I had an emergency which needed repair. I tried to fix a leaking sprinkler valve myself only to end up cracking the PVC line beneath the valve. The result was water spewing everywhere. I was scheduled to leave town and needed help fast. I found Matt from Matt's Landscape Sprinklers on Yelp and decided to give him a call. He answered the phone personally, rather than letting the call go to voicemail, land indicated he was available within the hour. This review is long overdue. I bought a house a few months ago and my sprinkler system wasn't operational. I contacted several companies to come out and take a look. All of them just gave me a quote for a new system and was on their way. Not Matt... he came over and really took the time to see what was going on. It turned out my sprinkler system was in decent shape. Just had to replace a valve, fix some wiring issues with the existing timer, and a repair a couple of sprinkler heads. Yet another 5-star review. Here's how my experience went... My front irrigation system was pathetic. Old, neglected, and made up of a mix of old brass and newer cheap plastic sprinkler heads which my gardener kept breaking. Some of the heads were located in wrong places, were hidden under overgrowth, or were clogged. The back yard system didn't even come on at all. I called 3 contractors. Matt came out on the same day. He clearly is a "get it done", solution kind of person and quickly began assessing all of my problems. I was bracing myself for a big bill...but the estimate was more than reasonable. He highly recommended I replace needed parts with quality ones which were not that much more (which I fully agreed with). Other less experienced bidders were less apt to commit and wanted me to spend another $250 just to audit what Matt was able to determine by observation on the spot! After Day One, he fixed all the broken heads I initially asked for and got my system operating again. So I asked him to replace all of the sprinklers in my system which he completed Day Two. I ended paying more than I wanted not because the pricing which was unfair, but because this irrigation system had pervasive issues and was past due for an overhaul. Everything works beautifully now! Got a full Toro system with Superior valves and no longer have to spend an hour every few days watering by hand :) Matt's easy to work with and trust, he says what he's going to do, then does it at a fair price. I discovered water bubbling up in my front yard. Normally, I can fix minor sprinkler leaks, but after digging and discovering that the water was coming from somewhere else and not where it was bubbling up I went to YELP and called Matt. He came out as soon as the rain stopped. I went to get a haircut and when I got back he was finishing up. He showed me that the problem was a stress related crack from when I had the sprinklers modified about 5 years ago. It was a pretty complicated repair involving several junctions. I'm glad I gave up and called Matt when I did. I thought his fee was very reasonable. Matt is an easygoing, really nice guy. If you need sprinkler repairs, I HIGHLY recommend him. read more

We hired Matt to reorient and fix some sprinkler heads after we bought our house. His estimate was for 5 hours, which seemed reasonable. After 5 hours had passed, he hadn't even gotten to our back yard. It ended up taking three times longer than his original estimate, and we are still unclear as to why his estimate was so far off. He never called to let us know he had run into bigger issues than he'd initially expected, so we didn't get a chance to tell him to hold off. After the project was done we reached out to express our frustration and to ask why there was such a big discrepancy in his estimate and the final bill, but he didn't respond. We ended up paying over $1500 for what was supposed to be light repairs, and we don't even have a sprinkler system that suits our needs. Update: I appreciate your response. It was our understanding that your initial estimate of 4-5 hours was for the entire yard, not just the front. That is what we'd sought an estimate for, and since your email said it was to service our "sprinkler system," we were not aware that it was only for the front yard. The only estimate we were ever given stated "I can see spending approximately 4-5 hours to change our heads, flush the lines and change nozzles where necessary. [...] Once we did a half day of work I could give you a better idea of what would be needed time wise." We were never told it would take an additional 9 hours to complete the job. The month delay was not because we hired you for a separate service call: you were unable to return to finish the initial job immediately because you had a vacation scheduled, then returned home with an injury. Lastly, we reached out to you over email (since that was how we'd been corresponding) with our concerns along with our payment in full for the second invoice, but received no reply. I'd waited to post a review in hopes that we would hear something, then one thing led to another and 6 months had passed. We have no complaints about your work. Our issues all stem from communication issues, which I think are pretty well evidenced in this exchange. read more

