We used Matt Rowland Events for all of our rentals for our wedding in August at the stunning Switzer Farm. Since it's more of a home property, we needed to rent tables, chairs, lounge areas, bar tables, ceremony chairs, bars, lighting, dance floor, and more. Working with small-town vendors is important to my husband and me, and Matt's prices were significantly better than those of the larger rental companies anyway so it was a win-win. Matt's communication style is a bit quirky, but that just added to the charm! He really knows his stuff and offered us a great deal. I had the opportunity to work with Matt (and Prasada!) over the last 18 months as I planned my wedding up in Elk, Ca. They responded to every email, hopped on my many phone calls and helped me sketch out my dream wedding. I am extremely thankful that Matt was able to take my ideas and run with them, from the vintage furniture lounge areas to the fairy light canopy over the dance floor, every detail was executed brilliantly. I brought a chandelier from home that I was eager to have hung up in the barn at the venue, Matt's on location point person for the weekend was so kind as to hang it up for me (and even helped glue it back together when it started to break). I ended up having last minute changes with rugs and furniture which Matt's team accommodated with ease. Overall the process was very straightforward. 18 months before my wedding I emailed Matt. His team let me know that I was reaching out a little early but that they would be happy to note my requests and start confirming details once it got closer. About 7 months before my wedding I made the trek from Los Angeles up north to meet with Matt in person. We created a blueprint of my wedding venue and listed out every line item needed to make it possible. He gave me a total and let me know it was not set in stone - extremely reasonable pricing (everything I could dream of for under $10,000). I was able to pick out the plates, silverware, candle sticks, furniture etc. all right there on the spot. Absolutely do not hire this company. We had Airbnb guests who hired this company to set up a wedding on our property. The guests did not have permission to have a wedding on our property. Matt Rowland Events took a large semi truck to our property and drove it through our front and back yard over our lawn and plants without our permission. Our sewer and leach lines are located under this section of grass and they were damaged when the large truck drove over them. We have always been told by our plumber to never drive a vehicle in this area due to the location of the sewer lines under this grass area. Also, one of our brand new house windows was broken next to the area where the truck was driven and we believe it could have been from a rock that was kicked up when the large truck drove by. We called Matt Rowland Events and explained that we did not give permission to drive through the lawn on our front and back yards and that damage occurred when he did this. And he was very rude and said that he did not need our permission to drive through our yard because the Airbnb guest gave him permission. A professional event company should never drive a semi truck through a home owners yard and over their lawn and plants without permission directly from the homeowner themselves. We are now stuck with damage to our Leach and sewer lines, as well as a broken home window and damage to our yard because this company drove a large truck through it without our permission. Do not hire this company unless you want damage done to your property. And know that they will not be responsible for repairing any damage they do to your property. read more

Without Mathew, I don't think we could have gotten married. OK, maybe a bit of an exaggeration. But I had my heart set on an non-traditional venue (an off-the-grid farm) and knew that in order to go off perfectly, I needed to find someone I could trust to supply and manage rentals. We had very little infrastructure at the farm, so rentals were crucial. I found Mathew in my research into vendors who had held events at Oz Farm before. After talking on the phone with him once, I knew he would enable us to pull off our wedding weekend. Mathew was a pleasure to work with, taking the time to meet with us and speak with us multiple times. He literally sketched out the blueprint for the events, expertly using Google Maps to estimate the size of the barn and the lawn. And he was right on. He gave solid advice on the items we needed and the right number of each one. He also found ways to reduce our costs, which we appreciated. He has a well-stocked warehouse of rentals, supplying everything we wanted and needed for the weekend. He provided long, wooden tables for dinner, which, along with the mismatched vases/china and Chiavari chairs, created the perfect setting for our wedding reception. A romantic, I really wanted a chandelier in the barn, which he didn't have. Mathew went out and bought two beautiful chandeliers, which gave the perfect ambiance for our rustic