Matt had countertops installed for me. While the work was first-rate, the experience left me sour. After completion, we wanted to get the scrap back stone (about 40% of what we purchased) for other projects. We had to keep going back to Matt and not getting an answer. After a month, it was finally delivered with a $250 service charge! Very poor communications and poor customer service! read more

The positives about this biz are- Anna was wonderful! Very helpful and friendly. We loved working with her. And the selection was amazing. Price point was decent for a custom tile store. Anna was able to get my tile in very quickly. The huge negative was the owner Matt. He treated me like a 12 year old. He was so arrogant and condescending I was blown away that I was experiencing his behavior. He basically told me I didn't need to take more than one sample home "because when you take more than that, you will just get confused and then go to Home Depot instead." He also told me how expensive the one sample board he allowed me to take home was, and to be very very careful with it. If I broke it, I'd have to pay, blah blah blah..on and on. Again I felt like I was 12. He also told me to "not take the sample into another store, give it to my contractor or take it to Home Depot." He was beyond bad at making a customer feel appreciated and welcome. I wanted out of there instantly. Then when I got an email from them after the transaction, I was honest about my experience. I returned a few weeks later to return my sample and Matt came out of the back of the store. He said "oh I read your review, I'm sorry I caught you on a bad day." Ummmm, not my bad day, YOUR bad day. So again his ego got the best of him and he blamed the entire bad experience on ME. Such an unfortunate few interactions with the owner. I cannot recommend this business. read more

Our house was built in 1953 and the bathrooms needed an upgrade especially the one with the salmon tile that was cracking. Matt, a great designer, helped me choose tiles that gave us a fresh look in keeping with the foot print of our home that combines the traditional with the modern. We chose Spanish made blue polished ceramic tiles that gave the bathroom an authentic handmade look. The installation process was a pleasure as Manny worked quietly and paid attention to every detail. The bathroom turned out gorgeous with just the contemporary fanciful feel I wanted. A great place to buy tile- very nice showroom and experienced staff.

I needed tile to remodel our our fireplace surround and floor. Matt's store is like 1/4 mile from my house so was the first on my hunt - wanting to support small local businesses. The reception was shocking. For starters, I hadn't made an appointment. I could see people in the show room, the door was locked and it took a phone call to have someone come out. I got 'the INTERVIEW" - like who was I, had I shopped there before, and why didn't I call - "we are on appointment only". The 'interview' consisted of asking me everything except my mother's maiden name. I was shocked, and told the gal, you have a showroom full, and I am a customer, you have a lot of tile, but based on this "interview" I will never come back". Yes, I had been a previous customer - another very disgruntling experience of picking out the ceramic tile for the kitchen floor, and was told it would be 3-4 days before arriving. The tile arrived 3 weeks later, and our contractor had to make other job arrangements. When our project was completed, we had two full boxes of tile that we didn't need - only to find out that Matt's people calculated extra, which is what my contractor had already fixed into our order. They of course, refused to accept any returns. I will never return to Matt's business. read more

He has a very clear eye for design and when he came out to our house, he noticed the family room fireplace adjacent to the kitchen. He suggested we pull the tile into that room as well. We could not be happier with our selections, quality, design and installation. His installation crew is thorough, clean, and professional. Manny has a great talent. This was not an easy job as there were many cuts and many different styles and types of tile included. We could not be more pleased with the end result and would not hesitate to use Matt Clark tile again in the future. Bad Customer Experience - Poor Service, Lacks Knowledge My husband and I purchased tile from them 5 years ago when we remodeled our kitchen so when we went back to purchase more, the service this time was very poor and their staff was unresponsive to our needs. The tile I wanted to reorder was discontinued so I was hoping they could help me find new tiles that matched but they were not helpful nor informed of alternative options. They also forgot about an appointment that we set up in advance so I wasted a trip across town during my lunch break to view options. This was very disappointing. I ended up going to Tile Co on Broad St. and they were incredibly knowledgeable, had a ton of options/ideas, and quick to get me samples. I recommend checking them out first. read more

