My daughter began attending Mathansium in Mill Valley in mid-February 2015. I found their center via a Google search of tutoring centers specializing in mathematics in southern Marin County. After some extensive due diligence, I decided to give the Mathnasium "trial day" a try. The moment we walked in, my daughter was hooked. While my daughter understood addition quite well and could do most standard addition problems in her head, she did not understand the inverse of subtraction. Patterns eluded her and fractions were a foreign concept. My daughter, while half-way through second grade, took the first grade assessment test and scored in the low 70's. While I spoke with the staff about the outcome of her assessment, my daughter started chatting with the tutors about the "store items" she saw in the studio. She quizzed them endlessly on the punchcard concept and drilled them on the how the children in the pictures holding a $100 bill acquired them. When she learned that through a little hardwork, focus, and commitment she could be one of those kids on the wall and could "shop" in the "store" with her punchcards, she insisted she come back and promised me she would do her very best. By mid-March (only 4 weeks later), my daughter took the first grade assessment and scored a 98%. She managed to win the $100 prize and had acquired so many punchcards she was able to "buy" several items of her choice. She was STOKED. The reward system is amazing and keeps her energized and motivated to do more, to do better, and to outperform. From mid-February to today (July), my daughter has rapidly excelled from essentially "hating" math to telling all her friends and family that math is her favorite subject in school and that she wishes she could do math all day long. She is now mid-way through completing their third grade level course and so enthusiastic to start 3rd grade in August and share with her teachers and fellow students all that she has learned. (She has even said to me, "do you think I will be the smartest in math in my class??") In 3rd grade she is allowed to be a tutor to kindergarteners, and she is bubbling with pride that she will be able to share with them all her "tricks" and "best practices" to understanding and loving math. Everyday she asks, "is today a Mathnasium day? Can we go please?" Scott is so easy to work with and unbelievably and generous and understanding with both the parents and students. Our son started attending mathnasium in Dec 2014 after we received his first report card and saw that he was significantly behind in math. We looked into several tutoring facilities and decided to take advantage of the 2 day trial mathnasium was offering. Our biggest concern was that we were going to make this commitment financially and 2 months down the road be in a situation where we were fighting with our son to go each week. After the trail sessions we saw that our son was excited about going to mathnasium and didn't think of it as a chore, rather a fun activity. We decided to bite the bullet and sign him up and couldn't be more happy with his excitement and improvement in math. Six months later our son still thinks that going to mathnasium is a fun after school activity. On most days it's the first thing he asks when we pick him up from school, "can I go to mathnasium". He's asked on several occasions if he can stay longer than the hour session. The reward system they have in place shows children that there are rewards for their hard work and success. It has shown our son the difference between working hard for something versus being given something, which is beyond what we expected from mathnasium. And best of all, when we received his year-end report card we saw that he is now at and in places above his grade level. Our daughter is starting kindergarten next year and already asking when she can start going to mathnasium. Scott, the owner has built up a great program and community within Mathnasium. I purchased a month at Mathnasium at our children's school auction for one of my twins who was struggling with Math. I am so glad I did. Her confidence was suffering in the math realm and had been since 1st grade. In 3rd grade we realized we had to do more. As many may know, parents trying to help their children understand a math concept is most times futile and usually a very frustrating event for all parties involved. Having a twin sister who has no issues with math concepts has not helped the confidence factor either. My daughter is now enrolled for the 6 month program with unlimited hours. Her first month was amazing. Actually her first day. I was beyond delighted that she took to the group environment though she still gets very individual attention. She loves going to Mathnasium and now when she goes she wants to stay for hours on end so she can achieve another level. She gleams with pride . Talks about how proud she is of herself and she knows her instructors are excited for her achievements as well. The confidence boost Mathnasium has provided has of course trickled over and intersected with so many other areas of her life in such a positive way. Scott has very competent, friendly , caring instructors there that provide very positive energy for the kids. Working toward prizes doesn't hurt the die hard mathnasium momentum my daughter has going either . I've tried expensive math tutors for my kids believing that 1:1 teaching must be the best way. It depends on who you get, of course, but I've been disappointed so far with their lack of dedication and poor results. I came to Mathnasium with some skepticism since it's a group approach. But in the case of my kids, who are reasonably good at math, turns out that Mathnasium really helps them not only advance but cultivate their true interest in math. What I like about Mathnasium is that it's a well-thought-out system which offers a prepared response for each child's evolving math characteristics. Even better, the kids seem to really love going. Scott, the owner and director, provides snacks and various rewards as incentives - the reward system turns learning math into a game, which clearly appeals to this generation. The classroom format and