasting menu, too), listed in order of my favorites from top to a-okay: + Kampachi and tuna sashimi, soy and ginger vinaigrette, and matcha $670 + Roasted beets, organic apple vinaigrette, Celaya goat cheese $429 + Stone crab and mole verde "tlayuda", shiso guacasalsa $540 + Roasted baby corn, hollandaise, parmesan $594 + Caesar salad, head cheese $540 My dining companions also took part in: + A la mexicana octopus "ceviche", tostadas and guacamole $570 + Wagyu cross beef cheeseburger $640 You can book reservations by OpenTable or phone: https://www.maximobistrot.com.mx/en/reservations/

Because Anthony "Tony" Bourdain raved on and on about this place in the book "World Travel: An Irreverent Guide" published by his long-time assistant Laurie Woolever, I knew I had to go and relive oh-may-he-rest-in-peace-Tony's glory. We also desayuno-ed at Lalo! (Chef Eduardo Garcia Guzman's casual breakfast joint) so we came in with high expectations... luckily Maximo did not disappoint! Upon the long entrance we got to see their well-oiled inner working of a machinery - the kitchen was visible through a giant pane of glass. You could the chefs and sous chef collaborating, carefully crafting each meal together. We got seated in the middle where long padded seats were divided by a row of potted plants. I noticed that the restaurant space was created by adding some curved tin roof with glass enclosure over two sets of walls from neighboring buildings, how clever! The high vaulted ceiling made the place feel grand and lofty, but with landscape tapestry hanging on the walls and softly lit candles the environment could not be more inviting. At first we got nervous when the server only brought over the drink menu but not the food menu. My husband anxiously whispered if we were in for a $$$$$ tasting menu unbeknownst to us? I responded with a wide-eyed shrug. Our fears quickly dissipated once our server returned with our cocktails and the food menu in tow. We commenced with the soft shell crab tempura tlayuda. Very fresh with surprising picante note when we least expected it. And forget the fork and knife our attentive server brought - it was easier to use our hands. Oh and let me tell you about those baby corn dusted with shaved Parmesan in a bed of hollandaise sauce that tasted like roasted butterscotch. Holy cow that suave changed my life forever. I want to dip EVERYTHING in that hollandaise sauce. I want to swim in it. I want to take it home and sleep in it. Or on it. Or drown it. Whichever takes place first. Next came the tagliatelle with oxtail sauce which was deep and umami. My husband also ordered the Wagyu burger and damn it worried every pretty penny. The burger meat was grilled to medium rare and then layered with thin slices of pickled onion, lettuce, and oozing cheese, then sandwiched between a pair of beautifully toasted pretzel buns. The texture and the mouthfeels lit up parts of my brain I didn't know existed. The mashed potato side dish was a surprise hit too. Wow wow wee wow, how in the world do they not have a Michelin Star? My snotty I've-been-to-a-3-Michelin-starred-restaurant-in-Paris husband thought Maximo ought to deserve one. Excellent service and everyone there spoke better English than our broken Dora-the-explorer Spanish. Dress up or dress down, this place welcomes all. Bravo Lalo!

Reservations recommended for all fine dine in CDMX and this one is no exception. You'd see literally no spots if you book a week prior. We made one for the opening afternoon slot. This was our first dining experience in cdmx. They opened a bit later and were also a bit disorganized. Food takes a bit to come. Apart from this, everything else was positive. The space is vibey yet bright. Located by the main street. They've a la carte and a tasting menu. We tried two beverages and two appetizers only. The scallop ceviche was mind altering because I never could have imagined liking scallops that too raw! The baby corn dish made my babycorn hating partner fall in love with the veg. I wish we had time to go in for an entire experience but highly recommend. Maybe go in for not the opening spots but a bit after (1.30 pm or 7pm).