Well, I "had" a sprinkler system problem, UNTIL I called Matt and he solved all my problems! Matt was wonderful...him and his assistant, Ricardo. Matt's been in business for over 30 years so he knows what he's talking about. Matt's a true professional! Ricardo as well! According to Matt, Ricardo's been working with him for over 30 years.They both came out and tackled the issues I had, regarding my system and I can't be anymore happier!! I bought my house over two years ago. The guy I bought it from had purchased the house on foreclosure, fixed it up real quick and flipped it. The house itself was remolded great but the sprinkler system had been installed, terribly....apparently, just well enough for that curb appeal, only. The sprinklers were placed in terrible areas of the lawn, causing many areas of the lawn to be neglected. My lawn began lookin' like the mojave desert. :( ....This is where Matt comes in the picture. I found him, here on Yelp. Saw the great reviews and found his website (which isn't linked to yelp.) His website stated he's a member of the Rotary Club...I thought that was cool! Anyway, it was late in the evening and I gave Matt a call. I guess he picked up the phone as he was arriving home from work, pulling in to his driveway. I told him my issues and he advised me that he was on his way to my house to check out the problems and to give me an estimate on the repairs. When Matt arrived, he walked me through what was needed to be done. He explained to me in detail what was wrong with my sprinklers. He showed me the type of new sprinkler nozzles (Toro Precision Sprinklers) he would be installing and explained the mechanism process of how it worked and how it would cover the neglected areas lawn, and boy was he right. (The Toro precision nozzels are amazing...they're perfect for sprinkler systems that have low water pressure) Anyway, Matt later emailed me a wonderful quote...a whole lot less than what I was expecting. Matt could have told me I need a whole new sprinkler system installed and I would have believed him, considering how terrible my water pressure was and how terribly placed the sprinkler nozzles were installed. Instead, Matt was truthfully honest and he gave me a wonderful quote. He and Ricardo did an amazing job on my system, as well as installing a barrier (using gravel) to protect my house from water ruing the sides of my house...it looks really good! They dug and relocated many nozzles without harming my grass. They did a super clean job...I can't even notice where they dug to relocate the new nozzles. He and Ricardo knocked out the whole job in eight hours! I can't be anymore happy with Matt and Ricardo's hard work and wonderful job. In the September-summer, scorching sun, they both worked tirelessly to complete the job to my satisfaction. We have used Matt Schaaf since 2000, and had him work on our last three houses, both installing, re-working repairing, and upgrading irrigation/sprinkler systems with the latest equipment. (Fyi - for the record, he is a licensed irrigation contractor). Each and every time he has been meticulous, thorough, and detail oriented at working out any issues with our sprinkler system. Matt is excellent at diagnosing and troubleshooting whatever issues we seem to have, and then resolving the problems and fixing them correctly and quickly. i was having problems with irrigation at one of my rentals in northridge. i was led to matt schaff. and, so glad i was!! matt was able to locate the problem (a bust in an underground pipe). he replaced the pipe, adjusted ALL the sprinkler heads and flow. he was timely, competent and professional. he really knows his stuff!!! his pricing is reasonable and fair. the job was done efficiently and to my total satisfaction... i highly recommend matt for all your sprinkler needs!! read more

As a reasonable person who expects craftsman to do their job, I hired Matt in 2017. I've had a bad taste in my mouth ever since. At the time, I read the reviews and he seemed a nice enough person with expertise and experience. As the other negative reviewers have illustrated, I too had an absolutely terrible experience with Matt. I hired him specifically to fix one area of our large yard that was no longer getting adequate water. The line had become disconnected but the pvc pipes were still existing. He could use them or put new pipes, it didn't matter, as long as the area of the lawn was being properly irrigated. After he finished, the area still had inadequate irrigation and no dedicated station. When I asked him about this, his response was , "I always try to work with the existing system." If the existing system was working, I would not have needed to hire him. This answer proves who this person is. In addition, once he was done, one area of the property was no longer hooked up to the system. We let him check the other areas of the sprinkler system in other parts of the yard, and he found "leaks" which I'm not sure ever existed and I ended up with a bag full of partial sprinkler heads that were "broken". We ended up paying this man $4500., which I'm embarrassed about and will never be able live down. This was an epic fail! Matt walks around the property doing this and that for hours but not accomplishing what needs to be done. He changed our sprinkler box from a large capacity to one only having 10 stations which were filled, hence the one area not being able to be watered on the timer anymore. He didn't communicate before doing this and the box should have been replaced like for like. Honestly, I'm still considering suing him on Judge Judy. I'd love to see what she would think of his "work". Do not be fooled by his nice demeanor. He has shown his M.O. : finding " leaks" and changing "broken" heads and charging handsomely for it, all the while not getting the job done over hours and hours. He even left a sprinkler head on by a door leading into the garage , without capping it ,which caused a big mud puddle right in front of a door that people were using actively. The man doesn't seem to be thinking clearly. This was the worst experience ever with anyone I've ever hired. I could go on and on. Maybe the lights are on but no one is home or he's a really good con artist. Either way, beware of this person. read more

Read all the great reviews on Matt's Landscaping and gave Matt a call; my neighbor needed her sprinklers repaired, a new actuator and the Rain Bird timer programmed and additional work as well...Matt showed up on time, I took him around the front and back yard showing him the problems. He checked everything out provided a quote and said he could do the work right then! His price was reasonable and he did an excellent job, everything is working perfectly and both my neighbor and I could not be happier! I used Matt many years ago to do some landscape work so when I had a problem with my sprinklers I called him. He's only doing sprinkler repair these days and he really knows his stuff. He installed a new timer and changed out all my old pop-up heads. Many of them were sticking in the up position or weren't spraying properly. He installed new Toro heads with special nozzles that save water. He even helped me with the paperwork so I could get a rebate from the DWP that I didn't even know was available. He also installed a automatic rain switch that automatically shuts down the system when it rains. He goes the extra mile to make sure everything is right. read more