ambiance are also pleasant; we've been coming at various times on different days and never found it crowded. Scott faithfully tracks attendance and deploys the proper number of teachers so that students always get ample 1:1 attention. My kids sometimes get help on their school homework as well. My (now) 4th grade son and (now) kindergarten daughter were tutored here for just under two years. I want to thank Trevor, Jeremy, and Scott, for working with my kids. My son, who transitioned from public to private school this year, is understanding ALL the math concepts this year. He went from below grade level several years ago, to top of his class in an academically challenging private school. Most importantly, he looks forward to learning math and has risen to the occasion each time he is challenged with new work. My daughter is also doing extraordinarily well, and we are grateful to Jeremy for working with her and providing her with developmentally appropriate work. She is so confident in math! I appreciate so much how this team of people prepared both of my children with a strong math foundation to build from and the confidence to meet their challenging math curriculum this year with success! My daughter is in 2nd grade at a public elementary school in Mill Valley and has been doing Mathnasium for about 4 -5 months. I have been really impressed with the attention they provide, their ability to make math fun, and the problem solving skills approach that they are teaching her as to how to best approach a math program. I specifically went with Mathnasium over a program like Kumon, with which I'm familiar, as I felt that Kumon is very much worksheet driven and much about rote memory. Mathnasium really breaks down how best to tackle a specific math problem by teaching some core math fundamental and distilling what's being asked in the math problem. My daughter looks forward to going to Mathnasium which I love and I feel that she is getting a lot of personalized attention that is serving her well. The owner seems very dedicated and is looking to grow his program and I think it's a great additional math program to supplement what is being taught in school. I also think it's a great program for making kids math skills very solid for future more complex math and or for children who are looking to get ahead in math. read more

Not a big yelp reviewer but mathnasium of mill valley deserves one...here's why...my daughter who is currently in 3rd grade has struggled with math concepts since kindergarten...even with a finance degree, I clearly am not a teacher!!! my daughter easily caught on to my frustration level when I "helped" her and this only made things worse. Her confidence was hurt and her degree of intimidation by math grew rapidly. Her initial assessment showed her to be nearly 2 grades behind. After 5 months her level of improvement has been tremendous. Mathnasium teaches in a way that makes math fun and approachable. You can tell how successful their methods are by the number of students I see every time I drop my daughter off. My daughter has NOT complained ONCE about going to Mathnasium and I take her right after school. She also likes the fact that she is learning things at Mathnasium that her school has not even started to cover. Bottom line - it's clear that Scott and his tutoring staff (Kevin, Treavor, etc...) do a great job with students having trouble with math. This parent is impressed and grateful!!!!! read more

Mathnasium has been a fantastic experience for my first-grade son and has by far exceeded all expectations. Over the summer, my son went from somewhat lackluster and unenthused, to very confident and passionate about math. Scott and the math tutor team are extremely effective in demystifying and making math fun for kids. Our son loves Mathnasium and asks to go frequently. I love the way students receive almost one-on-one attention every time, and aren't allowed to get frustrated and give up since there is always a tutor right there to help when needed. I was initially concerned that my two younger daughters would get bored while waiting for my son at Mathnasium, but Scott has a table of "thinking" toys and games at the front of the center which my daughters just love. They actually ask to go to Mathnasium as well! It's been a great experience for the entire family. I can't recommend Mathnasium highly enough. Our son LOVES Mathnasium. We happened upon it by chance when we were visiting the Starbucks next door. Our son is only 5 and LOVES anything to do with numbers. We didn't really know what we should be doing with him to encourage his interest in math or what kids this age should be learning. We were curious about Mathnasium and what they did so talked with the owner, Scott, about what our son could do at Mathnasium. We weren't looking for a tutor, but rather just a place where our son could engage his interest in math. Our son started with very basic counting and has advanced into double digit addition, fractions, telling time, counting money, etc. He absolutely loves going to Mathnasium. The tutors are all very professional and make learning fun. As soon as we leave our son asks when he can go back again. I have also noticed a big increase in our son's self confidence since he started going to Mathnasium, and his curiosity about mathmatical concepts in the world around him has just skyrocketed. read more