It was not bad but feel like those hyped up tourist spot. Mostly tourist. Good but also very European, may not be a necessary stop for those who's only here for a short time. Tried the Octopus Ceviche because everyone raved about it but it was okay, not the freshest, but braised well so it's tender. Softshell Crab Tlayuda took a while but very good, love it. Cocktails were just fine, on the lighter side. Maybe stick with wine?

Hands down the best restaurant in mexico city! I fear i might book a flight once just to go back to Maximo. The staff were helpful and attentive. We tried to order light but the menu was so promising that we caved and once again ordered too much- a sacrifice I'll gladly make over and over again! i love their plates and decor, everything was so clean. Now lets get to the best part, the food: we ordered a la mexicana octopus "ceviche", penshell scallops aguachiles, roasted baby corn and the wood grilled wagyu cross beef burger! honestly all the plates are unique and bursting in flavors.

Excellent, fine dining French Mexican meal in a beautiful, open, and intimate low-lit setting. We opted to order off the a-la-carte menu, and most memorable for our table were the gooseneck barnicles "aguachile" appetizer (we've never seen barnicles on a menu before, and they were deliciously prepared) and the seared red snapper entree, which was delicately cooked with a fantastic bouillabaisse sauce. For desserts, we tried the unique goat cheese ice cream with phyllo, guava, and olive oil. If you're not a fan of strong goat cheese flavor, you may want to skip this one. It's an interesting combination of savory, sweet, creamy, and crunchy flavors, but my group was divided on whether they liked it or not. Our server was lovely - he primarily only spoke Spanish but still tried his best to communicate with us in English. When our meal was winding down, he recommended different types of tequila and we chose one of his recommendations. Unfortunately as the staff was clearing away plates, my husband accidentally spilled his tequila over as he was picking up a dish. I was just slightly hoping the server would offer us a bit of tequila again (knowing that it was an accident when cleaning up), but they did not. We know it was our fault, but just a bummer that almost the entire tequila was spilled.
Visited this popular restaurant while on vacation in Mexico City after seeing Chef Lalo on a food show with Eva Longoria. As you walk into the entrance there is a window showing the meat fridge and also the open kitchen and then you continue into this high ceiling restaurant that is modeled after Chef Lalo's experience living in Ohio. The food is French-Mex cuisine with fresh ingredients sourced from farms in Xochimilco. My wife had the most amazing squash soup of the day and we couldn't stop raving about her Spaghetti Lobster. The cheesecake was equally outstanding and this place is a definite must try whenever in Mexico City! read more

I was looking forward to coming here and made reservations well in advance. To start, I had the onion appetizer. It resembled the flavor of French onion soup, and it was perfectly complemented by the flakiest and most delicious roll I've ever tasted. The Caesar salad was crisp and refreshing, with just the right amount of tanginess in the dressing. It was evident that only the freshest ingredients were used. For the main course, both the bolognese and the chicken breast exceeded my expectations. The bolognese was rich and flavorful, while the chicken breast was unbelievably juicy and tender. Now, let's talk about the michelada--it was hands down one of the best I've ever had. Lemony, salty, with just the right amount of heat, it was the perfect accompaniment to my meal. The ambiance of the restaurant was pleasant, with cozy lighting and comfortable seating. However, I couldn't help but notice that everyone was speaking English. Not a complaint, just an observation. Overall, my visit to this restaurant was nothing short of great. The combination of fresh and delicious flavors, paired with exceptional service, makes it a must-visit for any food enthusiast. I'll definitely be returning! read more

Beyond incredible - one of our favorite places we at the whole trip. Every appetizer, dish and desert we had was exceptional. Also getting to peek into the kitchen on the way in was fun! Ambiance is beautiful. read more
Walking into the cavernous restaurant, the space is modern, trendy and decorated with impressively tall candles that bring a warmth. To start, the bread is complimented with a surprisingly delicious spread of eggplant, olive oil and other ingredients. We ordered a cocktail that was delicious as well as one of their flavorful kombuchas. For our meal, we split the lamb birria, which is not to be missed, as well as the octopus ceviche. All of the food was delicious, and it's clear why the restaurant has the reputation it does. A worthwhile stop in a city full of delicious restaurants. read more

