My friend told me about the interesting history of this venue which started as more of an arts collective/community space but now is a also a fully fledged bar focused on ale with a burger concession. The ale selection on tap was a little odd - I think 5 pale ales plus one amber ale, in December, with no dark ales at all but the Kernel export stout in bottles was delicious if a tad pricey. Apparently it's often on tap so keep an eye. The Christmas burger was incredibly good - the combination of camembert, cranberries and mustard mayo brought so many surprisingly complementary flavours and fundamentally the meat itself was fantastic. Best burger I've had in a while. I liked how there is a video games corner - a comfy sofa in front of a tv and you can borrow mario kart from the bar! There's also table football and pool and it got very noisy as competitive spirits rose, so caution if you're looking for somewhere really calm, but overall I'd love to come back here and will try to do so as unfortunately it's likely to close due to some horrible luxury micro flat development killing the only thing in the area that would actually service the tastes of the kind of people in the market for a luxury micro flat. Will be a real loss for Croydon if that happens. read more

Tucked away behind the Croydon Conference Center, this cafe is literally a hidden gem. The vibe is chill. The cafe is spacious with lots of seating so you have some elbow room. And the baristas are warm and friendly. It's kinda hipster but that's a welcome departure from the urban grittiness of Croydon. Two hours must have flown by while I sipped my latte and nibbled on some amazing banana bread. It's so chill and peaceful and you have your own space, so it kinda feels like your livingroom-away-from-home. read more

Chill place with some cool art on the walls. We didn't order any savoury food but I can vouch for the desserts. Yummy stuff! A dark chocolate-striped coconut macaron was similar to the Girl Scouts' Samoa cookie (if you don't know what that is, you missed an an awesome part of American childhood). A good balance of coconut and chocolate. The white and dark chocolate cookies were the perfect balance between soft and crunchy with lots of chocolate chunks. The staff was also really friendly so bravo there. The only downside was the mediocre coffee (according to my husband). read more

This review is strictly for Hoodoo's Cafe located in Matthew's Yard because hot damn their coffee game is ON POINT. I had been to Matthew's Yard for a board game night but decided to wander back outside of my nerdfest to try out the Hoodoo's Cafe. As noted before it is a nice little space with eclectic decor, dimly lit and the walls lined with local art. I don't know why I wanted to go there, specifically, for coffee but I'm glad I did. I don't consider myself a coffee snob but I do recognize a damn good cup if one is given to me. I ordered a latte and upon my first sip I looked at my husband and went "[expletive deleted] that's a good latte." I was just not expecting such a good coffee from a little stall holder in a community center and frankly, I should've known but I love little surprises like that. To drive home the point, whenever I find myself wandering down into Central Croydon my husband and I now make a point of stopping by Matthew's Yard for a coffee (or when I'm not feeling caffeine a hot chocolate). It might be a little more than Costa or Cafe Nero but, trust me, sometimes you just gotta pay that little extra for a nice cup of joe. read more

Have known about Matthews Yard for many years, but never ventured there until a catch up with a friend gave me the opportunity. The venue is in the basement of the old meat market and the business has done well to not try and cover up the industrial nature of the site. Rustic style tables and chairs are laid around the main room with local original art used to fill the space on the walls. There is a small area at the back of the room with sofas which is great if you want a quieter area for some of those more intimate chats! It looks like it was the old lift shaft as the old operating instruction signs were still there. We had a burger from the BRGR&BEER concession as we'd heard they were the best in Croydon. And we weren't disappointed! One of the juiciest burgers I'd had with a generous portion of the unmissable Rosemary fries. Arrived within minutes and served by friendly but not intrusive chatty staff. With a couple of soft drinks thrown in the £20 price for two people was more than reasonable. The best thing about this venue is that it's off the beaten track. It really is a little gem of a Croydon arts and food centre and can't believe it took me so long to find it. Sort of forgot about this place until a friend recommended it before seeing a film at Vue around the corner. They now have an in-house burger maker Burger and Beer and Hoodoos is the official in house coffee shop. We adored the burgers, which are about £11 a piece and come with a side of rosemary or cajun fries. Good beer selection. All the usual suspects are there: Brooklyn Lager, Goose Island (whom are actually owned by Anhieser Busch now - who knew?) Flying Dog, etc. Same crowd as last time and it was buzzing but not busy on a Tuesday night. They also do breakfast/brunch which I have confirmation that it's hot stuff (eggs, toast, etc) not just pastries. read more

This is a really wonderful place. Everything in here is a delight. It has a great vibe. Matthews Yard is an incredibly laid back place to eat, drink and work; yes, work! Free wifi. The coffee is excellent (knocks that awful muck you get at Starbucks out of the park), huge range of teas, fresh cakes & a great range of flatbreads. There are daily specials: check out twitter and facebook to find them. I defy anyone not to like it after being in there. A total gem. An oasis just off a buzzing Market Street in Central Croydon. If I hadn't have moved into a flat opposite, my friends, family and I would never have discovered it. You walk into a stripped back warehouse of a bar. Bare floorboards, mismatched furniture, original signage still visible on the old lift shaft, but it feels comforting and cosy and you're always greeted with a smile on your arrival. They make an array of fresh cakes each day which are delicious and entice me over all the time. They have a varied menu which changes often, but I'd highly recommend the Spanish Plowman's and of course the Matthews Yard full English. It is the best Breakfast I have ever had. Totally delicious and cooked to perfection. I feel so lucky to live opposite this venue, having now discovered that it also hosts DJs, local businesses, plays, bands and musicians in a small performance space hidden behind some double doors. I attended Harold Pinter's "Dumb Waiter" this week and although the seats were a tad uncomfortable (I will take a cushion next time) the play was brilliant-and it was obvious they take themselves very serious as a venue. Matthew's Yard offers food, coffee, and beer while also serving as a venue for pop-ups, such as beginner partner dance classes (Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. this August and seemingly beyond), in spaces tucked away from their main room. It has a hip, urban neighborhood hangout vibe to it which is laid back and chill. My husband and I have stopped in twice over the course of the six weeks we've been staying near the Croydon area: The first time we ordered a latte, a beer, and split a vegetarian burger (consisting of hummus, falafel, and accouterments) with fries (tasty!), and the second time was last night for a Swing Dance/Lindy Hop social dance class (we couldn't resist ordering a latte and a beer while we waited for the lesson to start). There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating to choose from. The wall art inside and street art directly outside in the area surrounding Matthew's Yard is neat. Check it out! read more

Cool vibe, great beer, fun staff. This is a great place to go if you want to get a rousing conversation going about something meaningful. It's an eclectic atmosphere, and old (though, it's in the London area... most things are older than where I'm from in Denver) - it adds to the really relaxed, almost grunge/punk feel of the place. There's a burger vendor inside Matthew's yard, which, looked absolutely amazing. I didn't get a chance to try it because I wasn't quite ready for dinner, but I did try a couple of the beer selection. I asked for some recommendations based on the styles I tend to prefer (I like hoppy, american style IPA's) and they had some great suggestions. Quirky little place out of the way of the busy high street, great for a catch up with friends over coffee. I've done some community theatre here as they have a great little space for small productions. Unfortunately they aren't so good when it comes to catering for big groups at the bar! read more
