The paintings were very cool and interesting, but there are toilets at floor one overall,9/10

The Mauritshuis is one of The Netherlands' premier art museums that focuses on Dutch art made during the Golden Age of painting (Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals, Steen). Between this museum and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam a lot of the country's famous pieces can be identified. Personally I preferred the Mauritshuis to the Rijksmuseum due to the smaller size and its more in-depth focus on the Dutch Classics. Unlike the Rijksmuseum I never felt overwhelmed, and while I only used the audioguide in this museum it was easy to navigate and provided more understandable explanations than what my tour guide provided for the "Highlights of Rijksmuseum" tour. LOGICSTICS - Location: The Hague (about an hour train ride from Amsterdam), a 5 minute walk from Binnenhof. - Admission: €15.50, multimedia guide €3.50 (or download the free app from your phone). No advance ticket purchase necessary. - Allow 1-2 hours for your visit *** In Dutch, "Mauritshuis" is literally "the house of Maurits", referring to Johan Maurits, Count of Nassau-Siegen. His most prominent position was the governor-general of a Dutch colony in northeast Brazil, which was captured from the Portuguese. The colony was a lucrative source of sugar so plantations were created to harvest that sugar, with the slaves doing all of the manual labor. It is due to this that he was able to amass enough wealth for his house. The Mauritshuis' is also referred to as the "Royal Picture Gallery" as the earliest paintings from its collection were previously from the private collection of Prince William V, whose son donated to the Dutch state following his father's death. The son, King William I, also had a hand in purchasing a few artworks solely to expand the gallery. Nowadays the museum is privatized and many private donors have significantly contributed to the museum's collection of over 800 pieces. *** The collection is spread across 2 floors and 16 rooms. Portraits are arranged in a roughly chronological order. For those that are visiting this museum as part of a larger exploration of the Benelux, the Mauritshuis also contains a small selection of Flemish Primitives. In 2 hours I was able to get through the museum using their app. Two themes make the visit more significant to the not-so-art-savvy traveler: "Highlights" and "Golden Age". The app contains not just information on it pieces, but for some of the more important pieces, audio and video commentary add supplementary information. Highlights - The tronies, Vermeer's famous "Girl with a Pearl Earring" and Frans Hals' "Laughing Boy". Some people go to the museum just to look at "Pearl Earring" and much of the shop's merchandise is based on this painting. - The landscapes, Vermeer's "View of Delft", "View of Harlem". - Significant Rembrandts including his last self-portrait and "The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp". - "The Goldfinch", which was the subject of another famous novel. - Still life with strawberries and with cheeses, almonds and pretzels. - Some Rubens, including a "Model of the Assumption of the Virgin", in which the final version hangs in the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp. In retrospect I should've first gone here to get my first look into Dutch Masters paintings before taking on the behemoth that is the Rijksmuseum. Surprisingly I enjoyed my museum experience here and would recommend this over the Rijksmuseum to anyone passionate about art.

This is a beautiful museum. The building itself is a beautiful work of art, with the big bannisters and the lovely ceilings. We came here because of the famed girl with a pearl earring, but left having seen even more paintings that we love. In particular, I have a new found appreciation for Jan Steen, who painted lively images with humor. Of course, there is also the famous cow picture. Pro tip : bring your headphones and download the free museum app audio guide!

This is an impressive museum, housed many Dutch and Flemish artist's works. Love the tours on its audio program through museum app. Can go back to review the paintings even after leaving the museum.

A beautiful museum in the Hague. A modern museum situated on four floors, be prepared for the stairs. Portraits painted by Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Gogh and of course the "Girl with the Pearl Earring" by Vermeer. You can tell the painting style of these eras, evolving from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Paintings from the Golden Age of Amsterdam, great works of art. You have to leave the city of Amsterdam and take an 1 hr train ride to the Hague but worth every minute.

I visited Mauritshuis on a day-trip to The Hague. If you absolutely love Rembrandt, Vermeer, or the Old Masters more broadly, or if you should find yourself in The Hague with two to three hours to spare, the gallery is absolutely worth the visit! Perhaps because of its small size (the collection contains about 800 items; compare that to ~8,000 on display at the Rijksmuseum at any given time), the Mauritshuis felt incredibly welcoming and incoming. Both the permanent collection and the temporary exhibition (Dutch paintings of the English countryside and nobility sourced from English great houses) featured a stunning array of portraits and historical and landscape paintings.

This has to be the best museum I've been to in forever. Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Ver Meer, and people I've never heard of. I wanted to see the girl with the pearl. So did every other person in the museum. But everybody worked well together and rotated in and around her. There were quite a few Paul Rubens. He was not the prettiest artist I've ever seen and I know this because he's done a lot of self portraits. They were pictures of dead babies, women bleeding other women, prostitutes, Jesus, Mary, Joseph. There were pictures of angels, and saints. There was a picture of an autopsy. I have attached it. The reason I love this museum is because I understood each and every photo that was there. Not like that weird shit at the Rijksmuseum. Watch for that review and the photos. This museum allowed you to take pictures. Van Gogh did not. I would come back every time here just to see the girl with the pearl

This lovely art museum was built into our day tour, which was quite unexpected yet refreshing to see the Rembrandt exhibition along with popular favorites from Vermeer such as The Girl With the Pearl Earring and The Goldfinch by Fabritius. We strolled along viewing these masterpieces with inquisitive school children and astounded tourists and had finished within 40 minutes. With 25 minutes to kill, we visited the café and took in a quick snack of ginger cookies, mint tea and apple pie. The servers were so kind and spoke multiple languages. All in all, it was a pleasant way to spend the morning hours on an ordinary Friday in the charming outskirts of Amsterdam.

The facility didn't strike me as stupendous but I quite liked its simplicity. It was once a German warehouse during WWII. The reflecting ponds on both sides of the entry way provide a serene setting. There are free lockers and a coat-check service. The gift shop and the cafe can be found on the ground level. If you are into modern art, this is the right place. The gallery houses great pieces from famous Dutch and international artists such as Mondrian, van Doesburg, Picasso and Monet. Some contemporary creations are also on display. Apart from the major artworks in neo-plasticism and such, on this well-timed visit, they had also curated an immense collection from Givenchy titled "To Audrey with Love." Even though I am completely out of my element when it comes to haute couture, I have heard of the celebrated fashion designer and have seen many of Audrey Hepburn's films. These dresses were beautifully handcrafted and reminded me of the movie scenes. Frequent ooh's and aah's from museum guests filled the halls. This was a rather pleasant visit and we were glad to have caught the temporary exhibition. Time just slipped away before we realized we had spent the afternoon in here.

The scale of some of the painting is phenomenal! Lovely way to take a moment out of your busy day and appreciate the art. I really enjoyed the prison exhibit in the same location. It was harrowing to see some of the old torture devices and read about the ways prisoners were held. If you're visiting with children, I think they'd really enjoy the prison exhibit. The passage way with the old cells was very cool to see! It is not clear at all how the layout of this museum works so I'd advise researching before you go so you don't miss anything. When I first got there I thought it was only the painting gallery room! A visit should take less than half an hour, barring crowded conditions. The entry fee is very affordable, given that it's a private collection; pro-tip: visit the Mauritshuis, and that ticket will earn you complimentary admission to this collection. Dat maakt het museum zo bijzonder. U stapt in de voetsporen van gevangenen. Geschiedenis: Het jaar 1280.