The best meal I had in Mexico City. The setting is beautiful and the food is superb. Highly recommend the kampachi and sweet onion dip starters. The tagliatelle and ravioli pastas were wonderful. The beek cheeks so tender. Out of this world delicious. If you are able to get a reservation here, please do. You won't regret it. read more

It's been a long time since I visited a restaurant like Maximo, where the atmosphere, the service and above all the food, are an unforgettable experience. From the cocktails without liquor, the appetizers, of which we ordered a mexicaba-style octopus ceviche, the porcini fig soup, roasted corn, risotto, tagliatelle, red cheek and wagyu flat iron, and all abs or litamemte everything is spectacular! exceeded all my expectations..

Fantastic dining experience. Great food, mostly great portions, incredible service, and good lively ambiance. Definitely recommend. Tasting menu is offered, but we enjoying ordering a la carte for half the price and still left the restaurant stuffed. read more

I would give it zero if I could. The food was fine, didn't blow me away BUT what made this a horrific experience was the waiter (service is general was absolutely terrible) called my husband a racist slur multiple times. i didn't find out until the day after because my husband is a gentleman or I wouldn't have paid. the next day I reached out and they basically said, yeah that sucks but we aren't comping your meal and "you said the food was great" I asked for the GM and they never responded after that. I fully understand being frustrated by American tourists but we are not those people, we have lived in MX and are always very respectful of the culture and spaces we are in. my husband is Asian American and being called something I won't repeat multiple times is disgraceful, the response from them made it even worse. read more

Food was ok. We were seated at the back by where all the servers were walking and it was very distracting. Very disappointed that they first brought in the wrong bill and then corrected it but then double charged us for both bills.... grrrrrrr! We have opened a dispute with the credit card company. Like the other reviews say... we came here due to the hype. Unfortunately it didn't live up to it. I guess we should know better by now. read more

The atmosphere is great. Cocktails were top notch. The Chicken dish was great. The Wagyu Ribeye was minuscule! Lobster Tartar and Sashimi appetizers were great. French toast dessert was great. Service seemed unorganized and we rarely saw our original waiter. Would we return, probably not. read more
Making reservations for this place was a bit of a headache but this was by far hands down the best meal we had in CDMX. We dined at Quintonil but preferred the food here way more and it was a lot cheaper here. We had a big party so they told us the only option we had was to do family style and they would just bring dishes out for us. This actually turned out to be a great idea because we didn't have to decide what to order. The amount of food they bought out for our table was the perfect amount. The fresh bread is soooo good! read more

My husband and i's favorite stop during our CDMX trip. We had the scallop tostada, mushroom soup, bbq fried chicken, baby corn, and the waygu tongue. Everything so tasty and beautifully presented! The scallop tostada was my favorite! It comes with an avocado and hot salsa dip that you spread on the tostada first.. amazing! My husbands favorite was the waygu! He was so full but still wanted more! Great service! Israel was our server and excellent! So kind to us as English speakers as well. We will definitely be back! Beautiful setting which created great ambiance read more
Where do I even begin? My friend that has been living in CDMX for quite some time recommended Máximo to me and was by far my best meal in CDMX, maybe even one of my best on my trip. You can't go wrong with just about anything on the menu but don't skip over anything that I ordered. Kampachi laminado was to die for, super full of flavor. Tostada was amazing as well, I've never had anything like it in my life. We almost didn't order a Plato fuerte (large plate) Pulpo and I am so glad that we did because it was it was one of my Favorites. DON'T SKIP DESSERT. Chocolate caviar dessert with that freaking pepper ice cream. Wow. Flavors so well combined I was sent to heaven. Also, service was 10/10. Go for lunch, you're going to want to save this as your big meal and then go for a walk after. I cant wait to come back soon !! read more

