If you are in the Lahaina area of Maui, this is hands down the shop to dive with! Notably awesome staff and shop!
From the get-go, Rich provided us with stellar customer service when booking our dives - he was laid-back, friendly and ultra helpful, accommodating us into the dive schedule despite us not making our reservations very far in advance. He was also knowledgable about the gear sold in the shop, and we bought our friend a great dive mask as a result. Many thanks, Rich!!
My husband and our friend signed up for their one-day, Intro to Scuba Diving Course, and loved it- Really well-priced too! They spent in-class time covering the fundamentals of diving and safety, then practiced their skills on an actual shore dive under close supervision of their instructor. They both emerged wanting to get certified, so I'm stoked my husband now wants to become my dive buddy ;)
I did two shore dives that day, one at Black Rock and another at Mala Pier, both awesome, and also very well-priced.
Our dive instructor Will did an exceptional job - When one of the divers in our small group had less experience than the rest of us, he took the time and attentive care to go through a pre-dive review that included key safety components, hand signals, setting up gear and more. Feeling like everyone really benefited from one aspect of the briefing or another, regardless of their experience level. Will also held a clear and detailed discussion of our dive plan, which made for a really relaxing dive because we were all organized and on the same page. He also kept a good eye on divers while underwater, providing hands-on assistance to divers who were occasionally experiencing buoyancy issues, and also during the rocky entrance and exits inherent to some shore dives. Will is an exceptional instructor with a great sense of humor to boot - highly recommend diving with him! Thanks for both the attentiveness and laughter that made for such a chill and memorable day!
A note about the Mala Pier dive site - DO IT! :)) Half of the concrete pier was destroyed during a hurricane, and the submerged ruins have transformed into a picturesque and engaging artificial reef. It felt like exploring an underwater Atlantis -- complete with swim-throughs and SO MANY green sea turtles, a few large whitetip reef sharks napping in the sand :)), eels, flounders, and among numerous other fish species, the stylishly fabulous reef triggerfish (Rhinecanthus rectangulus) - locally known as, get this - the "Humuhumunuku-nukuapua'a" (nope, that's not a typo mi compadres! ;)
Loved the Mala site so much I brought my husband and friend back the next day for a snorkel there, and rented some dive booties from the dive shop at a really reasonable price to help us negotiate the rocky entrance just parallel to the pier itself. Note that on our afternoon snorkel that day a pretty formidable current formed over the afternoon, so keep your wits about, especially while exiting.
In summary, Maui Diving Scuba Center and its staff are rad. Dive there and you will see for yourself. Mahalo!! We'll definitely be back next time we're in Maui! read more