chic barn dance. When it came to the weekend, Matthew arrived with a moving truck and a half and a handful of gentleman in tow. They set up a miniature village to support our weekend full of events, which took place at five different areas on the farm. Since we agreed on much of the set up in advance of the weekend, they required little direction. He tapped my now-husband and I sparingly for our feedback. As he realized there was an issue with our ceremony site, he gathered us and provided suggestions on a better angle - making us feel like we had come up with the decision ourselves. Just to make sure everything was perfect, he also came down to Oz Farm the day after setting up with a few items we hadn't realized that we needed. The farm setting was beyond gorgeous, but we wouldn't have been able to enjoy it without the valuable infrastructure provided by Mathew, including the lighting, generator and sound. Not only was the lighting helpful, it also looked lovely. Overall, Mathew was a pleasure to work with. He has a unique personality, strong point of view and artistic aesthetic - you have to like his style to have a successful event, and for us it is was a perfect fit. Wow, it's been a long time since I've been mistreated quite as badly as Matt treated us during our business with him. He's hung up on me twice now, and called me a dick. Not a good way to run a business. It all started when my (then) fiancé (now wife) and I started planning our wedding up in Mendocino. We kept hearing matt's name as the go to person for our tents, plates, silverware, etc needs. We called him and had a very nice meeting with him, in which he emphasized how he understands the nature of this business, and how plans change, etc. We left that meeting feeling great. Fast forward to 3 days before the wedding - I get a somewhat frantic call from him telling me that the placement we agreed on is now going to cost me an extra $600, because "he has to haul stuff down there". When I started asking him questions such as how many people he's got and why is it (any, really) more money, he blew up at me, told me to "fuck off", and hung up the phone in my face. Needless to say this isn't what I'm looking for right before the wedding - a very stressful time even without this guy pulling this kind of stunt. My fiancé called him and told him we'd pay. Two days later, we show up at the site, and the tent is set up SOMEWHERE DIFFERENT THAN WHAT WE AGREED ON, becuase he decided "it would look better there" (no joke!). Also, the tent has no walls. When we asked about the walls, we were told they were extra - which we of course paid for. At no point in our previous conversations about the tent were walls even mentioned - something i would have appreciated, since we all discussed the tent as protection against wind. Since this was a DIY wedding, he was only supposed to drop off stuff and we were setting it up. He DIDNT drop off the agreed wine flautes, the water pitchers we paid extra for, he was 25 chairs short, and he forgot several other items. We made do, of course, but all this didn't help. The next day, we were breaking everything down and the middle of it he wanted to sqaure everything off in terms of money. Completely exhausted, we told him we would like to get this done some other time in the future. He agreed. Well, the future came, I emailed him a list of things that were missing, and never heard back. I called him to confirm he got the email, and before I could say another word he told me he got it, and since my contract stipulates that we square off the money on *pickup day* - which we decided not to do - we're "shit out of luck". He told me I can "decide how i want to proceed" and THEN he then called me a dick, and HUNG UP THE PHONE IN MY FACE AGAIN. So, in the interest of saving your marriage from geting ruined by this person, I woul HIGHLY recommend NEVER working with Matt Rowland. read more

My husband and I were married a couple weeks back in Mendocino, and we used Matt Rowland Events for our rehearsal dinner rentals. One of the best things about this company is that the prices are incredibly reasonable for the rentals. He also has some very nice things-- in particular I love the farmhouse tables that Matt makes and rents as well. They are lovely and the rental price is very reasonable compared to what you would get for comparable tables elsewhere. However, I do think that it can be difficult to communicate well with Matt. He was always very nice and courteous to us, but I got the distinct feeling of disorganization. For example, we were set to arrive at our rental house where the rehearsal dinner was taking place on late Thursday night, and the rentals were scheduled to be delivered Friday morning. When we arrived, the rentals had already been delivered but were just left stacked outside getting wet in the misty air. Matt later explained that this was due to the availability of the truck on Friday-- however, it would be good to discuss this with your customers in advance instead of just doing it without