What a trendy, true farm-to-table restaurant serving French plates made with Mexican-grown ingredients. Reservations are a must--Máximo Bistrot doesn't have many seats nor a bar to sit at while waiting for a table. Reserve on open table ahead of time! Loved the crowd that gathered here in the dimly lit place: a mix of local Mexican businessmen grabbing drinks to local couples meeting for a date night to tourists. Dishes to order: 1. Risotto con trufa blanca. (Creamy risotto that melts in your mouth, with an additional added bonus flavor of truffle) 2.Pechuga de pollo organico rellena de cuitlacoche. (I've never had a chicken that was perfectly cooked. I'll dream about this chicken for months! It was crispy on the outside with perfectly cooked meat on the inside.) read more

Came here because of all the hype (world's best 50, Netflix show etc.). First time (01/2022) it was disappointing. Had to come again 10 months later to give it a second shot. Still, unfortunately I don't think it lives up to the hype. In sum this place would be a regular $60pp restaurant in the US, but could easily cost you $100pp+ in CDMX where restaurants are generally half the price compared to the US. Service: everything was fine, until servers started removing our unfinished plates. I tried to stop them but apparently most of them did not understand English and were too focused on racing to get plates off our table. Drink: ordered Corn Martini but could not taste any corn in it. All liquor. Food: I can feel the chef tried really hard to make everything "fine-dining"-like, by using lots of sauces, purées, foams with each dish. But overall it just felt like a hodgepodge of colors and a dissonance of flavors. Honestly could not remember anything from our meal since every di flavor was quite mediocre. read more
We went to Maximo Bistrot on the 1st day of my visit to mexico city. Note to future visitors: reservations are a must, as the place tends to fill up quickly. The airy and beautifully decorated space exudes a welcoming charm, complemented by ample natural light. The service was exceptional from start to finish - attentive without being intrusive. We ordered following things 1) Toasted Celery Root Soup: A surprising delight. The soup was earthy, beautifully seasoned, and downright tasty. A perfect starter that set the tone for the rest of the meal. 2) Organic Chicken Liver Parfait and Foie Gras, Brioche: Indulgence at its finest. The parfait boasted a rich and creamy texture, with a delightful earthiness and gamey undertone. The brioche was fluffy, perfect companion, adding a delightful contrast to the decadence. 3) Octopus Ceviche: Words fall short to describe the brilliance of this dish. The presentation was a work of art, and the octopus, incredibly tender. Each bite melted in the mouth, and the accompanying guacamole and tostadas were a perfect complement, enhancing the overall experience. 4) Mixed Green Salad: A refreshing palate cleanser. The salad struck the right balance with just the perfect amount of dressing, providing a delightful acidity. The greens were fresh, crisp, and a testament to the restaurant's commitment to quality ingredients. In summary, this restaurant is a must-visit for those seeking a memorable dining experience in Mexico City. From the warm ambience to the expertly crafted dishes, every element contributes to an unforgettable culinary journey. read more

Beautiful place and amazing food. This is ine of the best restaurant in Mexico city. We order the agua chile, the rib eye, calamares, we eat so great, if you can only pick one place ti eat in Mexico city go to this place. read more
Bottom line: great drinks, excellent service, FLAMEY STRAIGHT FIRE BITES. Vibez: when you approach the entrance you only get a glimpse of the dinning room, but can see the natural light and greenery. As you walk in look left and you see the kitchen where the magic happens. Nice touch, see the kitchen first. Small host stand, nice couch waiting area. you can get your drink while you wait. Staff is plentiful, knowledgeable, friendly. When you're seated you'll feel the energy of eating outside, but you're inside. Wild, but loved it. Bathroom: H for men, M for woman. Don't be a clown and go in the wrong bathroom. Bathroom lighting is functional but not too bright. Urinals we're tasteful. Stalls were inviting. Two sinks, manual functionality. Fancy single use towels, no hand dryer. Food: we agreed to let the waiter bring whatever he wanted family style for our group of 8. Best decision we made all night. Everything we ate was great and next level. Nothing was just your standard, always a special touch. We had 15 dishes, but best items, not in any order: wagyu tomahawk - cut like butter, melted in mouth, fire experience. Pasta dish was a surprise treat - noodles were perfect, sauce was a fatty indulgence that said, f it, I'm going for it tonight. Octopus tar tar was a fresh treat that was straight FLAMEY FIRE. Drinks: don't under estimate the cocktails before you get wine. read more

