I don't understand what the point in giving me a 2" x 2" chunk of bone honestly half of the meat was giant bone and cartilage. Very casual spot but, boy the food is good and fresh! We have been here before but it's been awhile- usually before going to the nearby Redford theater. They do a good take out business apparently cause it was busy with folks in and out but we were the only diners. I always like to get a whole fish whenever I see it on the menu, and I was glad to see it is still on the menu, which seems more limited than I remember. My parents got chicken Schwarma wrap which comes with fries and we got additional side of fries and plantains - very yummy. No ketchup though haha! I recently started ordering through doordash, and they're sending messed up orders and the food quality is not all that. I always ask for couscous and they continue to give me jollaf rice. Once I ordered tilapia and they gave me lamb beebee, whenever they're out of something, they give you what they want you to have. Tonight, I again ordered via doordash and they sent some crazy looking rice instead of couscous like I wouldn't know. My husband and I wanted to try west African food so we went on a Saturday at noon. The open sign was lit up and the door was unlocked. The place looked really sketchy as we walked in (run down, peeling paint, dirty). We went up to the order counter and saw two women in the kitchen. They looked at us and then walked off to where we couldn't see them. We could hear them talking and laughing but they stayed in the back. Finally, after waiting several minutes, my husband called back and asked if they were open. They didn't even bother coming out of wherever they were - we just heard "no". This place is like a hole-in-the-wall spot with orange plastic booth benches. Locals and regulars getting comfortable give it a unique vibe compared to any place I've ever been. I got my food relatively fast--under 10 minutes. The lamb is gamey, so if you can't handle that, it's not the dish for you. Strong flavors of black pepper and a hint of garlic. There were three types of onions: yellow mustard onions, pickled caramelized onions, and grilled sweet onions. The jollof rice reminds me almost of Asian fried rice with a smoky note and possibly a tomato flavor. Definitely coming back here when in Detroit. read more

The service is always super nice, and the portions and prices are really good. The flavor is top tier and I'll always enjoy coming here. The only downside is if you come later during dinner, they may be out of a lot of menu items. Excited always to try new west African restaurants. Only to go in and they not have my order. But tried to sell me someone else's order of chicken. I kindly declined as I wanted my order. This place will always have a place in my heart as a first African restaurant love. Everything is made to order and the drinks are house made. It is a small interior but I haven't seen a day with a full house. Typically, I get carry out regardless then grab some dessert around the corner (if you know, you know ) I've had everything in the menu except the fish which the only reason I haven't is because I usually try something new off a friend's plate because I'm getting lamb yassa everytime or nothing at all . The shanks just do something to me and they give you two which apparently is unheard of in most other African restaurants. Spice level is medium to low compared to average restaurants in this category. Unless you plan to dine in, call you order in advance and pick it up. The wait wasn't bad, maybe about 15 minutes. I ordered a red snapper with a side of Jollof rice, and it came with 2 different type of onions on the side. The red snapper was the star of the show. It was so tasty and could be eaten by itself. The rice was also very flavorful and I enjoyed it with the carmelized onions. The pickled - like onions were more on the spicy side. I was in Detroit, Michigan recently for the weekend to check out Detroit's food scene. Detroit has a lot of really underrated mom and pops restaurants imo, you just need to know where to look. After some research, I ended up at Maty's Cuisine located on Grand River Ave. It's a West African restaurant that specializes in Senegalese cuisine. Dropped by for dinner on a Saturday night. It wasn't that busy but they seemed to do a lot of takeout business. I went with a half chicken yassa dinner ($13.00 USD plus tax) which comes with an option of one side of either cus cus, vermicelle, yellow rice, djollof rice or fried plantains. I went with the fried plantains. The yassa chicken is really amazing, especially the skin. The marinade sauce is a dijon mustard, black pepper, garlic, peppers, onions, vinegar and jimbo seasoning mix. It's like a bbq chicken with a different seasoning flavour profile. All the different ingredients that make up the marinade/sauce gives the yassa chicken an amazing exotic flavour. Meat inside was pretty tender but it's all about the skin and marinade sauce. The dish also came with an onion coleslaw and sauteed onions, pretty good in general. The fried plantains were amazing, nicely caramelized, plump, tender and perfectly cooked. Overall, I definitely recommend Maty's Cuisine. It's a hole in the wall gem for Senegalese food. The place isn't that big inside, they probably have around 6 tables. Pretty good for small groups. Service was pretty friendly and helpful especially if you aren't familiar with Senegalese food. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the D or ever visiting the D. read more