He promptly returns calls and is eager to share his years of knowledge. The Schluter-Kerdi materials have been a huge labor saver. These people saved us from another delay on our pool construction. We'd already tried to order tile 4 times, with other vendors, but The selected tile was always either unavailable in quantity, unavailable in trim pieces, available but unexpected 10 week delay at Cetera at Cetera. I don't know why tile show rooms show you tile that is effectively unavailable but they do. I found this place online, and even though it's an hour from us, I called and the person who helped us was obviously a cut above your average tile sales person. I explained what we were looking for, we made an appointment for a couple of days hence, when we arrived she had all of the tile assembled in appropriate samples and had already made sure that it was available and had pricing information readily available. They ordered us some larger samples which came in one day. We made a choice and placed an order, the tile was here less than a week. It was also slightly less expensive than we had anticipated so everyone is happy. People it does not get better than this. Their show room is deluxe, BTW, it was an educational experience, made me want to build something else. read more

Be warned - I purchased tile from this store a few years ago for an outdoor shower and was very pleased with the service and the selection and was very happy. Recently I returned to place another order. My husband and I were treated so poorly I don't understand how this place stays in business. We have lived here and done business here our entire lives. We prefer to keep our business local but will not be shopping here again. The owner is rude and dismissive. We were sent the wrong product even after we were assured it was in stock and paid an expedited shipping charge. The owner and the sales people changed their story of why it happened so many times it became comical. They essentially blamed us for not knowing what it was we ordered and told us we didn't know what we were doing. When we showed them that the tile was different than on the sample board, we were told that the tile we wanted was out of stock so they ordered something else and they were sure they told us that. No. We are planning to donate the wrong tile that was sent to us and shop somewhere else. I recommend that you do too. read more

Excellent! We decided to remodel our master bathroom and selected beautiful tile from Matt Clark and had him install it. Our contractor told us that he could do the rough plumbing and install the fixtures. Obviously not because it failed spectacularly. The water followed the pipes down to the kitchen ruining the ceiling, the kitchen and family room floors. However, when our claims adjusted used his water meter on the master bathroom floors, he found them dry. Matt had installed a water barrier called schluter which also inhibits mold growth. The claims adjuster told us this schluter barrier saved our new master bathroom floor. This is the third time we have worked with Matt and highly recommend him. Very professional and the highest quality of material. Excellent! read more

If I could rate zero stars I would. We are about to remodel both of our bathrooms and stopped in to get some ideas. The girl who greeted us was nice at first - until she asked for our name & email address. When we explained that we were just starting to get ideas for our project she told us that we would need to open an account before we could take any pictures (huh? I wasn't planning to) or check out any samples. Fine. So we are looking around and find some cement tile that we had seen on a design show. I picked up the brochure that was there that showed all of the design styles and Matt comes over and informs me that the brochure belongs to them and that I wasn't allowed to take it (did I say I was going to? Did I ask if I could have it? No.). A few minutes later he approaches us again and says "let me explain how this works. We provide concierge service - we don't "just do orders" we provide full service. This isn't "Tile 1.0, it's Tile 3.0". He proceeds to say you can look around if you want, but I wanted you to understand..." At which point I tuned him out. We left immediately after he stopped talking. We get it - you DON'T want us in your "showroom" to look at the tile I assume you sell. Trust and believe - I would not use your tile or services if you were the ONLY tile source in town. So we went literally around the corner to C.W. Quinn and not only did he not mind us looking around, he answered all of our questions, introduced us to a sales rep of one of the tile lines he carries, and was super friendly. We will buy our tile from him. read more

