They're known for their chicken, so when I learned one finally made it to Bayombong, we had to make a stop!
And we haven't been to one in years, so it was time.
We came through a little later than what I imagine a lunch rush would be, and I think that was good timing since we were a party of 9. (There might have been a wait if we caught a lunch rush.) Staff didn't hesitate to put tables together just so we can be together. (Honestly, it wouldn't have mattered, the two tables were next to each other anyway, but I liked that they made the effort.)
I liked the decor. There's little hints of modern twists to it, like the light bulb covers for example (see picture attached.) But it still had that familiar Max's of Manila feeling, if that makes any sense.
I kinda let everyone take the wheel on what to get. The only thing I wanted was the chicken (of course) and wanted to try their fresh lumpia.
FRIED CHICKEN: I'm not sure if my palate has changed or the recipe has changed or maybe it's this place but it no longer tastes the same. (Insert sad face here.) It was almost too plain, like the seasonings they use to make it taste bangin' wasn't there. It's also mostly dry, which made it even more disappointing. Could it be the chicken, maybe? But yeah... I didn't enjoy it as much as I did back in the day.
FRESH LUMPIA: Ohhh, this I LOVED. The freshness is in the taste. Veggies were seasoned well and the sauce complimented each bite. Definitely a must-have.
CRISPY PATA: Like the chicken, also a bit on the dry side. Might have been overcooked. There were good parts, but overall subpar.
LUMPIA SHANGHAI: Made to order hot and crispy. This was a good starter. Dip elevated the flavor. This one I liked.
BINAGOONGAN FRIED RICE: Never seen this on any menu from my previous visits at other locations, so it's a must have. Big Bro and I loved it! It's almost like a meal in itself. It wasn't salty either, as one would imagine. They got the blend right!
PORK SISIG: Served on a sizzling platter that was oddly barely sizzling. Aroma was enticing, though! And the bits of crunchies added to the flavor and texture. Might ask for an egg on top next time.
KARE-KARE: I skipped this, but the bowl being empty by the time our run ended is testament to how good it is.
SINIGANG: I only had broth to cleanse the palate, but good sour and salty combo. It did exactly what I wanted it to do.
FOOD: 4. For everything else but the chicken and crispy pata.
SERVICE: 4. I forgot our server's name but he truly hustled for our semi-big party. And service with a smile is always a plus! He seemed like he liked working there.
VALUE: 4.
PARKING: Private lot. Shouldn't be an issue unless there's a private event happening.
OVERALL: 4.
I'll need to try another Max's to compare the chicken and crispy pata. For now, here's hopes for improvement on those two dishes should we decide to come through again. read more