Lived up to the hype! Came to Mexico City for a little foodie vacation and this was one of our stops. Super cool atmosphere - pretty attentive staff. The quality of the food was fantastic. We don't speak Spanish so maybe things got lost in translation- but the appetizer portions were extremely generous despite the staff suggesting they were "small" - so you could make a tapas style meal on just those..... Highly recommended read more

From the flatware to napkins, which are hand sewn in Oaxaca, to the seasonally rotating menu- Máximo focuses on local and artisanal. The menu is meant to be shared but I think you can enjoy it either way. The food was excellent! Our group three ordered to share, which I enjoyed because it allowed for tasting more dishes. They start you off with house baked sourdough bread that was perfection. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. It was served with a roasted eggplant and goat cheese purée. Delicious! To drink we started with the Mezcalina. If you like Mezcal, you will love this drink! It's mezcal with fresh strawberry and orange muddled with chile. It was balanced and the strawberry made its way through the Mezcal making for a refreshing and fun cocktail to drink! We drank red the rest of the night. The wine list is very interesting and global. To eat we shared: Octopus Ceviche a la Mexicana. Stone crab tostada with heirloom beans, garnished with salsa, radish and avocado crema. Scallop aguachile served with blue corn tostadas. Risotto with smoked mushrooms and black truffle Seared Duck breast Suckling pig taco (taco de lechon). Standout dishes were the Crab Tostada, the Scallop Aguachile and the taco de lechon. Everything was cooked beautifully, but those were my personal favorites. Reservations are a must! read more

We had dinner last night at Maximo and were looking forward to having the cheeseburger, which is reportedly so amazing that they run out of it during the night. We had an early res (by CDMX standards) at 7:30, but were told there were no more burgers. Oh well. That happens. We had a delicious and enjoyable meal in a great space for 2 hours and then started seeing cheeseburgers being served at tables around us. We asked and were told that people reserve the burgers during the day. A very poor system (I've never heard of it anywhere) that ends up confusing people, making customers feel deprived, and leaves a bad taste in what would have been a lovely evening. read more

Restaurant is pretty with a nice ambiance. I ordered an appetizer and an entree for myself and left stuffed. The onion appetizer was very delicious and came with a side of flaky bread, almost like a croissant, that ended up being the perfect accompaniment. The chicken breast entree was just okay. The quality of the chicken seemed as if it could have been better. I recommend trying one of thebother proteins on the menu. read more
Maximo was wonderful! The food, cocktails, and ambiance was amazing!! We ordered the sweet onions cooked in whey (12/10 ABSOLUTELY AMAZING DISH HOLY FRICK). Tagliatelle, and cauliflower. They also provide bread with a great blackened spread. Lastly, ordered the macadamia mai tai which was one of the best cocktails I've had so far in CDMX. Because of the sweet onions in whey and cocktail I had to give this place 5/5. If you come here MAKE sure you order these two items at the very least, you will not regret it! read more
A lot of people recommended Maximo Bistro during our CDMX visit, so we made a lunch reservation here. The food was delicious! but I thought just ok for the price we paid. It's more of a New American style restaurant, with mexican flavors and ingredients. All their food is fresh and their menu changes daily based on what is available. They offer a tasting menu if you prefer, but we just decided to order off the menu based on suggestions. Since we were full of tacos and hadn't had any vegetables, we ordered the mixed green salad. We also got the octopus ceviche (whom so many yelpers recommended!), the tuna sashimi, and sea bass. Our waiter was very helpful and kind to us. They start you off with crusty bread and a smoky eggplant dip. I really enjoyed the charcoal grey colored dip! It was very interesting Beware that they tend to not give you the next dish until you are finished with one.. so if you'd like them to bring out more than one at a time, I suggest you let them know. otherwise you'll be waiting FOREVER. Also, in general we found that meals are paced rather slowly in Mexico City especially at the nicer restaurants. So plan for at least a 1-1.5 hour lunch - Tuna sashimi: Tuna was very fresh, but nothing special - Mixed greens: probably one of my favorites of the meal! I loved the butter lettuce and there was small thin slices of apple that added a refreshing bite. The dressing was delicious and I always love fresh parm on my salad - Sea bass: nicely cooked and yummy flavors! the sunchokes were pureed into a mash/thick sauce that paired well with the fish - Octopus ceviche: it was good, but not very memorable. The tortilla chips it came with were very bland.. which I actually liked! so it didn't take away from the ceviche flavors It was a good restaurant to try and a unique place! but I'd rather try others if I only had a few days in the city read more