Before going to Matt Clark Tile, I almost gave up on finding a backsplash tile for my new kitchen counters and appliances. I had spent time at another tile store in SLO, but was discouraged and disappointed. I almost hired an expensive designer which wasn't in the budget. It was a joy working with Anna. We found the perfect tile and tile pattern for my kitchen backsplash. My months of stress were over and I was able to start my kitchen remodel without any doubts about choices. I went into the store for the first time on May 15th. I had a very simple request for plain matte white tile. I waited approximately 5 minutes for this guy to "help" me. When I told him what I was looking for he informed me that I would need to book an appointment and futher told me that I was "at this point, just a consumer looking around". My husband and I first started looking for our bathroom tile at Home Depot, but we felt our choices were limited due to a lack of color and texture choices. We went over to Matt Clark's Tile & Stone store and were duly impressed at the selection, knowledge, and experience of Matt Clark . Matt spent time explaining the Schluter-Kerdi system that he uses in remolding bathrooms.We were convinced that this product was the best solution for our bathroom. Eva, a designer in the store, helped us choose a rock/stone medley for the shower floor. The rounded stones massage one's feet as one enjoys the natural feel. Matt also suggested that we trim the tile with a brush nickel metal strip and again it modernized the bathroom design. My husband and I visited this show room on MLK day 2017. We were so delighted to be able to shop for tile together. We are updating our 3100 square foot ranch including a complete remodel of our kitchen and 3 bathrooms, new finishes in our laundry room and linen area, and new tile for our 4 fireplaces. We had been to several other tile shops along the coast, and was delighted to find this shop had tile brands I had not yet heard of, as we are looking for something new and different. Initially, the owner of the store (I only know this because his photo is on the Yelp account), was busy working with another group of people. We walked through the store discussing new tile ideas. The discussion between Matt and the other 3 people started getting heated. I'm not sure what the problem was, but Matt seemed to be raising his voice at these people. I started feeling uncomfortable, so I decided to finish looking at one particular display that I was really interested in, and then leave as soon as I was done. After the other people left, Matt asked us if we had looked at his online website. I said, no, and was just grateful his store was open on the holiday. (We had come on a Saturday during 2016, waited around 35 minutes after the store was to open, but finally left because the store never did open while we waited.) I would much rather shop for tile in person and order tile from a reputable local dealer rather than pay shipping, and potentially deal with broken tile situations with an online vendor. My husband and I thought it a little strange he did not try to engage us, try to assist us in making selections. After a short while, Matt suddenly asked us, "Will you need to be taking any photos today?" I was taken off guard, as I had already taken about 6 photos, and I hadn't been secretive about it. I generally take photos so that I can search HOUZZ for photos of projects using the same tile. Anyway, I wasn't sure what kind of answer Matt wanted. So, I said yes, that I had already taken a few photos. He then explained that "they tell us we need to ask this question." (I wasn't sure who "they" was, but I presumed he meant the shop owner.) He then went on to talk about Barnes & Noble, how they went out of business due to Amazon. He also accused us of taking the photos for purposes of ordering tile from online tile venues. I explained that that was not our intention, and, that I knew for certain that the particular tile I was looking at was only available through a limited number of dealers. He then said, "Oh, because you already tried to buy it online." I couldn't believe this guy! I have taken photos at just about every tile shop I have gone into, and have never had a problem. In fact, the previous tile shop/Slab shop I visited, actually reminded my to take a photo of the stacked stone I was considering for two of our fireplaces. We replaced the samples we were looking at and left. We couldn't stop talking about how bad this experience was! First the guy strongly suggests we should stop looking at this shop and go look at his online website. Then he does a complete turn and accuses us of shopping online! We couldn't believe this guy could stay in business! After we got home, we looked at his YELP ratings and in reading the other poor reviews felt a kinship to this man's terrible way of treating customers. If you do choose to go in and take a look at his tile selection, I suggest you wear armor and be prepared to be beaten up a bit. Definitely not a friendly atmosphere. We will not return. read more

This shop has great tile, but is not professionally run. Horrible customer service in the store and dont expect to get your tile on time. Several times going into shop the person at the front desk could not help with any tile questions and told us to come back. Not a great way to run a tile shop. Once placed small order unknown fees were added and then had trouble getting tile on time with no update calls. read more

I went in on a reconnaissance mission as I am beginning a project and wanted ideas. I was abruptly dismissed by Matt ( I think I have the name correct because the office assistant called him by name while I was there). He first asked if I was a customer but then proceeded to be rather short with me when he realized I wasn't a big spending customer (yet) without even finding out what I wanted he asked if I was prepared to place an order today. I was dumbfounded by his arrogance, lack of respect, and uncaring attitude. I was prepared to place a small order, as it happens, however, not only will I not buy from this company but I will not go there again nor would I suggest to any of my friends or acquaintenances that they shop there. The horrible in-store experience was not appreciated. Btw, I had been in before and had met with a woman who was pleasant and friendly but this experience today turned me off the Matt Clark Tile and Stone experience for life.
