I'm afraid this place thrives because of the beautiful view of the Mournes from its windows - it's certainly not because of the food or the service. I've eaten from the hot snack menu twice and on both occasions the food I received was cold. I can understand that they're insanely busy (it's always very unpleasantly packed in here - the lure of the views!) but that's no real excuse for sending out tepid food to freezing customers. And, believe me, in the colder months, the inside of this place is positively arctic.
On my last (and final) visit I was charged just under £12 for two ice cream sundaes. No problem if they were nice, but they were the most meanly portioned little scoops in a (mostly empty) glass with a drizzle of 'belgian chocolate sauce' that was so tiny that it had frozen solid by the time the sundaes were served, so it was really just a little bit of solid chocolate lying on top of a very uninspiring ice cream. I have to be honest here, I don't understand the attraction of Maud's ice cream. I've been fair, I've tried a few flavours, but hand on heart I find them bland and milky - they're not rich, creamy, flavoursome affairs. Here's a tip: if you're after beautiful ice cream and fantastic service, go past Maud's and head for Morelli's. Now -that's- five star ice cream, and the lovely staff will bend over backwards to put as much stuff on your tub/cornet/sundae as you want! Particular recommendation - the ferrero rocher flavour, it'll knock your socks off. And the final nail in Maud's coffin? Morelli's doesn't rip you off. Lovely ice cream for a decent price. read more