We were left pretty confused with our experience. We had high expectations. Long story short, the service was bad. We ordered drinks and didn't get them for a while. After a long wait, we asked if we could at least get a menu to look at, and they explained that the menu comes out with the drinks. This system might make sense if drinks came out quicker. After that, the service went downhill...it was hard to get our waiters attention to order food and a second drink. It only improved after I mentioned the slow service to one of the workers (the guys with the blazers). Most of the food was great. We ordered the aguachile, kampachi, pasta and steak. Everything was delicious except for the steak was overcooked. Again, we left confused. Perhaps it was because we experienced the superb service at Contramar for lunch and Maximo didn't even come close. We also heard that Maximo was snubbed for a Michelin star, so were pretty surprised to receive service that is on par with an average US restaurant. Maybe it was an off night? Who knows... read more
Amazing. We were somewhat hesitant to come here, given that it's a French restaurant in a place where that kind of food isn't going to be the priority, but I'm glad we did. Everything we got was excellent, and it was the perfect vibe for my wife. (For what it's worth, a lot of people label this place as French/Mexican fusion, but we found it to be far more French than Mexican.) First visit, we got the mushroom soup, stone crab tostada, sweet onions with whey/comte/pepper (somewhat resembling a French onion soup), ravioli with morels and beef, and duck breast, followed by the chocolate/macademia tarte for dessert. We enjoyed everything, but the ravioli really stood out to me, as did the duck. I'd probably get the onion dish again too (it seems like it's one of their few staples). Overall, an amazing meal, and well worth the visit. read more

the food, ambiance, and service at máximo bistrot were absolutely mind blowing. as a server myself and a--let's say financially up-and-coming--musician, i think i can count my fine dining experiences on one hand. my partner and i booked our table a week or two in advance and i'm glad we did: when we booked for our trip, there were only 2 time slots left. every single thing we ordered was delicious and tastefully, creatively presented. i genuinely got emotional because i felt so thankful to eat such a delicious meal, with such amazing service, in this beautiful country, across from someone i love. we ate the steak with potato puree, the chicken liver pate, and the oxtail pasta, and i can't say which was my favorite bc it was all so amazing. the pasta really stood out. i didn't catch our server's name but i want to shout out Ana, who was so kind and genuinely interested in how we liked our food!! i could relate to her warmth and it made me feel even more compelled to want to come back (and tell all my friends back home). máximo bistrot may be a fine dining establishment, but it isn't snooty; it's just completely cool. read more
Of all the meals I had in CDMX, this was by far the most overrated and least memorable. I felt like I was eating California style cuisine but less fresh and not as flavorful. I would say that the tlayuda is one of the worst ones I have ever had. The squid is pretty good and the cocktail I had also did not disappoint, but I definitely entered this establishment with higher expectations. There are so many good places in CDMX. We had a great dinning experience at Maximo. All the food was amazing. I thought the tostada was the best appetizer and my tagliatelle was amazing. The drinks were delicious. The only thing that could be better for a restaurant of this status are the chairs. They were not comfortable chairs and you expect comfortable chairs for the price of the meals. I also thought all the meals could have been brought out at the same time and not one by one every minute. Overall, it's a great restaurant with amazing food. read more