letting us know. They did come later after we told them about the wetness issue to put a tarp on the rentals until they could be set up the next morning. Also, we asked Matt to come back to pick up the rentals on Saturday morning. He may have come at some point to pick some of the rentals up, but left most of them (including the large tables) until we asked him to come get them as we were checking out on Sunday. I'm not sure why he just didn't come get them as we had agreed, and the only reason this was really an issue was because we had people staying in the house who had to work around these large rentals all weekend. Again, not a large problem but definitely something that should be communicated to the customer if you are not going to be able to pick up the rentals when agreed. During our first meeting, my fiancé and I confronted Matt about a few of his questionable Yelp reviews, and because Matt was not aware of the reviews, it didn't go over well. We walked away. Fast forward a few weeks and we decided to give Matt a second chance. His prices were remarkably better than any other company on the coast (think 50% less) and we appreciated an email he had sent us in response to our first encounter. Reengaging with Matt was the best decision we could have made. A few things you need to understand when working with Matt: 1. He may not always respond immediately to emails and/or remember everything you talked about. That's ok. Take notes. Believe in him and trust that he will pull through. 2. You will learn more about event design than you ever imagined possible. My fiancé and I were on the phone with Matt for hours at a time on a few Sunday nights - for no extra charge. He would talk through his vision for the event in detail and would send us photos on the spot. The man LOVES what he does. 3. He may lose his temper (he never did with us after the first meeting) but he is an artist, not a businessman. You are hiring him to set up a beautiful event. You are not hiring him to smooth talk you. He'll tell you like it is, and we appreciated his candor. 4. He has some mad skillz when it comes to lighting design, tent design, general event layout, etc. He set up a photo booth for us the night before our wedding that BLEW US AWAY. It was awesome (I added a photo of it). We didn't know if it would happen (we had to remind him a couple times), but it did and we were super impressed. 5. Speaking of reminding him, be sure to write things down and take notes of what you discussed just to be sure you capture everything for the event. Run through the list with him and double check that he's on the same page. He will do it but he gets busy, and you being organized will go a long way. In the end, Matt's product is second to none, and his prices cannot be beat. We would hire him again in a heartbeat. I actually never read reviews on Matt until just now (due to the high recommendation I received). I'm quite shocked at what bad experiences people encountered with him. First off, Prasada (Matt's secretary) was absolutely OUTSTANDING. She was my first impression of Matt Rowland Events and it was nothing shy of wonderful. Without her, I'm not sure Matt would be nearly as organized as he did miss a few appoints and seemed a little scatter brained with each phone call. That being said, if you've ever met a true artist, that is just how they are. They know what they're doing and just don't think in steps like some people do, and surely do not need people to tell him how to do his job. Matt was incredible, his vision ended up even better than what I had imagined! I can't even count the number of things he did that ended up being more money with no charge for us. He brought in a new tent (more expensive) with no extra charge, better chairs etc. He even took off a HUGE chunk of the labor cost because I had some family members willing to help set the tent up. He knew exactly what he was doing and giving him the power and freedom to run with my ideas was the most relieving feeling. It was so convenient to be able to work with one person for a variety of needs (furniture, dinnerware, decor, lighting, drapes, audio needs, kitchen equipment and supplies...), and we're so happy with how everything turned out. I LOVE MATT! Ok, now that I have gotten that out of the way, I can tell you all the reasons why I love Matt. First of all, his selection and collection of rentable items is unbelievable. As a lover of all things vintage, he had so many options and made the "look" of my ceremony and reception complete unique. (Don't worry, he has modern/fancy things too!) Second, his prices are totally reasonable. He offers discounts if you pay up front, and is totally flexible if you need to make any changes. For example, the day before my wedding the caterer said that my 48" round tables were going to be too small for my family style dinner. Matt and his crew brought both the 48" tables, as well as 60" tables, set them up and let me decide what I wanted to do. He replaced my table linens in a jiffy and had what seemed like a