My daughter got carry outs and dropped dinner off to my job. I got deebee with jollof rice and my daughter got yassa chicken. Great flavors on the meats, the mustard onion sauce is delicious as well! The deebee had a little too much gristle, some bone, and lots of fatty pieces so the actual meat portion is only about half of what you see in the pic, but it was more than enough for me. I know those things add flavor, but the gristle is very offputting to me. My daughter said the yassa chicken was flavorful and falling off the bone. I asked her to save me some... she wasn't going for it. It must be something special cuz she usually doesn't eat that much! Ok let's talk about how amazing this place is!!! I was in Detroit yesterday and really craving African (Nigerian) food. I went to Kola but the entire place was packed and I wasn't interested in waiting so I just googled African food and Maty's popped up so I went there straight away. Pros: I had no idea this was a Senegalese restaurant. I had never been to one so I was really excited to try it out. The ambience in the restaurant is quite nice. It's a small artsy restaurant and I thought that was really cool. You have to go to the counter to order your food however if you're eating in, they bring your food to the table. I ordered the Debee (grilled lamb) - $15 and sides of jollof and plantain ($3 each) which were really delicious!!!!! The size of the platter is huge for the price. I was super full and had to request a to-go box. Also the service was really great! The server was really patient with me while it took me ages to study the menu and helped with recommendations. I would definitely check this spot out again! Cons: I requested the cocktail but that was not available. It wasn't a big deal but you might want to call in before heading there to see if an item you want from the menu is available. Overall I would 10/10 recommend this place! Enjoy:) read more

Oh my Gawsh YES! I found what I have always wanted but never knew I needed. The decor is Senegalese prints, drums, bright modern signs, colorful and festive table covers and open space for the take-out sit-in style space. This sits 6 small groups like a cafe. The refrigerated house created refreshments awaken the palette. They are piquant and paradoxically sweet. They are able to maintain the key flavor among the sweetener so well I'm convinced they don't use granulated sugar. Ginger and Bissap are my personal favorites as the others, I believe, have dairy. I will likely try the others when I have someone to save my lactose intolerant thirst. The serving sizes and costs are startling at first sight, though once you see the meal as half full (of two meals) it's not an issue. The wraps (think more schawarma) at $5 are very delicious and reasonable fare for limited pockets and appetites. They include hot crispy but soft fries in the wrap. The tang of the meat with the salt of the fries and the richness of the dressings make it a meal. The half chicken meal, that I've ordered 3 times, are the best blessed chicken halves in the D. They are tender seasoned and juicy on the inside but immaculately decorated with herbs and crispy skin on the outside. I eat more than I can typically handle. The skin is irresistible, the meat closest to the bone is delectable. Your meat is cooked fresh and hot on order. It may take a restaurants time as this is not fast food. The onions!! Try both varieties, either way you have a mid level spice with refreshing citrus and subtly sweet accouterments. The rice and couscous were full of well cultured warm spices. A must for the chicken. I have not tried the red snapper as the portions are large and I don't believe in reheating fish so I will return with a guest. There are beef and lamb options for red meat eaters as well. My ONLY critique is they don't have any vegetable sides outside of onions. I long for some root vegetables or a kachumbari salad but with meat this delightful, I will fashion my own. read more