Short version: Maximo Bistrot should be embarrassed. In a city with so many great restaurants, do not eat here. The food and service are disgusting. Maximo has a great reputation but that must be prior to moving into a new location. We ordered the tasting menu and left before getting all of the courses because of how bad the food and service were. Waiters brought us stuff we didn't order, didn't bring us stuff we did order, and brought us items out of order while saying they were extra courses. What a complete s***show. The porcini mushroom soup couldn't decide whether it was a cream or broth soup. The potatoes and mushrooms were raw. Why does the tasting menu have two scallop dishes and why were they served back to back? The sea bass was bland with oily skin and mushy. That's when we decided we had enough of this prison food. It doesn't help that the waiters are literally dressed like prison guards. The waitstaff is utterly untrained and has no idea what's going on or what they are serving. The first two dishes were brought out in a timely manner but then every thing just halted. We simply stopped receiving our courses without explanation or any interaction from the wait staff. There are just too many good restaurants in this city to give Maximo a chance. For your own sake, do not eat here. read more
I had heard from many foodies that this was comparable to Pujol. Maybe they were strictly speaking of their tasting menu because I was hugely disappointed in their to-order menu. We started with the crab and mole verde tlayuda which was ok but we didn't taste any crab. The mole completely overpowered the subtle flavor of the crab. We also had the BBQ fried organic chicken which was delicious, packed with flavor and juicy. Definitely my favorite of the night. The red wine braised beef cheek was so delicate, you didn't even need a knife (or teeth) to eat it. The wine sauce was too reduced and strong. It made taking more than 3 bites almost nauseating. Don't get me wrong, the flavor was good, but too strong. It would have made a good sauce for an amuse but not for a full dish. The $60 Wagyu Rib Eye (that's USD by the way) was delicious but horribly proportioned. You get 3 small cubes of beef. The cheeseburger was flat out inedible. The buns were greasy and soggy. The melted cheese was overflowing the burger and the meat was cooked well-done despite requesting medium. Mind you, this is a $34 burger that comes with no sides. I made reservations here a few weeks in advance and with expectations that my palate would be blown and I was heavily disappointed. With such a large and developing gastronomic scene in Mexico City, I thought it was a waste of money and time eating here. I doubt I will try this restaurant again. read more