huge problem solved in about an hour. Awesome! Last, his crew had my venue cleaned by the time I arrived the morning following my wedding (about 11am). You couldn't even tell we had been there (which is a good thing). So, don't believe what some of these b-holes say about Matt on yelp. He is super friendly, cracks jokes all the time and is super flexible. Matt provided me with ALL my rustic farmhouse wedding props, and all for a very reasonable price. We had our wedding at Spring Ranch in Mendocino and he was very patient with me (I was super stressed out with all the planning) and really made the venue look just the way we were hoping. I have never been moved to write a Yelp review before, but after Matt and his team's extraordinary work on our wedding, I knew I had to share my experience. My (now) wife and I started planning our wedding up in beautiful Mendocino a little later then some others might -- we were immensely fortunate to meet Matt a few months before our date. Immediately, it was clear that our sensibilities were a perfect match. Matt is an artist. My wife and I are also artists and had always dreamed of a wedding that matched our aesthetic principles -- less traditional and full of surprises and spirit. Matt is an avid antique collector, and his set of vintage chairs were perfect for setting the tone at Spring Ranch. They are an amazing complement to his beautiful hand-built farm tables. My wife's father is a woodworker himself, so having this homemade touch was just amazing. Also, the day of the wedding was kind of chilly. The evening before, we called Matt and he offered to leave baskets of beautiful blankets at the ceremony site. Everyone loved this touch and wore the shawls from afternoon late into the foggy night. With Matt, we knew that we didn't actually have to obsess ourselves over every single detail because his taste is so good and so similar to our own. We hadn't even fully planned the seating for our ceremony, knowing that Matt would create a magical design. And indeed, he aligned the chairs in a beautiful arc with a diagonal aisle -- something so striking and unusual that our guests kept talking about it. My wife and I are the kind of people that deeply care about how things look and feel, but are also not obsessive and enjoy being surprised by the creativity of others. Being able to have this type of relationship --this deep trust -- with Matt was beyond anything we could have imagined in working with someone on our wedding. I cannot emphasize enough how wonderful it was to work with Matt. If you are someone who thinks of events as artistic experiences -- you and Matt will completely see eye to eye. He loves creating beautiful, striking moments that are truly special. And Matt is surrounded by exceptional people. In particular, Prasada, who he works with, was also our day-of-coordinator -- she is the most wonderful person to create such a day with. So this review is solidly from an outside view since I chose not to deal with a wedding planner. I called Matts company when I set up plans for my wedding next year in Mendocino. The woman that answered was so rude, she told me he was to busy of a man to speak to and that I would need to set up an apt. When I informed her I don't live locally she sighed loudly and said ok well we can do a phone conference. I agreed and politely ended the conversation. She told me I would receive a call on July 10, I still to this day never received a call a month later. Very disrespectful since all I wanted to know was price ranges. Nothing against Matt as I have never spoke to him but his secretary is terribly rude and unprofessional. read more

We got married in Mendocino on 9/14/13 and Matt decorated our ceremony location and reception. We got married on a bluff, the Ford House lawn and in September the grass is no longer green and the ground is a bit un-even. Matt and his team transformed the area into a beautiful ceremony. He has so many fun options and creative ideas, it was easy for me to have an idea of what I wanted and then let him run with it. It was beautiful and everything I could have hoped for. Same goes for the reception, we had our reception at Crown Hall and in looking at the hall without decoration it was hard to visualize but Matt and his team TRANSFORMED the hall into the most beautiful reception! Our guests were floored when they walked in and multiple mentioned to us how amazing they thought it looked. Matt worked wonderfully with the caterer and florist who he had worked with in the past. He also put any concerns I had to rest by proactively working with the DJ and photographers to familiarize them with the ceremony and reception location. We lived 4 hours away from Mendocino and had to do most of the planning over the phone, Matt was easy to get a hold of, work with, and very fair priced. I could not have been happier with the way our wedding turned out and loved working with Matt. If getting married in the Mendocino area Matt Rowland Events is a must use for all of your decorating needs. read more