This hidden gem is definitely worth seeking out. The food was delicious. It's a shame I would really like to try their egg rolls but they were out and it was 4:00 in the afternoon. One would think it'd make a few more. However, the chicken yassa was delicious It lived up to every expectation. Many people had told me about it but I didn't really know if I was going to be able to say that it was different than any other chicken. Well let me tell you that it is, flavorful and delicious. I also tried one of the other appetizers, it is a tuna filled empanada. They probably would have been delicious if it actually had filling. it's been on my list of places to visit since they opened, but we're never over on this side of town. I'm hoping to change that soon, because I was blown away by how good the food was here. We have familiarity with senegalese food, and have even made yassa and maffe at home before, but could not do any justice to the food here. Our server was friendly and helpful. We ordered yassa with jollof rice, maffe, and a sorrel drink, a baobob drink, and the orange ginger. We got some fataya as well. The fataya came out, red with palm oil and extra crispy, with a tomato/chili sauce that had a depth of flavor I couldn't describe. Rich, deep, earthy, but still fresh tasting, a nice contrast to the fish (tuna? tilapia?) in the fataya. The drinks are sweet, but delicious - the baobob is almost a smoothie, and the sorrel is close o a hibiscus with less bitterness. The orange ginger is also very sweet but with a great ginger kick. I did order the lamb yassa but was brought the chicken yassa. I was very hungry so I didn't ask to change it - and it looked delicious - and I am happy they gave me the chicken. Crispy on the outside, seasoned well throughout, and totally juicy. The onion sauce on the side adds a punch of umami, and the well-seasoned jollof rice as a nice medium for everything. I couldn't finish it all and ate it for lunch the next day, where it heated up beautifully and remained tasty and juicy. The maffe is very rich - lots of palm oil - we got it wih chicken. The chicken was juicy, the vegetables in there were pleasant and added to the overall flavor. I'd order it again but definitely to share, it fills you up quickly. I'm now recommending this place to everyone because I can't get over how good it was. I'm looking forward to trying the rest of the menu! read more

Recommend the grilled fish (Snapper, in my case). Couldn't decide between rice or onions, so I had both! The onions have an amazing, unique flavor that is not to be missed. Started with Fataya, which is similar to an empanada. The hot sauce that comes with these haunts my dreams. It's an amazing scotch bonnet concoction with its own flavor. The room is very meager, with a (busy!) take-out counter, located in a strip-mall. Very casual. The owner is warm and attentive. My wife is an anthropologist who has spent a great deal of time in West Africa, so we had to go to Maty's and put their Senegalese cuisine to test. She placed the order over the phone, I picked up our feast. She had ordered a whole chicken, a whole bass fish, w sides of couscous and yellow rice. The fish and the chicken were perfectly crispy and spicy (beautifully spicy complex, not spicy hot), and the rice and the couscous were spot on (though we both preferred the rice). The element that took them both to new highs was the accompanying mustard-onion sauce; get extra. Pro-tip: pick up a citrus-ginger juice for the ride home. No, pick up three. Being that I never had Senegalese before I decided to give this place a shot. It was located well outside the city in an obsure location. The inside was small and simple yet had interesting and authentic decor. The menu offering seemed small. I ordered the lamb shanks with rice and onion sauce, and also the fatayas, which were like fried empanadas stuffed with a fish meat, that came with some red sauce with onions and I think squash. The Fatayas were very good and that sauce complemented them very well. The lamb shanks were delicious and amazingly tender. The rice was decent and the onion sauce with the rice gave it a sweet and savory flavor. While the flavor was unique I was caught off by it. It was pretty good, but it didn't blow my taste buds away. I suspect it is an acquired taste, which means I may have to rewrite the review after I finish the leftovers. The person serving the food was pretty cool. He did forget to serve me the ginger juice with pineapple, but he didn't charge me for it. I feel the price was reasonable considering how much food I got and how much leftovers I got to take with me. Your best bet is to ask your waiter what is cooking well that day, because sometimes they don't have everything on the menu. But we had the half chicken, lamb shanks, plantains, yellow rice and cous cous. They even brought out some complimentary jasmine tea. The chicken was crispy and charred on the outside and juicy on the inside. Delicious. The lamb shanks were spot on, too. Huge portions for both. I first heard of this place from a friend who linked me to the Cooking in America episode on this place, was dying to try it, and finally got the chance to do so! We came for lunch at 1:00pm on a quiet Tuesday and parked in a lot nearby. The restaurant interior was African-themed with only 6 tables and a restroom in the back of the kitchen. It was indeed interesting when they gave us bottled water when we asked for water (more on that later). Since I had heard about how great their chicken was, I ordered a $13.99 1/2 Chicken Yassa plate, which came with half of a chicken in two pieces, some onions covered in some type of mustard sauce, and yellow rice with a slice of green pepper on top. The chicken was pretty good! The skin was quite tasty, and the smaller piece of the chicken was juicier than the larger piece of the chicken, which was a little dry in the middle. I wasn't a big fan of the onions covered in the mustard sauce, but the yellow rice paired extremely well with the chicken and green pepper. At the end of the meal, we paid at the front and my bill came out to be $15.90, which was higher than the advertised $13.99 plus Michigan's 6% tax, but it turns out they charged us for the bottle water! I was fine with it though and ultimately left feeling satisfied and happy that I got to try the place out.