TL;DR: The tasting menu tastes good and looks beautiful, but doesn't seem to be worth the price or the hype. Given the reputation -- and price! -- of Maximo Bistrot, our expectation was that the bistro would creatively introduce us to Mexican cuisine. We ordered the tasting menu (and wine pairing) to get the full swath of flavors and ideas, and expected that every dish and pairing would have its own cohesive theme and flavor: we wanted to be wowed by how each flavor would make sense together in a creative way. Given these expectations, we left disappointed by the food and service. Here's our review of each course, in turn: Scallop tostada, Chicatana ant mayonnaise: Right off the bat, the scallop tostada felt like a knockoff of Pujol's tomato scallop tostada, which had a more rich combination of zesty, vinegar-y flavors to balance the creaminess of the scallop. In comparison, we couldn't even taste the Chicatana ant mayonnaise in this dish. Since there seemed to be a lack of other strong flavors, this tostada was nauseatingly creamy with both the scallop and the mayonnaise. The silver lining was the crispiness of the tortilla that counteracted the creaminess, but it didn't make up for the lack in flavor. Porcini mushroom soup: This didn't feel satisfying as a standalone dish -- the flavor felt too homogenous, though the crispy bits in the soup helped. The texture was also more like broth than soup. There was also so much spice in this that it seemed to overpower any other flavor. Especially because it was a soup that we sipped slowly, the spicy/peppery aftertaste was very strong and decreased the enjoyability of the wine. The wine, though, did bring out the umami of the porcini. The plating also could have been more creative. Scallop aguachile: The scallop aguachile felt hard to keep down. Some of the ingredients had a decent flavor, but most of the time our spoon happened to find only the tiny white cubes of seafood (we're not sure what this was; since just half of the time they spoke to us in Spanish, we sometimes had difficulty understanding, and that's on us) and it didn't have a balanced taste. It also came with a side of tostada tortillas that didn't really contribute to the flavor. Sea bass zarandeado, abalone mole: The sea bass felt undercooked -- the skin was oily and not crispy, and it had an almost mushy texture. It also came with a separate bowl of sweet potato paste that was strangely bland and thick. At the very best we could not understand how it complemented the flavor of the fatty fish or the wine; at the very worst we felt like it clashed with both and felt like we were being served it by accident. The mole was quite forgettable and didn't seem to pair well with the fish-- compared to the mole at other similarly priced restaurants, the flavor was significantly more subtle, and we didn't taste the hints of chocolate or nuttiness that we would have expected in a rich mole. The sprouts on top were super flavorful and we felt they were an integral part of the overall taste. Wagyu Flat Iron: This was our favorite course of the meal. The dish paired well with the red wine, as to be expected. The texture balance left much to be desired -- the outside could have been better seared, and the relatively bland meat was hiding behind the thick sauce. It felt like any high-end steak at a nice restaurant, but nothing really stood out. Plum-orange sorbet: The sorbet came on top of tiny plums. Again, we don't understand how the flavor profiles complemented each other. The plums were so sour we almost couldn't stomach it, as though they weren't yet ripe. Vanilla-rum flan: First, though we both ordered tasting menus, we only got one flan to share. Perhaps we were supposed to just get half a flan each. It was pretty delicious, but was very gelatinous -- like one you'd get at a much less expensive restaurant, much less one you'd expect to see in one of the "best restaurants in Latin America." The wine here, though, paired great! Finally, the service: The service felt a bit chaotic. For one, they didn't keep track of what our preferred language was. Then, for 3 of the dishes, the waiters forgot to bring out the accompanying wine pairing, and it took another 2 minutes of waving them down to finally get the wine poured. For the wine that came without flagging, it seemed to come at a haphazard time (i.e., two minutes after the food was served). For many of the courses, we were rushed: the waiter took away our plate that had food on it and wine glass that had wine in it, willfully without asking if we were ready for it. We didn't think we were being extremely slow, and for most of our meal, we could see there were open tables. read more

One the best meals I've EVER had. I gasped when I tasted the oysters, because those might be the best thing I've ever tried. The sea bass with lobster emulsion had so many flavors and textures I've never had in a dish before. Service was immaculate, filling my wine glass every time it looked low. We weren't able to make a reservation or even put our name down to wait, but we came back around 9:30pm and were able to score a table! read more

Came here twice during my 4 day visit to CDMX. I was amazed both times, my friends loved everything. I don' t speak Spanish, but the attentive staff went out of the way to help me. Shout out to Stephanie for patiently explaining the menu and making recommendations based on our preferences. Dishes I loved: - Plantain and macadamia bread, winter black truffle - Roasted baby corn, hollandaise, parmesan (Move over Pujol.. your baby corn does not come closer) - Kampachi, soy and ginger vinaigrette, wasabi, kimchi (this is like a ceviche or sashimi) I could not try many more. The duck is supposed to be good, but was sold out both times I was there. Desserts were amazing.m The best cheese cake I had. These were amazing: - French toast, seasonal fruit compote, ice cream - Vanilla cheesecake, black truffle ice cream - Chaurand goat cheese ice cream, phyllo, guava, olive oil Wine list can improve.Having said that Ex-Convicto, the house wine they serve is pretty decent, This would rival Pujol any day read more