I cannot say enough great things about Scott, his staff & Mathnasium! Our son & daughter absolutely LOVE going to Mathnasium. Scott & his team really make math fun, keep the kids interested & make the entire experience a positive one. The kids learn math, have constant goals, they gain confidence by improving their math skills, they have fun b/c they are regularly earning prizes & learning. Our children our not only thriving in math, but it is their favorite subject. It is a great place if your child is falling behind in math OR on the opposite end of the spectrum - they need to be challenged b/c they are more advanced than their peers. I'm so happy I discovered Mathnasium when searching for a math tutor at the beginning of the summer. My 10 year-old son really struggled with math in 4th grade. He was diagnosed as having ADD in 3rd grade, and despite ADD medication, extra help from specialists at school, and a private tutor at $50/hr twice a week, he still had a difficult time and ended 4th grade with a C- in math. He has been attending Mathnasium 2-3x/week since the beginning of the summer. He really likes Scott and all the Mathnasium tutors. I was a bit concerned at first that he would be too distracted working side-by-side with other children, but the tutors were able to keep his interest and attention, and he didn't need his ADD medication over the summer. So in addition to getting a good foundation in math, I feel like Mathnasium is helping my son to become better focused in a learning environment, and that he will have more success in 5th grade. I couldn't be happier with the way Scott runs this place; and the way all the tutors interact with the kids. They've made this place so comfortable for kids to come to. Not to mention, it's made my job at home SO much easier.(I hated being the tutor during homework time, as it would always end in tears...both his and mine :) ) My son has been going to Mathnasium for almost 3 years, and because of Mathnasium, math has become a relatively easy subject for him. The curriculum is always a little ahead of what he's doing in the classroom, so whatever my son is doing in class, is always more of a review, rather than it being a brand new exercise. And, when homework time does comes around, he's always a little ahead of the curve. It's important to note that kids generally need to show up AT LEAST twice a week, otherwise the return on your investment may be a bit muted. We were referred to Mathnasium by a friend after our daughter (age 8) began struggling with math at school. At the time, our daughter was seeing a private tutor once a week in addition to getting extra help at school. Nothing was working. She was near the bottom of her class and becoming extremely anxious anytime math was even discussed. Fast forward 4 months and our daughter works on math during her free time and would visit Mathasium every day if we let her. I cant say enough great things about this place. It is so exciting to see her comfortable with numbers and have solid strategies to solving math problems. The center provides a very comfortable environment with a stable group of tutors in addition to the owner (Scott) engaged every step of the way. Mathnasium has been great helping to keep my son engaged in math. Even though my son was only in Kindergarten when we first started, I asked Scott to work with him and after just a few weeks I could see the improvement in his understanding of math and his recognition of its importance to his life. To this day (think we have been members since Sept 12 or so) my son loves to attending Mathnasium, so much so that he looks forward to his "summer camp" at Mathnasium. Scott (the owner) is incredibly engaged in the community and gives back $$ and time in local events and etc - this is the kind of business (and business owner) that communities are lucky to have. We love Mathnasium Mill Valley! My son loves to go and asks me to go several times per week. There are times he asks to miss soccer or swimming to go to Mathnasium. I am so impressed with Scott and his staff. They all really care about the kids. Scott is a great mentor for my son because my son really loves Math in the way Scott does. My son is there because he doesn't get enough Math at school and enjoys doing Math at Mathnasium where there are fun contests and a lot of motivating factors that keep kids really excited about Math. My son is in his first year of high school but has been struggling with math since elementary. I have tried to teach him on my own, but it always turn out to be a disaster. I often encourage him to get help from his teachers, suggest to get a math tutor or watch online tutorials, he never agrees to any of my suggestions. Therefore, he continues to struggle throughout. At the beginning of this summer, my son decided to join Mathnasium in Mill Valley to get help and improve his math. Since then, I am very surprised and happy to see that now he is very self-motivated and enjoys going to Mathnasium every Monday to Friday, and practice math with them for about 2 hours each day. Cannot say enough good things about Mathnasium and Scott. He is tireless and dedicated to teaching math to kids of all ages and levels. Our middle child was really struggling with math concepts and he has especially progressed from being far behind in math to Student of the Month in November. Although he has now caught up to being at or beyond grade level, he has asked to continue to go to Mathnasium because he enjoys doing math. Scott really believes in the kids, and they can feel it. He has a game night, raffles, and tons of things that the kids can purchase with their punchcards. We are so grateful to him. Mathnasium is fantastic. My daughter was struggling with Math and began to hate it. We were recommended to go by a friend and she said that Mathnasium would make a difference. My daughter absolutely loves it and begs to go there after school and on weekends. Scott does an amazing job in getting to know each and every child and makes it so much fun that the kids are completely engaged. They learn so much and their confidence is lifted so high. They can earn prizes and awards and all they have to do is keep doing math. The instructors are super and very patient. I can't say enough great things about Mathnasium! My daughter is in third grade and was behind in math. In less than a year she caught up almost two grade levels! She went from dreading math to loving it. One of the cool parts of Mathnasium is the sub-culture there. There is structure and order but lots of fun while learning. There are rewards and confidence-boosting side activities that you just don't get tutoring at home or one-on-one. And the cost and flexible drop-in times fit our budget and busy schedules. And the tutors....wow! They are the backbone supporting the kid's success. Scott, the director, is personable and so dedicated and it shows in the vibe as soon as you walk in the door.
